General discussion / Things to do on holiday
July 23, 2014, 08:55:32 AM
(Clean) things to do on holiday to keep it interesting

1) when staying in a hotel, keep going to reception and ask if there are any messages. Phone the hotel and leave yourself a message in a foreign accent such as "the package is in the open - abort abort"

Can anyone recommend a Luggage Courier Service operating out of the North for sending luggage to England?

Ahem... anyone else watch it? Saw some unionist politicians and they were drooling at the pomp and ceremony. Though I have to say that the queen's headgear was a little OTT

General discussion / USA Car Wash
April 29, 2014, 10:55:36 PM
Last Saturday the USA Car Wash on the Shore Road in Belfast tried a little bit of marketing. They had two young very fit girls wearing skin tight black leotards and nothing else.

My car was very dirty so I had my car washed 8 times.

The Gun Lobby in USA don't want anyway getting in their way of their right to kill people.

GAA Discussion / County Players and Twitter

Are county players that frequently use foul language on Twitter a good example to the younger generation?

Or am I just old and out of touch?

General discussion / DoE Road Safety Television Adverts
February 10, 2014, 09:29:57 PM
The DoE Road Safety Television Adverts really hit home the effects of driving too fast, or driving under the influence of alcohol, or driving and texting etc.

The latest one is a mother and father talking about their daughter who they assume was texting while she was driving. The pain the parents suffer looks unbearable, but I applaud their bravery in making the advert.

General discussion / The Haas Talks
September 20, 2013, 11:41:37 AM
This probaby deserves its own thread. Here is my view of the background to the Haas talks:

1) The DUP were pissed aff at Alliance getting the East Belfast seat, so they tricked the Ulster Unionists into a partnership and concocted a story about flags on the City Hall to scare the low-brow knuckle draggers. Their leaflet drop had the desired effect as it blamed Alliance for making belfast city hall less british/english. Unfortunately after that, things got out of hand, the mob took over with riots, protests etc. It was also a disaster for the business community. [The guy who came up with the leaflet idea said "ooops" but then realised he could blame the economic disaster on Nama. What a star he is!].

2) Unionists hate being told what to do, or what not to do. Especially by those pesky fenians. They want to march where they like, they want to celebrate past battles, but dont want fenians doing the same (Long Kesh and Beleek)

3) Unionists/Orange Order are not getting their way, so they thought let's try another angle - bring in the yanks.

In these talks, the nationalists have nothing to loose (hence our williningness to participate) and unionists have everything to loose (but they are so stupid they dont realise it yet). It will all end in tears.

General discussion / Historical Enquiries Team

QuoteThe body set up to probe deaths during the Troubles in Northern Ireland investigated cases where the state was involved with "less rigour" than others, a police watchdog has found.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-23161353

This holds very true for me. I have a close friend whose father, a Catholic, owned a pub on the Shore Road in Belfast and was shot dead as he closed his pub. The pub was next door to a police station. The incident occured in the 1970's.

At the time, the police just treated it as a robbery gone wrong, saying that it was not sectarian even though the killers shouted sectarian abuse. The family were never happy with the RUC story and the HET chose to ignore it as well.

The family are ordinary decent people, never involved in politics but very much at the bottom of the victim's hierarchy.

I'll remove the thread if anyone advises that it is inappropriate.

Armagh / Armagh v Dublin 1977
July 04, 2013, 09:08:51 PM
Did anyone see the re-run on TG4 last night? I was in the Canal End to witness the 12 point defeat 5-12 to 3-06. If...

- Jimmy Smyth had worn studs
- Larry Kearns could jump and catch a ball
- Tom McCreesh could man mark
- Big Joe didnt collapse after running 50 yards
- Noel Marley had sat nav
- Dublin didnt have Kevin Moran

then we could have won!

GAA Discussion / County Player Twins
May 10, 2013, 09:53:05 PM
We all remember the McEntee twins. But are there many county players past or present that were twins?

For example, Brian Canavan who played for Armagh and now commentates has a twin brother.

Tomorrow is the first of March. I was always told to say "Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits" as soon as I wake up on March 1st.

This will obviously be the secret to Armagh's success this year.
