GAA Discussion / Re: Jimmy's throwing hacks out!
September 24, 2012, 07:41:33 PM
Six pages of this thread lads and no one has even come up with a suggestion as to what the 'untruths' were?
Has anyone any idea? He might not have been happy with what Cassidy revealed but they're unlikely to have been untruths and even if they were what did Bogue do wrong in printing them? He was hardly not going to trust Cassidy. I've read the book too and there is nothing even mildly critical of McGuinness in it I recall. Don't think he even gets credited with the tactic of trash talking free takers and the likes.
Very strange choice of phrase and actions from McGuinness.

Good man thanks. That rings a bell alright.

Anyone have any trick that will allow me get tickets either further back in the lower decks or else on the upper decks?

Apologies if there's a thread on this already but does anyone know which rows are covered in the lower decks of the Hogan and Cusack. Weather is promising bad for the weekend and would rather buy tickets that are out of the rain especially as I am getting them early in the week. I am being offered row E in the Hogan (which I know is out in the open as only five rows from the front) and row K in the Cusack, which could be covered.
I remember taking note of this when at a game last year and thinking that it was when you hit the double letter rows AA, BB etc that you are covered but was wondering does anyone know for sure?

On another note I went to buy the 'football feast' package tickets, which I have bought the last couple of years, which is the two quarters days and two semis and is great value for 90 euro, but the hoors have them taken down after the draw at the weekend! :(

GAA Discussion / Re: Roscommon v Tyrone/Armagh

I've brought something like this up on another thread but I'd be almost certain the GAA will do two double headers on weekend of July 30/31 with this game and the three quarter finals taking place.
It's a pity Armagh and Wicklow drew because the four quarter finals on the one weekend is a great promotional tool for the GAA and it would be good to really have it set in stone as the day when the championship really kicks into gear.
Last year with Down beating Kerry, Dubs beating Tyrone, Cork v Roscommon and Meath v Kildare was a brilliant two days of sporting action.
They should probably allow one free weekend in coming years to allow for replays in previous rounds so 'quarter final weekend' can be set in stone.

Thanks for the replies lads.

So it looks like Roscommon v Armagh/Tyrone and three of the quarter finals that Saturday and Sunday 30/31 July.

Is there any rules on who can meet who in the quarters with regard to meeting already in provincial finals or the like?

Football Feast ticket looks great value again especially if you live in Dublin, although you could miss out on a big game like Dublin v Tyrone as they'd have to fix that as a stand alone the following weekend if they were drawn together (ie if Tyrone beat Armagh and are then drawn to play the Dubs).

When are these due to be played? Hardly have all four on the bank holiday weekend as has become traditional due to Armagh v Wicklow draw or am i wrong? Also have we any idea of who might play who or is it a pure open draw?

Finally does anyone know have the gaa released details of the 'football feast' etc tickets that allowed you buy ticks to two quarters and two semis for what was a good price last year?

In response to that article which says the RTE boys are totally out of touch with the real GAA men who would prefer to see Brian Carty as main commentator, a quick poll would be enlightening in the likes of here and anfearrua. More especially here though as posters seem more level headed.
I'd say the results would show it's actually Harte etc who are out of touch as the vast majority of people I know don't like Carty as a commentator to put it mildly. In saying all this I've met the man, and he is a gentleman albeit one who is nicknamed 'Fr Brian' by those who know him.

Could someone set up a poll? Do you agree that Brian Carty should be RTE's main radio GAA commentator? yes or no.
Not 'do you agree with Mickey Harte's stance either as people seem fairly unanimous on that.

GAA Discussion / Re: All-Ireland MFC 2010

Heading to the match on Sunday and was thinking of heading in early for the Mayo v Tyrone game. I've been told the winner of this one will be favourite for the All ireland with Tyrone hot favourites to win it so probably worth a look.
Saw clips of yer man O'Connor for Mayo against Offaly and he looked a class act, the sort of straightforward scoring forward with a bit of size the seniors haven't had for a while.
How many of the Mayo lads played in the last two minor finals or even just last years?
Saw the highlights of the Tyrone game too and no one really stood out although they did seem to have a corner forward with the same kicking style as Mulligan who looked handy enough.
Who are the lads on either team I should look out for as always helps enjoyment of a game if you've some sort of back story about the players playing?

