Have to admit to knowing absolutely nothing about this age group. What are the chances of a decent run in Leinster, does anyone know?
As an aside, that's a famous surname at number 4. Is he anything to Pat Critchley?

He's a nephew.

They got a pretty good draw and there are some very good Footballers on that team so I'd be optimistic we can get out of group at least

Carlow will be kicking themselves, they butchered a few goal chances

They also seemed a good bit fitter than our lads

We were poor enough tonight, very lucky to get out with a draw. Some good footballers but not very good team players. The forwards in particular found it hard to do the simple things like putting a string of passes together and more often than not the final pass was depressingly poor.

As has been said Carlow were way fitter than us and far cleverer but poor finishing from them kept us in it and we snuck an undeserved draw in the end. Hopefully we'll improve as we go on because if we don't we wont be involved in the business end later on. Very disappointing display...

Is it too much to expect that we should be doing better at this level?

When in the lead up to this match the team manager suggests that next year's team will be better prepared, you know you are in trouble!

It has been said that we did not look fit last night. That is unacceptable.

Next years team will be better prepeared ? why wasnt this team prepared properly? He has had two years now. I think we should be doing better- its hardly a great advertisment for te future struggling with Carlow two years running. On the other side you have Dublin and Meath scoring 4-10 to 2-10 each, they be hard bet along with Kildare

Yet again lets all go with the negatives first. Did they play well no, could they play better yes.

They could have been gone at half time with Carlow missing a few opportunities to score a couple of goals and put the game beyond us. They seemed very nervous which is understandable as they are under 17 and some only 16 years of age. They played away from home on a narrow pitch,(the same for both teams I know) but its still home advantage to Carlow.

The ref was pretty poor towards Laois and gave them some very soft frees which led to scores. Certainly in the build up in the friendly matches they played better so possibly its first match nerves. They have also lost a couple of big players through Injury. It takes a lot to come back from 3 points down with 5 minutes left but I don't see that in any threads above.

Can you also please stop comparing Laois to Dublin, Kildare and Meath, Population numbers and player participation is completely different. This comparison may have been relevant a number of years ago. Its so negative bemoaning the gulf between the counties. You have to set realistic targets which I am sure the management and the County board are doing.

Its interesting that people can suggest a lack of fitness . The squad have been involved in the preparation since last September/October and finished Stronger than Carlow with the last three points. It seems to be the default of posters. Knockbeg college have done well recently so those lads would also be well drilled fit and well prepared. Some said last year that the team seemed a bit burnout for the campaign so again no one has all the answers.

Success would be getting out of the group and possibly a semi-final berth and with a bit of momentum who knows. The next match is the biggie and with home advantage and some good  support this may give them an extra 10%  The naysayers and serial moaners can stand in the stands with hurls and do the usual.

Just to be clear I wasnt being negative- suggesting the team could do better is not a negative, its a positive. Also dont accept you saying stop comparing to Dublin, Meath, Kildare if youre happy with always being the middle of the road fair enough but I wouldnt be on that frame of mind at all. Hopefully over the next few years we will be up at that level and other teams can start comparing against Laois. We have some good development squad teams coming hopefully.

I note your comments, the issue is in a lot of cases you cant legislate for injuries and the squad had two significant  injures prior to last night
and possibly another injured player from last nights game. The Laois squad would not have the depth of players that are available in other larger counties. Dublin could have a full squad of 17 year olds up to 60-80 in number prior to any championship run and can slot players in and rotate when required.

I would be delighted to see any County copying Laois success in the future if that was to happen and understand that great work is happening in some other underage teams but this could be a few years away and some of the other underage teams will battle against other sports like soccer and rugby when their child is more developed physically. This is not as relevant in Dublin where a lot of players choose to play football in isolation as opposed to a number of sports. I have seen a number of clubs having fantastic juvenile teams and then struggle at older age groups with player burnout fatigue and players just giving up or chosing to play another sport .

Maybe credit should be given to Carlow as they should have won the game and they have a few exceptional players, we will see after the remaining matches to accurately reflect on the state of Laois football. I still prefer a glass to be half full.

