Is Johno one of football's greatest ever managers, as evidenced by his 2 All Ireland's with Galway, and a famous 1994 Connacht Title with Leitrim??.........or in the case of Galway, was he just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time as an exceptional crop of players emerged such as Meehan's , Joyce, Donnellan, Divilly etc?.......Could most top managers have won an All Ireland with those players?

Have Mayo really progressed in his second coming, or did the Mayo Co.Board make a big mistake in shafting Mickey Moran in 2006?.......Is O'Mahony hanging on to the Mayo job for fear of alienating voters by packing it in, or is he more likely to alienate some of them by staying on?

Roscommon's decline into a Division 4 team highlights a serious problem rampant in Roscommon football at the moment.
The remarkable thing is, that when our seniors were competitive at a much higher level, our underage teams were hopeless and were often whipping boys for Galway and Mayo.
Now the roles have been completely reversed. After our minors won the All Ireland in 2006, our subsequent minor teams have been very competitive in Connacht, more than holding their own.

Our Under 21's have just ended an 11 year drought by winning the Connacht title.

Yet whilst this has been going on, our seniors have been in freefall. Why ???

A look at our record in the National League since Fergal O'Donnell took over, shows just 4 league wins in 14 games, spread over the last 2 leagues. Add in the annihilation at the hands of Mayo in last year's championship, and it proves beyond doubt, that if anything, things have got worse since he took over from John Maughan.

If Roscommon don't show a competitive streak in this year's Connacht championship, will it be a case of 'taxi for O'Donnell'?

A lot of people suggest that we have a lot of good young players coming through, who will see us a force again in 2 or 3 years time. But will they really?

If they were coming onto a decent team like Mayo etc, they would blend in and find their feet in time.
But in Roscommon, they are stepping onto the sinking ship that is the Roscommon Senior set up, and i fear it will be too much of a burden on them, in a negative environment.

Haven't heard the venue for this yet. Ros will need to show improvement in the forwards if they're to have any chance..Against Sligo, they went from the 12'th minute of the first half to the 26'th minute of the second half with a return of just one pointed free from that duration :o

They won't get away with that against the Dubs. Our u-21's don't seem to be as reliant for scores on Donie Shine as the Seniors seem to be. The u-21's have scored 3-15 in total against Mayo and Sligo with Shine accounting for just 0-5 of it.
We've conceded 1-15 in the two games.

I reckon Ros are not without at least a 50/50 chance in this game.

Are any of you buying/collecting these, and if so, what's the verdict on them so far.

In the Korea/Japan 2002 Dvd, it was noticed that Ireland's Group games never got a mention, even the draw with Germany. It was the Spanish match before we were told that the Irish were even at the World Cup :o

Am a Season Ticket holder at Old Trafford, and was planning to go to United v Fulham on March 14.

As i write, these are the prices being quoted by Aer Arann to fly from Galway to Manchester, and BMI Baby to go from Knock.

To fly from Galway on Saturday morning, and come back on Sunday night is quoted at 390.64 Euros!!!.....yes, it's not a misprint, it's 390.64 Euros...Add in one night in a hotel, and it's an absolute rip off.

To fly from Knock, you actually have to go on Friday, as for some strange reason, there's no flight over on the Saturday.
The Friday flight is 61.31 Euros PLUS Taxes and charges, whilst the appropriate flight back on Monday (the day after the game) is 106.31 Euros PLUS Taxes and charges.

Throw in the Knock levy of 10 Euros, plus about 35 Euros in car parking fees, and it all adds up to an extortionate rip off of fans by the airlines.

So much so, that they can f**k off with their prices. Instead i've sold my ticket for the game to someone else who obviously has deeper pockets than i have.

Imagine, if you are someone who has no interest in football and who needs to use these flights for other reasons :o

Surely the Consumers Rights should be looking at this carry on ???

General discussion / Mid West Radio (MWR)
January 26, 2010, 08:09:16 PM
What do the Mayo people on here think of Mid West Radio?

Heard Paul Claffey's show a few times recently and couldn't believe the amount of self promotion he indulged in.
He only seems to mainly play songs by 'singers' who are going on one of his music weekends away, and seems to continually push the likes of Mike Denver, John Mc Nicholl and anyone going on his weekedns away.

He never shuts his mouth about the Royal Theatre in Castlebar, and sometimes MWR sounds like nothing more than a promotional vehicle for the above venue.

The sports department was never the same since the passing of Willie 'The Shoe' and is a pale shadow of what it once was.

Any other opinions?

Instead of flicking between the United and Chelsea threads to view posts on this, i thought it made more sense to have one thread for all fans.

Fergie has stated that he faces a selection headache as he has a full squad of 26 FIT Players and reckons picking the subs will be harder than picking the team.

So, who do we think he should pick.

As for Chelsea, who is Grant likely to pick. Let's presume that Terry and Drogba will both be fit.

Here's a little distraction to keep us United fans relaxed in the tense days ahead as we try to clinch 2 major trophies.

I've been thinking about our greatest XI during the Ferguson years since 1986.

For my team, i've left out players such as Van der Sar, Pallister, Stam, Vidic, Evra, Beckham, Ince, Robson, Rooney, Yorke, Cole, Mc Clair.

This would be my TOP FERGUSON XI.............................

