General discussion / Portuguese & Polish to vote SDLP
February 08, 2011, 10:35:08 AM
The first Portuguese national to stand for election in Northern Ireland has been selected by the SDLP.

Daniel Gouveia (39), an interpreter, originally from Lisbon in Portugal, will be standing for Craigavon Borough Council in the May local government elections.

Mr Gouveia said: "There is a great appetite among the Portuguese community to get involved in local politics in Craigavon and I will try my best to give a voice to new citizens and indeed everyone."

This is a big play by the Stoops who have already got a Polish woman standing for the council elections in Craigavon.  There are many thousands of Polish, Lithuanian & Portuguese in Northern Ireland, particularly in Craigavon & Dungannon.  They are predominantly Catholic, but most probably have not voted up to now.  If the SDLP or Sinn Fein can encourage them to vote, then they could make a big difference in the delicate numbers game that is NI politics.

I know the big story is the Dail election on the 11 March, but less than two months later we also have the NI Assembly Elections on 5 May 2011.

If you are not sure if you are registered then go to

http://www.eoni.org.uk/ or phone 0800 4320 712.

It is only a few months away, so check now to get registered.  This is especially important for students that may have changed addresses.  If you are not on, then you can't vote.

From the Daily Mirror :D

Lisburn Distillery chairman Bobby Hanna is demanding the IFA review the fees commanded by Irish League referees.
Hanna revealed that the gate for Tuesday nights Co-op Insurance cup quarter final with Newry City was a paltry £795.  He claims the fees and expenses for the four match officials totalled £465 plus VAT.  Following further deductions including ambulance medical provision, Distillery & Newry shared£68.
"We have played three rounds in this competition.  We got nothing from our round with Armagh City, £38 from the Institute game, and now £34 from this game."  "Clubs cannot be expected ot survive when you look at what we pay out to officials"

Jesus H Christ, Why O Why O Why do BBC NI, UTV, Radio Ulster, The Belfast Telegraph & The Daily Mirror continue to give blanket coverage to these Mickey Mouse clubs and their crappy wee competitions that no -one goes to.
Enough is Enough, at Pairc Esler last night the stand was full, and a good crowd on the far side for a warm up competition in the pouring rain, but if 35 people turn up next Wednesday night to see the neighbours play some other crappy saccer team, you can guarantee they will get more coverage.  There is more people on the pitch than there are in the stands at some local soccer matches.
From now on if Newry v Distillery is being reported on the news, then I want to know why the likes of Dorsey v Forkhill, or Drumgath v Shamrocks is not being reported on the same bulletin.  I've had enough of GAA not being given fair play.

General discussion / Patsy Brogan - Bog Hotel
January 11, 2011, 01:36:18 PM
Was heading up to Donegal soon for the weekend with a crowd of boys, and was wondering if it was worth calling into Patsy's for a few tins.  Anyone been there?  Is it any craic?

Would we be better staying in Donegal town, I don't want to head the whole way out to the middle of no-where to find out it's a cold damp oul hole being run by a weird old perv.

General discussion / Record your own song
September 27, 2010, 03:15:14 PM
Does anyone know how you would go about recording a song from home.  Surely nowadays with all the technology available it should be fairly simple.

I havnae a clue how to do it, but I would imagine that if you have a backing track/karaoke track and a microphone plugged into your computer you could record it by using some online program.

Can any techies help?

Tommy & Hector play a mad Native American Indian rain dance type music from time to time.  It was on again at the weekend and I have heard them play it before.  I was waiting for them to say who or what it was, and they said it was the new tune by The Corrs.

Has anyone heard this?
Do you know what it is?
Or where I can get it?

General discussion / Crossmaglen (The Movie)
September 02, 2010, 09:51:56 PM
Has anyone heard the latest on this.  Months ago the Examiner said that they might be coming to shoot some scenes in the square in Cross, but I cannot seem to find any information on the net.
Ben Kingsley, Brenda Fricker and Pete Postlethwaite are all in it, so it should hopefully be good.

If I knew when the filming was happening it would be interesting to go and hang around and see what goes on, maybe even get a part as an extra ::)

Any info anyone?

Hurling Discussion / Mighty Blue & Gold - Tipp album
March 31, 2010, 12:31:01 PM
Does anyone know where i could get my hands on a copy of this.  €17.70 on the Tipperary GAA shop website I thought was a bit steep in the middle of a recession with no work on.

I live in the North, so local shops in Tipp are no good to me.

Not surprisingly I cannot find it on ebay or amazon or goldendiscs.ie

Tom Daly recently stepped down as president to glowing newspaper articles in the Irish News & Gaelic Life about what a great president he was, and I have no doubt that he did a fine job in most of the duties he was responsible for.
However his presidency coincided with an unprecedented campaign of hostility and bitterness against the GAA in the North from the DUP, UUP, BBC & UTV.
However, not once did I ever hear the Ulster Council really try to counteract this.  The BBC are completely unable to discuss any GAA related matter without bringing in Barry McElduff (SF), and someone from the DUP to argue about how sectarian the GAA is.  Enough is enough.
Even when Tyrone won their historic 3rd All-Ireland in 2008, the next mornings discussion on BBC was not about, Sean Cavanagh, Joe McMahon, Mulligan's mullet, Declan O'Sullivan,Tommy Walsh or Mickey Harte.  It was about Kevin Lynch's, national anthems and cold house for unionists.  But that is just one of dozens of examples.
No-one from the GAA had the balls to say STOP.  That eejit McElduff is seen by the BBC as the GAA's Ulster Spokesman.
I am hoping that new president Aogan O'Fearghail will do better.  I heard him speaking before, and he is a charismatic character.  He can't do any worse.

General discussion / Bodhran design
November 10, 2009, 12:46:00 PM
Lads for a Christmas present I was wanting to personalise a plain bodhran by putting a county crest on it or, the county name as gaeilge in celtic calligraphy.

Is there a way to do this, without simply painting it on.  I'm not really a computer buff so I'm not entirely sure what is and isnt possible to do.

General discussion / Irish Food Hamper
November 06, 2009, 01:12:25 PM
Lads, after work, I am going to buy the contents of a food parcel to send to the sister in Australia.  A taste of home hamper for christmas

I don't want to send big pots of jam or bottles of red lemonade, as they are too heavy and will shoot up the postaging costs.

Any ideas?

Kimberleys, Mikados, Barrys tea bags, taytos.  Can't really think of anything else.  Any ideas?

General discussion / Copying cds
June 19, 2009, 02:34:25 PM
I used to be able to copy cd's onto my computer and burn them onto blank cds.  Now they don't work.  I don't why.  I am still doing in on Windows Media player, onto a sony blank cd.  In my car cd player most times these cd's just won't work.  Very occasionally they will work before crackling and breaking down.

Can anyone suggest what to do?

General discussion / Historic Vote June 4th 2009
June 03, 2009, 04:05:34 PM
June 4th 2009 could be the day that a bloodless revolution begins.  If two nationalists are elected, then it will set in motion an unstoppable chain of events leading to a United Ireland.

Get out and vote

Transfer your vote

Encourage your friends and family to get out and vote.

Ring or text your brother, sister, parents, best friend, your cousin, your neighbour.

Have they voted?  Tell them to get up to the school and vote.

It's that easy!!

Over the centuries, countless thousands of Irishmen and women have fought and died for a united Ireland, all you have to do is get out and tick two boxes.

Please.