I feel some posters are being too hard on Donnacha. After last year he identified a need to have the the under 16s train alongside minor panel to give them extra experience and become familiar with the set-up and hopefully raise their standards. This year he has implemented that change. It will take until next year for those U16s to come through to minor and hopefully the experience of this year will prove beneficial.

I do accept that the performance during the week was poor. Perhaps after Knockbeg's successful run and the feel good mentality that has seeped back into Laois football that the Laois team on the night didn't show Carlow the respect they deserved and took victory for granted. Carlow could have been out of sight at half time. Credit though to the players for showing resilience in the closing stages of the game to battle back for a draw. Good lesson to learn early in the group stages. Hopefully they can kick on in their next two games. By looks of it there will be little to separate the four teams.

Last year I thought the big difference between Laois and Meath was the speed and size of the Meath team compared Laois, they were on a different level. What is the team like this year? Have they natural speed in the team and a big spine?

Was at u14s Laois split their teams  evenly and Offaly stacked theirs.  both Laois teams won one match easily and got beaten in the other. Some nice talent there with a chap from Camross and a lad from Rosenallis being two good performers. Laois had about 35 players while Offaly had near 50 and towards the end the Laois chaps were bet after 80 mins of football. Not a bad bunch of players

Was at training last night, one of the lads sons is on the panel, said they were excellent against Cavan bar the first 10 minutes or so where they were on top but missed alot of goal chances. 6-11 to 2-9 he had it. Cavan were handy enough in the first half but the match ups were got right in the second half and Laois kicked on. Said new management took it over this year and seems to be going well. They have Offaly next.

Good win for the 16s, its a hard year when you miss your top players to Minor. Its good for that group to keep playing well for when they turn next year.

Very balanced team. No real stars. Full back Greene from Emo did well I suppose but the two corner backs struggled.

Based on current evidence this team probably won't compete with the likes of Meath and Kildare. You've got to admire their perseverance though, that's twice they've dug out results now. And it's twice that Brian Whelan kicked the decisive score.

Laois Today named Sean Greene as their motm and it's hard to argue with that. Hopefully Donnacha will have words and tell them to make it easier on themselves next time out. The heart can only take so much.

Went and watched the 15s today against Offaly. They were very good I thought. Very controlled and worked extremely hard. Offaly started ok but Laois got to grips early enough. 4-12 to 2-4 was the final score, one of the people there said Offaly bet us last year by a couple of points so fair play to them. Hopefully its the sign of a decent crop coming through. 14s were playing Wexford and 16s Roscommon I seen on twitter.

Saw 14s in WX even enough in two matches with one team losing and one winning. Second matches followed suit winning one and losing one but both were big margins. Speaking to management they reckon there’s possibly 8 or ten chaps not in due to Kennedy cup soccer and clubs not sending lads in. Still there looks to be the nucleus of a very nice team there and a nice bit of size to them too

This is a good team but some of the execution of the handpass was horrible, balls not finding their man, going over their heads and even passing straight to the Kildare players at vital times in the game. Burke made a difference when he came on but a bit of complacency in defence by him saw him being robbed of the ball by a Kildare forward who was through on goal and was hand tripped by Burke who was trying to make up for his mistake. He was unfortunate but the ref had no choice but to black card him.

It was one of the only decisions this ref got right against Laois as most of his other decisions against us were baffling to say the least. Our kickouts were killing us in the early stages but once we got that sorted we scored a great goal and took over for long periods after that. We missed another glorious chance of a goal a while after and had we scored it we would have been well on the way there. Our passing and decision making let us down badly but lets hope we learn from it and come back stronger next year..

He has given it two years and two Leinster Semi Finals albeit by draw but still he can't of been that bad. I doubt there be a room full of lads looking for the job to be fair and I presume Billy might go from 20s at the end of this season aswell after giving two years

You're very quick to have a go at lads who put huge levels of time and commitment into these roles. Why don't you apply for the job yourself?

Barring a disaster, I'd give Billy another year or two with the 20's.

I would aswell for sure- Two years tends to be the shift is all I was saying. If he stays, I think that would be a positive bar a tanking tomorrow

A lot hangs on tomorrow night's result. Lose and he probably should go. A win opens up any possibility for him. His hands were completely tied by his late appointment last year but he doesn't have that fall back this year.
It's a strong looking under 20 team. I think we can win this game.
