Title: 2021 Masters
Post by: Boycey on April 05, 2021, 06:46:25 PM
Only a few months since I posted the previous one of these.

Here's the obligatory guide to who can and can't win.

I'll resign from the board if McIlroy wins.

Itís probably the easiest major to predict in terms of rarely producing a real long shot as winner.

I think Spieth is the man to beat this week, but most of the usual suspects will contend like Johnson, Thomas, Rahm and Dechambeau. Hopefully McIlroy and Lowry will contend and whilst the course should suit McIlroy and he has the ability, doubts still persist on his mental strength if he gets into contention.

Very interesting analysis, will keep an eye on it this week.

It's not this year especially with the struggles he's going through. It would be absolutely ridiculous if he was able to pull off a win at Augusta the way he's been playing.

The bookies are taking the absolute piss with his odds he's nowhere near that he should be 50/1 minimum!

Zac Johnson? Immelmann? Angel Carbera won it at 100-1 odds.

Just had a look at the roll of honour- Danny f**king Willet

I kinda know what you mean in terms of not producing a Cink or a Darren Clarke but surprises do happen at Augusta.

6 top 10s in 12 appearances, with all of them coming in the last 7 appearances. Of course he should have won one, but those results are probably as good as, if not better than, anyone else. Would suggest he will be in contention, although current form isn't great. Although that will likely be the time he wins it, when nobody thinks he can and the pressure is off

Good man. I use this every year. It's fairly decent in terms of returns from what I recall.

Rory's a great fella for pulling out top 10 finishes without ever really being in contention. Lots of nice low Sunday numbers after shooting a 76 on Friday or Saturday.

Would 6 top ten finishes not indicate a modicum of ability to play round the place if nothing else FFS.... The gymnastics people perform to do down McIlroy never ceases to amaze me. He's a contender at every major he tees up at.

Oh I'm no golf expert.

You don't really need to be an expert to tell that McIlroy is a busted flush who made some hay in a post Tiger weak era and then slid off to oblivion when a more talented generation emerged.

Is that 2019 pga player of the year McIlroy? Hardly a busted flush. For once you are right, you are no expert; Rorys peers seem to think differently too.

People are now probably only appreciating what Tiger did during his era.

No doubt it has got even more competitive since then, when you look at the likes of Speith who looked like he was going to dominate and has faded only to return.

It will be tough for McIlroy to reach those heights again but I wouldnt be writing him off just yet.

The market will decide his price so why should he be 50/1. He is a 4 time major winner with a good record around Augusta, there are more fancied players this week but McIlroy still has the raw ability to catch fire in any given week but his biggest enemy is his own mindset.

Fans would be great around the 12th and 16th especially

Can I just say watched the press previews yesterday DJ might come across as a little reserved etc but his clubs do the talking. On the other hand Rory is once again spouting some bollocks, round Tigers hanging out etc.

He do well to get on the green stuff and up his game. Probably too early in what hes now changing in his game to make a decent impression this week. Also as I have said before on the Main golf page, hes far to inconsistent over 4 rounds currently.

Shane Lowry short game again struggling at the minute and cant have that around Augusta.

For anyone looking a very outside bet the Scottish fella, lefty, Robert Mac Intyre Swings it beautifully. I think hes a rookie round this course so maybe far too early but how knows, top 10 finish bet maybe.

Best golf tournament by far. Looking forward to it.

The Masters always throws up a few curve balls among the favourites. No one seen Sergio or Tiger coming in recent times.

Would like to see Rory have a good start and put himself in contention. Golf standard so high nowadays, I doubt we see an era of dominance like Tiger had. Few years back it was Speith, Rory, Brooks and others all set for a prolonged spell but they havenít been near Tigers level.

Never minded the Masters group compared to some of the other tournaments in the US. They always seemed more fair and kinda constrained.

Lowry playing well in the first few holes, missed a 4ft put on the 2nd for a birdie, then made one from the same distance on the 3rd.
A green jacket would look well on Offaly!

The Masters official website is very good, can see every shot that each player makes on all the holes. Short 15sec clips.

Rory's a great fella for pulling out top 10 finishes without ever really being in contention. Lots of nice low Sunday numbers after shooting a 76 on Friday or Saturday.

The 76 was on Thursday this time. He'll shoot sub-70 tomorrow to make the cut, and probably have the round of the weekend on Sunday to finish in the top 10 again. All while never being in contention.

Forget about Rory this weekend his game is in no shape at the minute this oneís gone.

Really enjoyable evenings viewing Spieth is great watching and Lowry has been excellent!!

Rose just seemed to find something after not playing well for a few years. Hard to see him hanging on given his form but means a few lads will have to go after it tomorrow to catch him.

Big fan of Speith. Golf I can relate to. Trees, 3 putts, wayward driving yet he posts a score where as I post 90 something but anyway.

Lowry going well and he's a great guy. His short game is brilliant even though he chipped into the water on 15 (really tough chip BTW) he dropped another and nearly holed it.

Rose is a sponsors wet dream. Everything is so managed. Every word carefully spoken. For that I don't real feel we get the authentic version of him. But he played some stellar golf yesterday.

McIlroy will post a 63 today.

Title: Re: 2021 Masters

Rose is in a very strong position and as a former major winner he has the mental strength to carry this through if he can maintain yesterdays form. However it is a tough task to lead from pillar to post in a major so if he can achieve this then it will be no mean feat. Spieth could be the danger for him, if his putter gets hot he is a birdie machine.

McIlroy not looking good, if he makes the cut and finishes top 20 then that is about as much as he looks capable of achieving in his current form. Lowry played very well yesterday, would be great to see him stay in contention going into the final day. He is coming in under the radar and can play without a great deal of pressure as a top 10 finish would be deemed a good performance by him given that he has never contended at Augusta.

The cut is top 50 and ties. Currently projected at +3 but it could go out. McIlroy will probably need a sub par round to make sure. If he finishes the day at level or +1 he could still be in the mix. Rose struggling on first 9 and back to -4.

You would think McIlroy is the only player playing on this thread, some probably think he still has a chance

McIlroy's second at 10 would embarrass a club golfer ffs

Yes it's all very softly softly these days. All containment rather than prevention. Makes it all low risk and more craic for the rioters if they're not getting a rubber bullet in the temple (obviously bounced off the road as the peelers would never have taken a direct shot  :-\)

Leader board nice and compact with a few big hitters still up around the top. Should hopefully make for an exciting 2 days.

Fancy Spieth to take it home from here.

At least we know whatís going on with McIlroy but DJ?? Horrible performance from a reigning champion and world number 1.

That was fairly shocking from him heís been very poor this year even his win in the Middle East was more others not playing well than him winning it. Will be interesting to see how the rest of his season goes.
