Why do people, when they hear some pre arranged noises made with bits of wood metal and string, want to stand up and start shaking their bits around the place, regardless of whether they have any bits that are worth seeing being shaken about.

People are odd creatures.

Newstalk threw it out as a text revenue catcher this morning.................but how would you define sport.

Is synchronised swimming, ice skating or gymnastics really sport............  darts, poker ?

In the absence of an official definition I reckon a sport is.............

Any competitive activity involving two or more participants, that is governed by a set of rules, is organised by a recognised governing body and whose outcome is determined by an objectively measurable scoring system.

For me that rules out, for example,  gymnastics since the outcome is determined by a panel of judges making subjective judgements. To me this is a performing art.

What say you ?

GAA Discussion / Are you part of the GAA ?
July 16, 2010, 03:34:43 PM
One thing that struck me in the fallout from last weeks Leinster final was the attitude of many posters towards the top level officialdom in the GAA. I am interested to know how posters see the relationship (if any) between GAA leadership and their own GAA activities.

New cricket club started in Carrick on Shannon,  not sure where they will find a decent ground, the rushes will stop a few fours I'd say.  Hope it takes off,  great game to play.

GAA Discussion / No End To The Micko Years
July 01, 2010, 05:12:57 PM
Mick O'Dwyer will not be retiring but has not confirmed he'll be staying with Wicklow.

What counties would benefit from a year or two of Micko bluffing.....I mean Micko magic.

I think maybe lads in Offaly need something to give them a kickstart,  but I think a Peter Fitzpatrick figur ewould be better.

GAA Discussion / Juvenile Membership Fees
June 08, 2010, 11:55:20 AM
Can anyone tell me what the juvenile membership fee is in their club. I have been shocked by the fees being asked by one club for juvenile membership and am just wondering what is the norm these days.

General discussion / Rugby Free to Air

Sorry if there is already a thread on this but I couldnt find it.

Given that rugby is a professional sport  ie a business, is the government acting illegally in trying to restrict the earning potential of the irfu.
Also since the irfu represents members who are citizens of the uk, does the government of the republic of ireland have any right to dictate how they conduct their business

Is there anyone out there who is involved with a club that amalgamates with a neighbouring parish at minor board level but retains a seperate senior club. I am just wondering how it works out in practice. My own club really struggle at underage level with numbers both players and adult mentors. I think an amalgamation at minor board level might be in the best interests of all.

Just listened to Dunphy bleating on about Reid's omission from the squad. How it was an abuse, bullying and an injustice.

What a load of bullshit.

I am no expert, but has it not been fairly obvious that what Trappatoni is going for is creativity/pace  out wide with Duff and McGeady and physical strength / work rate in the middle with Whelan / S Reid / Gibson.

Andy Reid is a decent footballer with a good passing left peg. But he doesnt have the pace or trickery to be effective out wide nor the physique or workrate to do a job in the middle.

It seems fairly obvious to me that Trappatoni does not pick him because he does not see Reid as a players that fits into the way he wants his team to play.

This persecution complex stuff is pure nonsense.

GAA Discussion / Connacht Final 1980

Can anyone name the Roscommon team that won the Connacht final in 1980.

I have an 11 year old daughter.
Previously, she could have had an immunisation that would have prevented cervical cancer in later life.
Now, because of health budget cuts, this immunisation will cost €600

I am assuming the notion of paying guys to play football  is being scrapped.
If not I'd like to know why ?

General discussion / Getting Googled
October 16, 2008, 02:21:02 PM
Anyone with experience of publishing a website and getting it indexed on Google ?
How long should it take ?
What can you do to speed up the process.

I've done all that google has asked,  verified the site and submitted a sitemap, which was fine. I've checked the stats on the site and it has been visited a few times by a google bot.
But a week later still nothing on google.  Does it take that long.

Any advice would be welcomed by a webmaster virgin.   :)

I have a bit of money to spend on training equipment and was wondering if anyone has used or knows anything about  thegaastore.com

Is it a reliable place to spend club money.

Thanks.

GAA Discussion / You can't coach intelligence
November 20, 2007, 10:49:48 AM
I have two nephews 11 and 13 years old.
Played football and hurling in school, no great shakes, but went along to training every week with the local club. Togged out for matches week in week out and never once got as much as 5 minutes on the field. The lads were getting fed up so their mother went to the team manager and reasonably, she was well aware that they were unlikely to be all ireland winning material, asked that they be given a chance to play in the matches.
Now our local supremo with all the GAA coaching qualifications in hand took the matter in hand and informed her, in front of the lads,  that " ah I'll give a run to the lads that are no good for five minutes in the next match, it's our last game anyway".

The two lads are now enjoying their rugby.

Now as I said , they were no great shakes, but who is to say they wouldn't be late developers and turn into useful club players. And even if they didn't, they could have ended up being good chairmen, secretaries or pro's. For sure, none of that will happen now.

It just goes to prove you can talk all you like about coaching courses and levels, but you can't put intelligence in a place it doesn't exist.

The only way I'd get to see them these days.

GAA Discussion / Modern training methods...
October 23, 2007, 10:13:56 PM
I was taking a leisurely stroll around The Mall in Longford at lunchtime today when my peaceful saunter was disrupted by the sight of a lad fully togged out doing laps of the park.
He was well into it, jogging 50 yards, then into a canter and a 30 yard dash before returning to a jog. It did my indigestion no good at all to look at his antics and me Tesco's roast beef wrap was nearly looking for an early exit.
But then this fella did something that brought me straight back the the mucky fields on frosty nights with the moon and the stars looking down on a group of gobshites (athletes) sloggong their guts out in pursuit of physical perfection.

He started running sideways.

From the time I was ten until I quit at 33 or 34 it was an obligatory part of training to run back and forwards across the pitch....  forward.............backways............and sideways.

Now in all my years playing I have to admit to running forward on occasions........  if I couldn't get a good grip on the full forward and was left with no choice.
I even remember running a few yards backwards to take a ball that every one thought was gone over me head and into the full forwards arms.

But never,  not once did I ever run sideways during the course of a match.  And I don't believe I ever saw anyone else ever running sideways either.  I can't think of any situation where running sideways would be any use for anything.  So why did we do it.

For any of you lads that still train....... or even tog out for training,  do ye still run sideways ?

Hurling Discussion / Offaly on the manager hunt again
August 08, 2007, 02:32:03 PM
John McIntyre has resigned, with  alleged designs on filling Babs' seat.

Who are the likely candidates for the Offaly job or will it make any difference.
Aidan Fogarty seems to have some backers but would anyone outside the county be interested in taking on division 2 hurling.

GAA Discussion / Robbie Kelleher
July 25, 2007, 11:38:12 AM
Often heard Robbie on the radio talking about the economy and stock market etc but never seen him until last night on the telly.

Jaysus if you ever needed reminding of the passage of time !!!!  Where has the black curly hair gone.

I suppose ye'll try to tell me Brian Mullins is fat and baldy too.