Row RR for me.  No need for the all-weather gear.

I got row RR too, great stuff. These package tickets are great value in fairness to the GAA. Sure even if you can't  make one of the days you'll surely sell them on to a friend.
How do you print them out?

Bought myself two 'football feast' tickets there for 99 euro each. They get me into both quarter days and both semi days for the football. Seems very good value to me. Was going to go to both quarters anyway which would have been 77 euro after ticketmaster charges so 23 more for tickets to the two semi finals sounds like a great deal.
Tickets are in section 308 lower cusack but doesn't give rows just seat numbers. That could be the catch I suppose. Anyone have any idea whereabouts these package seats are?

Was having a look at these yesterday but couldn't drum up enough interest for this weekend what with it being a bank holiday. It does give the row I think, it was on "S" yesterday...

Saw the 's' at one stage before the seat numbers alright but there was no mention of it as I went further in the process and none when I got the confirmation email or anything. Think it might have just stood for 'seats' or something.
Hope it's not anyway as it's only the double letters like SS or PP etc that are covered in case of rain isn't it?

GAA legends who have won nothing - someone like Brendan Hayden (Carlow), Leo Turley (Laois) are two that spring to mind - any suggestions on that front - I'd hunt down anybody if they were mentioned. Lots of the initial lads that spring to mind have all one loads!

I'd get Colm Parkinson. Maybe you know him and don't like him as a Laois man but he'd have a good knowledge of the current scene as a recently retired player, is still playing club in Dublin and seems a bit of craic who's not afraid to speak his mind as evidenced by his stint on Newstalk last Saturday! Would be something different anyway..

Forgetting about what he achieved with the Kingdom for a second,
He Improved Kildare-winning a leinster title
He Improved Laois-winning a Leinster title
He Improved Wicklow from Division 4 also rans into a team which have beaten Kildare,Down,Cavan and Fermanagh in championship football,All 4 teams would have slaughtered Wicklow 5 years previously.
What exactly is he bluffing about?

2 Leinster titles.

Parkinson is a clown. One of those lads that wouldn't burst their gut for Micko so were deemed surplus to requirements.

so why has mickos career being one long downward spiral?. hes was alway putting it out he'd like to manage a mayo or dublin and take them that final step but in stead hes mow competing with perennial failures tommy carr and luke dempsey for jobs

Decent point but I'd say it's because he follows the dollars. No coincidence that Sean Mulryan was a big backer of Wicklow with his sons on underage teams.

Have to say I heard Parkinson on Newstalk and he came across very well as a lad who doesn't take himself too seriously and is refreshingly laid back and honest. Something that's all too rare these days, or any days, in GAA players.

Can't see how anyone would have much argument with what he said about Micko. He acknowledged that he provides a boost to a county and will get all the best players so its hardly as if he completely slated him. He was just arguing against this shite, put forward by Ger Gilroy, that Micko has some great tricks up his sleeve or anything. The 'bluff' he was calling on Micko is the fact that he doesn't have any magic formula, just a legendary name. I'd say his training methods etc wouldn't be the greatest and I can well believe how he wouldn't have great knowledge of his panel. I doubt he's a regular attender at Wicklow club league games.

His protege Paidi is the from the exact same school of management if you're to believe any of the Westmeath players I've talked to.

That's not to completely run them down either, far from it, they are what they are and it seems to work, for a while anyway.

GAA Discussion / GAA stars in politics
May 19, 2010, 06:32:58 PM
A mate of mine is doing politics in college and they were doing some study on celebrities in Irish politics and he brought up the topic in the pub the other night. we were tryin to think of GAA players who went for election be they local or national.
The main ones were obvious successful ones like John O'Mahony, Jimmy Deenihan, Jack Lynch etc and a couple of failures that came up like Graham Geraghty (what the fcuk were FG thinking of!) and John O'Leary the ex Dublin goalkeeper.

Any more spring to mind lads??

GAA Discussion / GAA championship Stats website

I remember seeing a link to a website here before that gives counties championship histories eg head to heads against each county and stuff like that. Anyone know the name of it?
