How has this clown lasted as long?

The culture minister has defended asking the organisers of the Belfast Festival at Queen's to include pro-Israeli views and Christian music.

Nelson McCausland's demands were made in an e-mail to the director of the Belfast Festival, which was obtained through a freedom of information request.

Mr McCausland said he would like "some southern gospel music" included.

He also wanted "a view sympathetic to Israel in any relevant talk or debate".

Mr McCausland, who became the culture minister in June 2009, attended a dinner with the vice chancellor of Queen's to discuss this year's festival programme.

He and some of his officials also held a meeting with staff from Queen's, including the festival director Graeme Farrow, in March 2010 to discuss the content of the festival.

The e-mail was part of an exchange between the director of the Belfast Festival at Queen's, Graeme Farrow, and the permanent secretary at DCAL.

In an e-mail seen by the BBC Mr Farrow mentioned that he was preparing a paper for the minister's attention.

E-mail
The permanent secretary replied that the minister expected the paper to "propose an audit over, say, the last five or six years of the range of views represented in political talks and debates in the festival and of the range of traditional music in relevant cultural events".

The e-mail lists two specific things which the minister wanted to see included in the festival.

If we are to build a shared and better future in NI, then it must be based on balance, fairness and inclusion"

Nelson McCausland
Culture Minister
It said the minister would like to see "a view sympathetic to Israel in any relevant talk or debate" included in the festival programme and "some southern gospel music, which is immensely popular".

Mr McCausland defended his intervention.

Shared future
"What I was saying to the festival, and I have said it to other arts organisations and sectors, is that if we are to build a shared and better future in NI, then it must be based on balance, fairness and inclusion," he said.

"You can't have a shared future based on discrimination and exclusion and simply, I was saying to them, make sure that your programmes, over a period of time, reflect balance, fairness and inclusion."

The culture minister said he had asked the festival to include pro-Israeli views as a previous Israeli speaker had had his invitation withdrawn at the last minute by the festival.

"How can you have a situation like that? It's bad for the image of Northern Ireland," he said.

Mr McCausland said he had asked the festival to include Christian music after attending a southern gospel event.

Logic and argument
"Here is a popular musical genre that would attract a considerable audience, I would hope that over a period of time, you would include that sort of music, because one of the things we're saying to the festival and others is, you must generate as much income as possible.

"There was a logic and argument behind what I was saying."

The Belfast Festival is supported by a number of funders. Its major sponsor is the Ulster Bank which announced a three-year sponsorship deal of £1m in 2008.

It has also received £300,000 in funding from DCAL over the past three years, and it will receive £100,000 from the Arts Council through its annual funding stream in 2011.

Belfast's Odyssey Arena is hosting this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in early November, although an exact date hasn't been announced.

MTV has also announced plans to host a series of local events around Belfast in the lead up to the EMAs.

The Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Pat Convery, said: "It is fitting that the EMAs are coming to Belfast, one of Europe's most exciting and vibrant cities and with around 35% of our population below the age of 25.

"Belfast has a rich musical history and has produced artists such as Snow Patrol and the legendary Van Morrison and we now have an unprecedented opportunity to shine a spotlight on our musical heritage while also providing a major boost to our economy.

"I am delighted that MTV has chosen Belfast.

"The decision to host such a world class event in our city is an endorsement of what we have been saying for some time now. Belfast is a happening place."

I recently got myself a Western Digital External Hard Disk to back up all my stuff on the computer. Got it hooked up this evening, after much procrastination. I've tried to run 'Time Machine' on the iMac, but getting an error code -43. What's that and how can I fix it?

GAA Discussion / GAA to Free-to-air in the US?

GAA proposal has tourism goal - Sean Kelly MEP

- Free-to-air Championship GAA matches suggested for US citizens

Fine Gael MEP and former GAA President, Sean Kelly, is proposing an innovative tourism campaign which will bolster traditional US-Irish tourism links.

"Some 42 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, not to mention those Irish people who recently emigrated to seek employment in the United States, and are keen to maintain all links with the homeland. This market holds enormous potential. I am asking the GAA to explore the possibility of offering free-to-air Championship GAA matches on American TV," Mr Kelly explained.

The Ireland South MEP, who is a member of the European Parliament's Sport and Culture Committee, believes the initiative could be developed by tourism bodies in Ireland and be used as a promotional opportunity.

