Irish give Eurovision the bird
Derek Mcgovern 31/01/2008
The Eurovision Song contest has been around for so long it pre-dates Terry Wogan's original hair.

Despite being the longest-running show on TV, Eurovision has come under fire because so many countries devalue it by block-voting for their neighbours.

This of course is no use to the UK because we are routinely despised by everyone, initially because we used to invade and ravage most of the rival countries via our military might - but more recently via 18-30 Holidays.

Ireland has a long tradition of taking Eurovision seriously, which is ironic since no one in Europe takes Ireland seriously.

This year, however, the Irish have officially given up trying, a bit like Derby in the Premier League. The once-proud Eurovision warriors have demonstrated what they now think of the contest by voting for a turkey, Dustin, to represent them.

The bird has been installed 7-4 favourite to represent Ireland and 33-1 to win the whole competition.

If Dustin does well he could get his own Christmas musical, which of course would be called Stayin' Alive.

Passed away this afternoon

Fears grow for TV star Beadle
Published: Wednesday, 30 January 2008, 11:47AM

Television entertainer Jeremy Beadle is reported to be gravely ill as he battles pneumonia in a north London hospital.

The 59-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2005, just ten months after having a tumour removed from his kidney.

Beadle's wife, Sue, 60, and daughters Cassie, 21 and Bonnie, 19, have been keeping a bedside vigil.

Last week, Beadle's agent said: "Anybody suffering from pneumonia is going to be pretty poorly.

"We are all hopeful he will pull through and be fine."

Police outlaw 'fenians and huns'

Fenian, hun, taig and jaffa are among the terms outlawed for police officers in a pamphlet which outlines to them how to avoid causing offence.
The Guide to Appropriate Language has various categories of words and suggests acceptable alternatives.

Religion, minority ethnic communities, gay people, women and transsexuals are among the linguistic issues covered.

Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde says in his foreword that using the right language "sends an important message".

"It is essential that we take a lead in using language that does not exclude colleagues or members of the community, does not stereotype and always shows a wholehearted commitment to supporting our Equal Opportunities Policy," said Sir Hugh.

Catholics should not be called fenians, taigs, chucks or spongers, while Protestants should not be referred to as huns, black, prods or jaffas, the booklet says.

There is one exception to the use of fenian, but it is probably rarely used.

"It may be perfectly acceptable to use it in an appropriate historical context, for example, if referring to the Fenian Brotherhood," it says.

Officers are advised that if a witness uses language which is not politically correct, they should use speech marks to attribute this when taking a statement.

Terms which could be used by Life on Mars' 1970s old-school cop DCI Gene Hunt are also banned when referring to the gay community.

When it comes to older members of the population, police should not call them geriatric, old codgers or say someone is "just like an aul' woman".

"Old can carry connotations of being worn-out and of little further use. It can also be used as a term of abuse," says the booklet.

The booklet is "intended to help avoid the unintentional offence caused by unthinking use of language and to improve relationships between officers, staff and across the whole community".

All-Ireland warning from Delaney

FAI chief executive John Delaney believes there will be an All-Ireland League, but not before 2012.
A contract involving the eircom Legaue and the FAI runs to 2011 and only then could an All-Ireland League be considered, according to Delaney.

"Given time I think this may happen, I'm sure of that," he said.

Plans to start an All-Ireland League in August this year were described as "pie in the sky" by IFA chief executive Howard Wells earlier this month.

Delaney also warns against rushing into setting up any new league.

"It should be done step-by-step, not in a mad rush the way that's been talked about now seems to involve," he told the Irish Independent.

"At the right juncture and if it was supported on both sides of the border and done in a way that wasn't divisive then from a personal point of view I'd like it to happen.

"I've spoken to Howard Wells about it and we'll be meeting again at the end of the month where it will be one of a wide range of issues we'll be discussing.

"It can't happen without us - I think everyone has to accept that.

"Without our support then there's no recognition from Uefa.

"Personally I think it's important that we set up a working group with possibly the two governments involved to see if it would work.

"But any quicker than the end of the current contract over the Eircom League is not going to work in my opinion."

Given their ever failing relationship with Linfield, you wonder where the Linfield support lies on this idea?

Minister Poots at Newry GAA match

Sports Minister Edwin Poots became the first DUP politician to attend a Gaelic football match in an official capacity at Pairc Esler, Newry, on Wednesday.
He was at the McKenna Cup game between Down and Donegal.

Mr Poots was welcomed by GAA president Nickey Brennan, director general Liam Mulvihill and Ulster Council president Tom Daly.

The invitation to attend a GAA fixture had been accepted when Mr Poots spoke at a GAA conference in October.

"This is a landmark occasion in the further development of community relations on the island of Ireland when a Unionist Minister is prepared to attend one of our games," said president Brennan.

"For me this highlights the good standing of the Ulster Council who I know have developed an exceptionally positive relationship with Mr Poots.

"I am absolutely enthused that the Minister has been so receptive to the role and relevance of the GAA in Ulster and the contribution it makes to sport and communities.

"I wish to acknowledge the genuine commitment and professionalism of Edwin Poots in assisting the GAA with our development programmes in Ulster.

"I look forward to him taking up my invitation to attend Croke Park for an event in the near future."
