General discussion / Sunday World hanging front page
November 01, 2009, 02:36:46 PM
I picked up the Sunday World off the shelf this morning and it had a photograph of a man hanging from a bridge on the Belfast to Bangor Road. I thought it was an absolutely disgusting, tasteless pic to put on the front page (or any page) especially as this unfortunate soul must have relatives and friends here. First time in my life I complained to the Press Complaints Commision. I thought it was shocking and no need to show that.  Any thoughts?....

Greysteel killer back behind bars
Torrens Knight was released early due to the Good Friday Agreement
One of the men convicted of murdering eight people in the Greysteel massacre has been sent back to prison after his early release licence was suspended.
Torrens Knight was given 12 life sentences for his part in the 1993 bar murders and for killing four workmen in Castlerock earlier the same year.
He was released under the Good Friday Agreement after serving seven years.
However, last week he was found guilty of attacking two sisters in a bar in Coleraine on 30 May 2008.
Eight people were shot dead when the UFF opened fire inside the Rising Sun bar in the County Londonderry village of Greysteel at Halloween 1993.
One of the gunmen shouted "trick or treat" before opening fire on customers.
In 2005, another of the Greysteel killers, Stephen Irwin, who had also been released early under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, was convicted of slashing a football supporter with a knife during an Irish Cup Final football match.
A week later, his licence was revoked and he was returned to prison.

Cherie Blair reveals Paisley snub
Cherie Blair revealed that Rev Ian Paisley never once shook her hand during her husband's time in power because of her Catholic faith.
Former Prime Minister Tony Blair was shown the courtesy by the veteran Northern Ireland politician because he had yet to convert, she said.
Mrs Blair said: "From beginning to end Ian Paisley never shook my hand. His wife would but Ian Paisley wouldn't because I was Catholic. Of course, Tony wasn't (Catholic) at the time.."

GAA Discussion / Harte's book-
October 10, 2009, 03:00:20 PM
I see 'HARTE-PRESENCE IS THE ONLY THING'...been well trumphed in Irish News today with ads on two different pages for it.
Apparently.."In his candid and forthright autobiography MH pulls no punches, uncovering the truth behind some of the the contraversies that have dogged his career and revealing for the first time the stories behind the tensions within the Tyrone camp in 2004."

Has anyone read it? The Fox is getting a bit tight with the ££s and would want to hear what it is like first. I've a feeling 'some' may be the operative word regarding the contraversies. It couldn't be in his interest to reveal all. As for 2004, is that about his son Mark playing or what? I remember he played in replacement for Brian McGuigan when Tyrone lost quarter final to Mayo. Although he did come on in 2005 Ulster final against Armagh and it was his last outing for the county. I would have put 2004 as imposible to focus on winning Sam after the sad death of Cormac in March however.
I think the plan might have been to be siting beside Brian Cody on Late Late Show last night as two winning All Ireland managers  :'(

October 02, 2009, 04:54:53 PM
I met Ziggy today. I told him what happened to me with cruel, sneaky snakes contacting my family about a message on the Board. He said, "The world has gone to hell in a handcart.' He thanks everyone for their kind words and is working on a project of to liberate himself from all wicketness, none which eminated from this board though. His light shines strong and it is onwards and upwards for the Zigster and Greencastle GFC  8).
To those who sent PM to me sending on their best wishes he is very grateful. ..

General discussion / Happy 60th to the Boss
September 23, 2009, 05:35:49 PM
Yes! the Boss is 60 and an still an inspiration. The Fox does not get too starry eyed about any of these 'superstars' but this man is truly a legend. Saw him in RDS ... 1987, I think...unreal, and other times with E Street band including this year and last summer, on The Seegers Seesions Band Tour at the Odyssey (We Shall Overcome... awesome) and sitting on a stool in the Kings Hall with a guitar a number of years ago. My hero...THE BOSS

All-Ireland winning hurler Gerald McCarthy was warned in a menacing phone call that if he didn't resign as Cork hurling boss he would be shot dead.
The revelation came as Trevor O'Reilly (30), yesterday pleaded guilty before Cork District Court to making a menacing phone call to the home of the former Rebel hurling boss.
The phone call was made on March 5 this year at the height of the stand-off between Mr McCarthy and Cork's 2008 hurling panel which had refused to play under his management.
The phone call had nothing whatsoever to do with the Cork hurling panel.
Sgt Martin Canny told the Court that, at 9.24pm that night, Paul McCarthy (28), the son of the All-Ireland hurling star, answered a phone call at the family home.
A voice in a Northern Irish accent asked whether it was the home of Gerald McCarthy, the manager of the Cork hurling team. When Paul McCarthy confirmed that it was, the voice said: "Tell him (Gerald McCarthy) that this is the Continuity IRA in North Tyrone. Tell him if he does not resign as manager of the Cork hurling team he will get a bullet in the back of the head."
...sentencing was adjourned.