"Speaking to GAA members belonging to the San Francisco club this week, it was clear that there is an enormous demand for such a service. The GAA has a massive following in America and these fans are also potential tourists who may lead to a boost in our tourism figures," he said.

Mr Kelly was delighted to meet Irish GAA players while in America as the sole Irish representative invited to the 69th EU-US Inter-parliamentary Meeting, due to his membership of the European Parliament's committee with responsibility for relations with the United States.

"While it is sad to see so many of our young, talented people move abroad to seek employment, it is reassuring to know that the Association continues to look after Irish people by welcoming them into a society that becomes a home from home."

Mr Kelly travelled via economy class to California, where he had already established strong links with local GAA clubs during his Presidency of the GAA.

Casement Park in Belfast is being lined up to host the next International Rules test in Ireland in 2013.

Limeirick's Gaelic Grounds got the nod this year ahead of Casement Park, but the Anderstown Road venue will be in a better position to stage the game in three years as it is due to be upgraded to a 40,000 all-seater stadium in the meantime.

"We would love to be in a position to do it up there (in Casement Park). It was considered this time around but it just wasn't considered quite suitable enough. We needed more seats basically," GAA Operations Manager Feargal McGill said yesterday.

"It would be an absolute ambition of everyone in the GAA to have an international game staged in Belfast, or somewhere in the Six Counties. That would be absolutely outstanding. It would be a nice payback to many GAA people who have worked so hard up there over the years."

McGill was speaking at the announcement of a 60-man shortlist for the Ulster Bank Sigerson Cup Team of the Century. The 60 nominees all played Sigerson Cup football in the last 100 years and include Maurice Fitzgerald (UCC/Kerry), Billy Morgan (UCC/Kerry) and Enda Colleran (UCG/Galway). The final 15 will be decided next month by a committee chaired by Dr Mick Loftus.

A broken hearted Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone woman has pleaded with thieves to return her beloved Chihuahua that has been her constant companion during a time of
sickness. She has also offered a reward of £500 for its safe return.

Pearl's Lockhart's husband Alan was attacked with a sledgehammer during the raid after he discovered three burglars in his home on Castletown Road on Monday
afternoon. He suffered a cut eye and injuries to his arm. The heartless thieves stole money, jewellery and the family's pet dog. However, a clearly distraught
Mrs Lockhart said that she is not concerned about the valuables and only wants her Chihuahua, Bruce returned.

She said, "He was more than a dog. My heart is broken. I am devastated. I have cried so hard since Monday. Three years ago, my son bought him for me as a
pick-me-up when I was sick. Wherever I lay, he lay and wherever I went Bruce came with me. I don't care about the money or jewellery, I just want Bruce
back."

She added, "It was my son Stephen bought him for me as a wee comfort and anyone knows me always saw me with my little dog. I am appealing to the people who took
him, to please leave him somewhere we can collect him. If they could find it in their hearts to leave him with a priest or a minister or charity shop, we would
be so happy."

The stolen silver Audi used in the raid was found burned out near Newry on Tuesday.

As you are aware the planned budget cuts are going to have a detrimental effect on future capital and revenue funding for sport in the nine Counties of Ulster, therefore to ensure that Ulster Clubs benefit from future Sport NI/DCAL/DSD funding and future Capital Funding programmes from the Irish Sports Council in the 26 Counties we are encouraging all Clubs to send delegates to the Ulster GAA Conference to get information on funding, governance, strategic planning and future applications.

On the day there will be ministerial representation from both

Dublin Government- Department of Foreign Affairs
Department of Social Development
Additionally Senior Officials from DCAL and Sport NI will also be present as well as representatives from local Councils both North and South.
We will also have representatives from a range of organisations and groups including Banks and Social and Community Lending organisations to review loan levels and interest rates.

Ulster GAA Clubs have been extremely successful at securing public funding support for their capital development projects due the collaborate and supportive approach that
the Ulster Council have adopted. If you Club has a significant future project planned or is the process of completing a project or has significant debt due to the recent completion of a project we are asking you to attend the event as we will have representatives from various organisations present on the day to lend support and give advice.

Finally as all Clubs should now be aware attendance at this Conference by representatives of your Club  is a requirement of the Club Maith (Club Mark) Award. As you know from November 2010 onward no Club can apply for future funding programmes  or for GAA grant funding with out first having a level of Club Maith therefore it is vitally important that you Club is represented at this event.

To register to your place at the Conference please e-mail conference.ulster@gaa.ie or contact Sharon Haughey at 02837521900
