Does any man know what this sport is that Tommy Lyons was referring to on the Sunday Game last nite? When Pat asked him had he unfinished business with Dublin and would he go back to managing them he said "Ah come on Pat, you're arse-boxing now!" ::)
Given the anatomical part mentioned it must be a euphemism for "talking shite"
Arse Boxing is a euphemism for those bouts of 'handbags' where lads go hopping off one another without actually throwing punches. Literally hitting each other with their arses. Lyons is the first I heard using the term, a while ago while commentating on a mini-schemozzle, but he seems to have adapted it's usage now.

myself and the missus were sitting watching the show last night when Tommy came out with this statement, and the two of us looked at each other and had one of those 'Did he just say what I think he said' moments!! this thread just cleared that up for me!!
It's another name for fisting which looks quite nasty but lots of people enjoy it a lot.

Maybe Tommy see's arse-boxing as a bit of an annoyance & was pointing out that Spillane was just being an annoyance by asking the question, or indeed that he was just trying to shaft him....

AFAIR he was asked about O'Dwyers comment where O'Dwyer said that the GAA should make a contribution to the holiday funds of Kildare and Dublin after they filled Croke park and Lyons responded with something like 'Well the GAA should make a decision either way and stop all this arseboxing around...'
AZ you really should know better than to contradict Fearon on his specialist subject.
Tommy first used the phrase to describe the tonyspeak in the build up to games.

I think it comes from the same thing heffo. Arseboxing, hitting without hitting, talking without being serious, etc. I know I saw him saying that 'that was just a bit of arseboxing' after one of those pushing and shoving matches.
I think there's a fair chance we'll see a new face next year on the Sunday game - surely it's time for Lyons to be sidelined or arseboxed out of the studio ? ;)