Due to the high demand from posters to wind up 'Northerners' this thread should serve that purpose and could help stop other threads descending into an anti northern rhetoric. Post your comments here about those darn 'Nordies.'

General discussion / Charity buckets
July 27, 2009, 10:10:53 AM
Have been uneasy about this for a while and wonder what other people think. Am really not trying to be offensive but does anyone else feel uneasy about the amount of buckets being left on supermarket counters and at big games etc for charities especially for cancer charities. Before anyone attacks here... an immediate member of my family died in Newry Hopice a few years ago and I have seen the devastation locally over the last number of years. It is just, who monitors the people who empty these buckets full of cash? what does the money actually be used for? etc. There must be millions collected. It seems so open to abuse and where there is unaccountable money...well, ...temptation? I saw a bucket recently just had 'cancer'wrote on it... Hopefully goes without saying I believe if all the money goes to cancer care it is tremendous but it seems so open to abuse...

Man thought cocaine was sex drug
A man caught with suspected cocaine worth £6,000 has told the High Court he thought he had bought medication for boosting his sexual performance.
Marek Cernay, 26, said he paid £25 for the drug after confiding his problems with erectile dysfunction to a stranger he met at a supermarket in Coleraine.
Refusing bail, Mr Justice McLaughlin said his explanation was a fairy tale.
A lawyer for the prosecution said that during questioning Mr Cernay claimed to have met a man in a Tesco car park and told him about his physical difficulties.
"That male then produces these four bags of powder which are worth £6,000 and sells them to him for £25," the prosecuting lawyer added.
Mr Cernay's lawyer said his client, an electrician and shop fitter who came to Northern Ireland from Slovakia more than four years ago, denied knowing he was buying cocaine.
He said: "He has given a colourful explanation for being in possession of the items, but he maintains that explanation.
"He simply says he purchased them in order to enhance his sexual performance."
But Mr Justice McLaughlin questioned the alleged circumstances of Cernay meeting someone and "within minutes discussing his erectile dysfunction, to find this man mysteriously has the answer for £25".
Refusing bail, the judge added: "This is another one for the book of fairytales and it's going to be a long book."

This boy could get a stiff sentence  :o

Lawyer jailed for inciting murder

Johnny Sandhu

Disgraced lawyer in the dock

A Derry solicitor who pleaded guilty to inciting loyalist paramilitaries to murder has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Manmohan 'Johnny' Sandhu, 44, also pleaded guilty to four charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice at Belfast Crown Court.
The charges were brought after police secretly recorded his interviews with clients at Antrim police station.
The judge told him: "It was a wicked thing to incite men of violence."
Mr Justice Deeny continued: "This was all the more so when you were a solicitor.
"Such conduct must be deserving of a severe sentence."
The charges against Sandhu, of Colby Avenue, arose from the attempted murder of taxi driver Jonathan Hillier in Newtownards in August 2005 and the murders of Jameson Lockhart and Andrew Cully.
An earlier court hearing was told that Sandhu, who practised out of offices in Limavady, incited members of the UVF to murder Mr Hillier as he recovered in hospital in August 2005 from a failed attempt on his life.
The prosecution said Sandhu phoned an unknown person from Antrim police station and indicated that Mr Hillier "should be taken out".
The lawyer also attempted to pervert the course of justice surrounding the investigation into the shooting.
In another secret recording, Sandhu was overheard coaching his client, Christopher Dinsmore, who was accused of murdering Jameson Lockhart.
Mr Lockhart was shot as he sat in a lorry on the Lower Newtownards Road in Belfast in July 2005 during a power struggle between the UVF and LVF.
Sandhu told his client how to explain how gloves with cartridge discharge residue came to be seized from his house.
According to transcripts read at an earlier court hearing, Sandhu initially suggested Mr Dinsmore joined a rifle club to explain the residue, and then he suggested that he say they belonged to murdered UDA boss Jim Gray.
Mr Justice Deeny said Sandhu went far beyond his role as a legal advisor.
"Reading the interviews the picture is not that of an officer of the court discharging his duty to his client but of an enthusiastic gang member."
Sandhu has been suspended by the Law Society.
Following sentencing Pamela Atchison, a senior lawyer in the Public Prosecution Service, said: "The conviction of a solicitor for offences including incitement to murder has raised important issues with regard to legal professional privilege.
"Legal professional privilege does not include communications which are made for the purpose of obtaining advice on the commission of a future crime, or communications which are part of a crime."

Gers star hurt by exploding egg

Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot was taken to hospital after an egg he was microwaving exploded in his face.

The 25-year-old Scotland international was poaching the egg at his home near Mauchline, Ayrshire, when the accident happened.

It is understood hot liquid squirted onto his face and scalded his cheek when he opened the microwave door.

The footballer was treated in hospital, before being allowed to go home following the incident on Sunday.
