January 10, 2014, 12:37:29 PM
Liverpool Wolfe Tones is a club based in the North-West county of Lancashire in England. It is an unqiue club in Britain as it caters for Men and Ladies football and hurling. It will be entering their fourth year in existence and is going from strength to strength. If you want to join up or even train with the club in any of the above disciplines, feel free to PM me for more details.

GAA Discussion / Armagh TV
December 07, 2013, 06:31:19 PM
I got a phone call from first trust regarding £1 being taken from my account. What is funny I have not used that account in over two years so they were wondering why this strange activity was happening. It took place around September.

I paid to watch a Cross game however with my Santander bank card. So I got billed £1 twice.

So I dont know how they managed to do this. I have not paid for a match via Armagh tv with my first trust account ever.

For me it is the so-called Commonwealth games.

Countries who still are within the British empire and those wishing to hang onto the status playing sports to prove they are the best in such a grotesque empire really annoys me. These games came about to prove to the world that those within the British empire are somewhat superior to the rest of the world. It was a 'celebration' of sporting colonialism and imperialism.

On the fact has any athlete withdrawn from these games because of the above reason?

Niall Donoghue (22) who played for Kilbeacanty died suddenly this evening at around 7pm.

The young hurler had been an integral part of the Galway hurling team and played in the All-Ireland final last year. He had also helped the county secure glory in the 2011 Under 21's All-Ireland.

Pat Kearney, Galway Hurling Board Secretary said the entire community was devastated by the tragic death.

Mr Kearney, who was a fellow clubman of the late Niall Donoghue at Kilbeacanty, said the thoughts and prayers of the entire board and club went out to Niall's family and community.

"He was a very talented hurler who had a promising future ahead of him," he said.

The young hurler, who played right wing back for the Galway senior team would have celebrated his 23rd bithday on Friday

Meath's Joe Sheridan is set to enter politics as a candidate for Fianna Fail in next year's local elections.

Sheridan was recently left out of Mick O'Dowd's plans for the 2014 gaelic football season but he intends to use the spare time to seek a nomination from the Micheal Martin led party.

He revealed he was asked to consider running a year ago but only committed to it in recent weeks.

"I have been involved in the local community over the last number of years and enjoyed that and this is something I could give back to them; I could give them a voice," he told the Meath Chronicle.

Sheridan was one of four GAA players who greeted Queen Elizabeth on her visit to Croke Park two years ago and he has also met Michelle Obama.

He is following in the footsteps of his former club and county team-mate Graham Geraghty who unsuccessfully stood for Fine Gael in the 2007 General Election.

21.   The semi-final between Cork and Dublin

23.   The All-Ireland final
24.   The All-Ireland reply
25.   The 5.00pm start for the reply
26.   The GAA's utter contempt by proposals to restructure the league 2014 by pandering to Cork and Limerick.
27.   Kerry going to participate in the Munster championship 2014
28.          Down winning the Christy Ring with on last puck
29.          Antrim beating Wexford (who were 1/80) in All-Ireland u-21 semi final.

General discussion / The Rebel County
September 29, 2013, 09:03:43 AM
Why is Cork called the rebel county? I mind my old lecturer dismissing the fact that it was because it was full of IRA men in the 20s and had another reason but i cant remember. Does anyone know?

GAA Discussion / Where do you like to watch a big match?
September 22, 2013, 01:01:11 AM
Just wondering what people are doing tomorrow for the final?

Undecided to sit in the house and have peace to listen to commentary or venture to the bar where the vast majority of the clients will be shouting for a team in England.

Just seen this through twitter, what is the reasoning for this????

General discussion / Another sectarian headcount
April 29, 2013, 07:32:51 PM
A religious headcount of students at Northern Ireland's further education colleges has shown most are polarised in terms of Catholics and Protestants.

Five of the six institutions have many more students of one religious denomination than the other.

The largest imbalance is at the North West college in Londonderry, where Catholic students outnumber Protestants by more than three to one.

The DUP said too few Protestants were going into further education.

The figures show there are also many more Catholics students than Protestants in the South West and Southern regional colleges.

However, in two other further education colleges, there is an opposite imbalance in the student population - Protestants greatly outnumber Catholics at the Northern and South Eastern colleges.

'Chill factor'

The denomination of about a quarter of students is not known.

A spokesperson for Stormont's Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) said the figures broadly reflect the population of the geographical area where each college is based.

The DEL spokesperson added that very few students report a "chill factor" that might deter them from attending a particular college.

The DUP MLA, Alex Easton said he is concerned that fewer Protestants, overall, are opting to go into further education and training.

He wants DEL and the colleges to do more to attract them to study at the six institutions.

Looks like the G8 Summit of the rich and powerful leaders is going to rob Fermanagh of a home tie.

Rise up in Roslea and Lisnakea and don't let this happen!

G8 summit could rob Fermanagh of home game in Ulster SFC

The arrival of Barack Obama and the G8 world leaders in Enniskillen in June could rob Fermanagh of a home tie in the Ulster Football Championship.

Dignitaries will be arriving in the Erne county for the start of the G8 summit at the Lough Erne Resort on Sunday 16 June.

That is the same day Fermanagh start their Ulster championship campaign.

The Erne County is expected to be in a state of effective lockdown because of the G8 security arrangements.

If Cavan beat Armagh in the preliminary round, the Breffnimen will be due to travel to Brewster Park on 16 June.

The problem will be averted if Armagh defeat Cavan on 19 May which would result in the provincial quarter-final taking place at the Athletic Grounds.

Ulster Council secretary Danny Murphy has acknowledged the potential for a major change to the fixture schedule.

"We know there is a likelihood we won't be able to stage a home fixture on 16 June should the Cavan game materialise"

Fermanagh GAA spokesman Johnny McManus

And he hinted the only alternative would be a change of venue - as TV commitments mean the date of the game cannot be changed.

"We're aware of the situation but our council took a decision to make no final determination on the outcome until after the Cavan v Armagh game on 19 May," revealed the Ulster Council chief.

"We have to wait until that match is played but we know the full ramifications of what is taking place in Enniskillen."

It's understood the Ulster Council have been in discussions with security personnel and various government bodies in recent months regarding the potential fixture clash with the G8 summit, which takes place on 17-18 June.

The world leaders are expected to arrive in Fermanagh on Sunday 16 June, with one Fermanagh official admitting the county will be "in total lockdown".

With many world dignitaries also staying in Cavan, there are also major doubts over the possible staging of the game in Breffni Park.

Cavan officials have indicated they would be happy to stage the tie, and then surrender home advantage to Fermanagh the next time the counties meet.

But the prospect of thousands of supporters travelling with ease through two counties which will be awash with the world's top security personnel is remote.

Cavan secretary Liam McCabe said: "We are aware there is a potential problem on 16 June, but it is not an issue for us at the moment."

Clones is a more obvious choice and Fermanagh would be happier with a neutral venue, in the event of Brewster Park being ruled out.

"We know there is a likelihood we won't be able to stage a home fixture on 16 June should the Cavan game materialise," admitted county spokesman Johnny McManus.

"We just have to be flexible and work with the Ulster Council and see what the best outcome will be."
