Title: Things I do not understand
Post by: Orior on May 29, 2019, 11:30:52 AM
1) How does the wind rushing over and under wings make a plane fly?

2) How does a mobile phone still work perfectly when on the move?

3) How does the sun's light travel though the vacuum of space?

Quick Sports

1) Going to any game seemingly to criticise the players / even worse, just one particular player
2) That clown who gets half cut at rugby and must break the silence on the kicks for attention
3) People complaining about smaller counties playing defensive football like they should put their lives on hold to train for months on end to get hammered for the sake of 'entertainment'.

Quick General

1) People nipping out dangerously in front of you on road then not bothering to speed up
2) People complaining about NI Politics when the whole life blood of the two main parties is conflict and blaming the other side
3) Religion in general for me, just a bit strange - fair play to anyone who truly believes, not knocking them in any way-just find the whole concept odd.

Leave the thread.  Your not understanding some means that it's things that  you happy they work.  Doesn't trouble you greatly but some peaky child wants an explanation  (why is the sky blue)  and doesn't yet have your maturity.

1) How does the wind rushing over and under wings make a plane fly?

2) How does a mobile phone still work perfectly when on the move?

3) How does the sun's light travel though the vacuum of space?

1. It creates a pressure differential in the air which it attempts to equalise

2. Radio waves travel in all directions, same way as a walkie talkie or car radio

3. Light does not need air to travel on

To take up Ziggys point I used to wonder on the following 2 questions:

1. If the earth is spinning so fast and gravity is so weak then why are we not thrown off the earth into space especially people living on the equator

2. If space is a vacuum why arent we sucked out into it?

A quick google tho sorts these things out..... the answers are way more interesting than the questions BTW

However you discover that google has got to such answers to the the following ( and a good few other)

Why does a major chord sound happy and a minor chord sound sad? IN fact why do we like music at all?

How do I know I experience the same things as anyone else. How do I know that green means the same thing to me as to ziggy or orior?

What the feck is time?

I think a major chord sounds sad, which answers your second question.

Gravity isn't weak. It's a lot stronger than any negligible centrifugal force from the Earth's rotation. That only comes into play with spac launches which are more efficient at lower latitudes.

2. If space is a vacuum why arent we sucked out into it?

Gravity holds us and a layer of air against the surface of Earth.

Yeah the idea was you would google these and discover for yourself unfortunately you seems to have missed the interesting bits

That is, the Earth actually spins really slow....(and btw gravity is weak)

and...

that a vaccum only "sucks" things because of the air pressure around it

Proclaiming your belief in something alongside those of the same belief repeatedly is logical enough especially if you feel enriched from doing so.

But returning again and again to a subject to publically proclaim your disbelief in it to who ever reads/hears it is utterly perplexing.

They play in the big competitions that people are interested in. When your local team plays in a Mickey Mouse competition that nobody takes any interest in, you tend to choose a team in a competition that people want to talk about and eventually you support them like a die hard fan from that city. Meanwhile, your local team dies a slow death, almost without you knowing it..or caring at that stage.

Why do Irish people support certain English soccer teams? Why do people who are not from Manchester support United?

Why do all the good Irish soccer players play for English teams?

The emergence of TV brought exposure of all these clubs. Also many people emigrated to England down through the decades and were exposed to the foreign code.

I think you have to be a bit thick not to know the answer to this.

Loads of Irish support NFL teams in the US, and nobody ever questions that. Yet, when Ireland had American football teams, they’d get a handful of supporters, the Irish Patriots, etc fans didn’t give a flying fook about local teams and they’ve probably all gone belly up.

Israel, getting away with what it gets away with

Cos all the Western establishments and media have made a deliberate decision not to bring attention to Israel's genocidal crimes.  Shameful.

Why though? Is there some big Jewish conspiracy? How can one country be allowed to continue in such a way with minimal sanctions? Why can’t stuff like this be questioned without being “anti-Semitic?”

If you have America's backing you can get away with anything.

America's system of government can be bought for cash.

If you have lots of cash you can buy enough congressmen to get what you want.

The pro-Israel lobby is well funded.

Ergo, Israel literally gets away with murder.

Since when? Are you serious?  I remember following the NFL when I was in primary school which was 30 years ago. I vividly remember the Bears team in 1985-86 that beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. I remember playing ad naseum the game on the C64 that was based on that final. Jim McMahon, Walter Payton and William ‘the Fridge’ Perry were my favourites. NFL has been huge in Ireland and my brother actually played on one of the teams that was set up in Dublin in the mid 90’s. No one questions this nor the following of the NBA. Why should people not follow a team in England, or Scotland, or Italy or Spain?

I know loads of people who support NFL teams. I know more of these people than anyone who supports a rugby team or a cricket team.

Has to be a manifestation of a sense of inferiority / self-loathing given that the poorest in society generally have them?

Yea. Hard to know why. I can't get either of them but if I could I don't think I would bother tbh.

I used to play in the Irish AF League. There’s actually more teams now then ever, about 30. When I started playing in 2004 there were only 6 teams.

https://www.americanfootball.ie

It’s a shame they’ve come up with generic American team names and logos completely ignoring local history and culture. While I enjoyed it, it was a bit annoying being around a load of south side Dubliners acting very American. That and the reluctance to speed the way the game was played up a bit made match days tediously long and harder to enjoy.