                                                      SCHMEICHEL

G.NEVILLE                    BRUCE                               FERDINAND                         IRWIN

RONALDO                    KEANE                               SCHOLES                            GIGGS

                          CANTONA                            VAN NISTELROOY.

GAA Discussion / NEW ROSCOMMON SENIOR MANAGER
April 20, 2008, 11:08:12 AM
The word on the grapevine is that Roscommon Under 21 manager, Michael Ryan, will take charge of the Ros Senior team for the upcoming championship.

He will be assisted by former player, Donal Casserly.

First of all it was John Maughan, then it was Co.Board Treasurer, Larry Brennan.

Now there is speculation www.stolensheep.tk that Assistant Treasurer, Seamus Nugent has resigned :o

Any of the Rossies on here have any idea what's going on ???

GAA Discussion / ARMAGH v ROSCOMMON (MARCH 16)
March 05, 2008, 11:16:16 AM
Who would ever have thought that this game could be labelled as a relegation dogfight, but that's exactly what it has now become.

Ros have only 1 point, but who  would have expected the Orchard County to only gather 2 points from games against Cavan, Westmeath and Monaghan.

Not much hope in Ros about getting anything from this game. Only taking 1 point from the 2 home games against Cork and Meath has put them under pressure, with only Cavan below them.

GAA Discussion / ROSCOMMON v CORK (MARCH 2)
February 20, 2008, 12:53:33 PM
Now that Cork's footballers have decided to concentrate on the on-field action, are there any theories out there about what type of performance we can expect from them against Roscommon in Kiltoom next Sunday week.

After all the publicity and controversy, are they going to hit the ground running, and play out of their skins, especially with a new manager and selectors to impress.

Or, is it possible, that due to the training, and match practice that has been missed in recent months, they could be sitting ducks for an ambush in Kiltoom????

Following the woeful display of Connacht Champions, Sligo, yesterday, i think it's fair to say that Connacht Football is now at it's lowest ebb for the last 12 years.

Fair play to Sligo for bridging the 32 year gap in winning this year's Connacht Title, but in my opinion, they are a very limited team. This begs the question.....what's gone wrong with Connacht Football???

Mayo are very much entering a transitional phase. They do have many fine individual players, but gelling them together as a team is going to be a big task for even John O'Mahony. A heavy defeat to Galway and a heavy beating in Derry suggests a huge job ahead.

Galway are in an even bigger state of decline. Who thought they would ever see the day that Galway would struggle to beat Leitrim, and then lose to Sligo in the same year??
Galway have shown that they are not as good as they looked against Mayo, and with many of their leading players on the point of retirement, it's fair to say that Galway are set for a major job of restructuring and transition.

Roscommon always flatter to deceive, and look in a mess at the moment. With a management who have failed to impress, and a team who continue to press the self destruct button in major games, it's hard to see where any improvement is going to come from.
In time, a handful or so, of last year's All Ireland winning minor team should emerge onto the senior team, but that doesn't bring any guarantee of success. It's hard to see where any improvement will come from in the short term.

Leitrim will always be restricted by a limited playing pool due to the small population of the county. There is no more passionate and devoted group of players anywhere than the Leitrim lads, and as they showed against Galway, they are capable of giving anyone a game on any given day.
But, in the greater scheme of things, it's hard to see where further improvement will come from.

Sligo are worthy Connacht Champions for 2007, but who can say when they will repeat this feat?? A lot of their players looked exceptionally mediocre yesterday. They are probably in a similar position to Leitrim population wise, give or take a few thousand. A lack of recent underage success suggests that there isn't exactly a steady stream of talent coming through, as evidenced yesterday by the need to introduce the likes of Gerry Mc Gowan when fresh legs were needed.

So, it all begs the question, where is Connacht football heading.?? For the first time in 12 or 13 years, when next year's All Ireland contenders are being discussed, it is almost certain that no team from Connacht will be seriously considered as being realistic contenders.

GAA Discussion / MAYO STAR HEADING TO OZ????
July 31, 2007, 01:14:05 PM
Heard today from a reliable source that rising Mayo Star, Pierce Hanley, has accepted a 2 year trial to play in Australia for Brisbane Lions.

Have any of the Mayo lads on here heard anything to verify or confirm this??

GAA Discussion / 2008 National Football League
April 09, 2007, 03:19:24 PM
Allowing for the fact that the minefield that is Division 2A hasn't yet concluded, can someone confirm how the 4 divisions for next year's league will shape up following the conclusion of the other league games yesterday.

Do any of ye give Roscommon a decent chance in the final, next Saturday, or are the red and green ribbons already on the trophy?

As Mayo have about 8 of last year's All Ireland winning team on board, and with home advantage, they must start as hot favourites.
Roscommon would have a young u-21 team, and finished yesterday's semi final win over Sligo with no fewer than 7 of last year's All Ireland Winning minors on the field. Most of the rest of yesterday's team have already forced their way onto the Roscommon senior team.

Will the John Maughan factor have any bearing on the proceedings, or is it just a sideshow for the media to hype up?

The Sligo lads on this site might have different views, but to me, Ros were more superior against Sligo than the 1-14 to 0-10 scoreline suggests.

Interesting game ahead, or Mayo to have too much class for a young Ros team??

Any views on who we will all be talking about later this year as the Surprise Team of 2007.???
