General discussion / Do you wish England well in soccer?
September 10, 2009, 11:20:08 AM
I know what most answers are going to be but as someone who once fervently hoped they'd be whipped in every game yet found himself grinning like a Cheshire cat last night as they rained goals on Croatia, I'm curious as to what the scale of the antipathy is

Given the prevalence of supporting soccer teams with whom a person would have no inherent relationship like (ahem) Liverpool, does anyone know anyone who supports a GAA county in that way? I'm not talking about people who support such-and-such because their auld fella is from there, I'm talking about someone who supports Kerry because Micko and co were winning all around them at the time or they support Tyrone because they thought Plunkett Donaghy was da bomb.

General discussion / Will you be cheering for NI tonight?
November 21, 2007, 03:15:21 PM
I've voted No. While I wish happiness to many NI fans in general, and those who contribute to this board in particular, qualification for Norn Iron would unleash the most obnoxious orgy of self-congratulatory backslapping on being thebestfansintheworld since, well, the Republic last qualifed for a tournament. ¡Viva España!

I've been off for the last three months with Guillain-Barré syndrome. Work have been exceptionally cool about it and haven't insisted I go back. After a consultation with their occupational therapist, I've decided to go back in a couple of weeks (subject to their agreement). I could easily stay off for another few months because I still have about as much strength as our cat and, to be honest, it's been pretty good - I'm in no pain and can get around the house no problem, so it's like an extended holiday in many ways. But I'm nervous I may become institutionalised, so to speak, so I've decided off my own bat to go back.

The question I'd ask is: did you find it hard to get back into the swing of things? Am I exaggerating the possibility of turning into a slob who is incapable of doing the routine of work?

The Hurling All-Stars were named this afternoon.

All Ireland Champions Kilkenny get six places on the 2007 team, while Waterford are second with a county record of five, All Ireland runners-up Limerick have three and Tipperary one.

The All Star team in full shows Brian Murray of Limerick in goal, a full back line of Michael Kavanagh of Kilkenny, Declan Fanning of Tipperary and Jackie Tyrell of Kilkenny.

At half back it's Tommy Walsh of Kilkenny, and the Waterford pair of Ken McGrath and Tony Browne.

In midfield it's Michael Walsh of Waterford and James "Cha" Fitzpatrick of Kilkenny.

At half forward it's Dan Shanahan of Waterford, Ollie Moran of Limerick and Stephen Molumphy of Waterford.

And at the full forward line it's Andrew O'Shaughnessy of Limerick, along with Kilkenny's Henry Shefflin and Eddie Brennan.

Must confess to being chuffed at the news. I had predicted three for Waterford, so five - our best ever haul - is very satisfying

General discussion / Xbox 360 - anyone got one?
September 25, 2007, 09:47:37 AM
My finances and the price of an Xbox 360 look to have reached that crossover point where it becomes attractive for me to buy one. So:

1) I don't have a HDTV. Is the improvement worth it with just a standard TV?

2) Anyone suffer from the Red Ring of Death? If so, how well / badly did Microsoft deal with it?

3) Has a 20GB hard drive been enough for your needs i.e. should I insist on getting an Elite?

General discussion / Thank goodness for the French media
September 21, 2007, 09:47:34 PM
If they hadn't fired up the team with their smears, that could have been a massacre. As it was, er . . .

Plenty of people do it, judging by the decibel level

No one admits to doing it

Now's your chance to 'fess up
