Something Heganboy said on the NYC thread about there being 2000 places that sell drink in Manhattan got me thinking.
How many bars is that per head of population? There is roughly...what? 2 million people in Manhattan? That means a bar for every 1,000 people
Apparently there are 54 bars in Dingle....assuming the holiday population of Dingle is about 3,000...thats about 1 bar for every 55 people.
Can any other town/city/village beat that for service????
Not sure what the population of Clonmel is, but theres a brave few pubs there too
i heard that county monaghan had the highest pubs per head ratio of an irish county.
Absolutely has to be Kilnaleck In Caaaaaavan, never seen anything like it for pubs :o
Apparently Draperstown, Co. Derry has the highest number of pubs per head in the world!! Not jokin btw, apparently it was in the Guinness Book of Records in 2003 I think.
Manys a post mortem on a match has been carried out there.
Carrickmacross always seemed to have a fair share of watering holes.
aye draperstown was in the guiness book of records surely, not sure of any stats to be honest but there's a fair few ale houses around and about...its great!
somewhere in monaghan alright - might be ballybay, every second building in the village is a pub....near sure its ballybay
Gortin in the Sperrins in Tyrone.
I'm not sure how many are still functioning, but in the late 80s, Arva (Co. Cavan) had a population of ca. 300 and 17 pubs, which I make as approximately one for every seventeen people. No overcrowding there. ;)
I think Castleblayney, Carrickmacross and Ballybay are all in the top 10 in Ireland

Keady, Co.Armagh....
Some may well pose as pubs though!!! ;)
We used to play a game over pints in Drogheda - can you go from point A (on the North side) to point B (on The Far Side - i.e. across the river) without passing a pub? No swimming or boating allowed. Couldn't be done.
Yes, yes - simpler times, when all we had for entertainment was each other. And none of us was very entertaining.
hilltown co down. bound to be some sort of record there. think theres one shop, one chippy, a chinese, an electric shop and then about 12 pubs.
Of course the reason these small town have so many licences is because of the welcome they gave to her/his Majesties soldier when the cam through town to exvict the poor country people. every house that put up the redcoats got a license to sell alcohol and of couse its assumes the women of the house would give full hospitality.
why is it no suprise the counties that are emerging
There are 20 Pubs in one side of Lurgan, all there is in Lurgan are Pubs, Bookies, Chippies and solicitors...... ;D

There are 21 pubs/clubs in the Catholic side of Lurgan and probably 3-4 pubs on the Protestant side of the town, what does that tell you. anyone who knows Lurgan town (an average size town in Co Armagh) will know that the town has an imaginary border halfway through the town with the Fenian's on one side and the prods on the other
westport, theres some record there for westport havng a wild amount of pubs. no way you could get round them all in one night. you'd be blizted

Have a similar one in Lurgan by working our a route taking you from Fr Joes in Carnegie St to the Clans in Francis St by only taking left turns. Can be done.

I have actually tried with a few friends to do the pub crawl with all them...Thats great craic i'm telling you.
It would have to be lovely Clones....seems to have a pub at every second door!
Camlough and Bessbrook must be pretty high on the most and least per person lists.

Bit like Dungannon if you drew a big line down Scotch Street. Because of the Penal Laws pubs and undertakers were two of the few trades Catholics could go into, so that might have something to do with it.
My vote? Ennistymon in Co Clare was memorable

Well there are five bridges, not including the viaduct. But there were only three back then. But you're right - finding a bridge without passing a pub was a problem. Difficulties in the streets away from the river were often overcome by going through people's houses and the like.
In Lurgan you have a fair number of pubs, and they have possibly the worst nightclub in Ireland in the Ashburn. There is some number of pubs in Strabane aswell, close to 30 odd.
theres a brave few pubs in crossmaglen
Ballinamore, Co Leitrim. 28 pubs in the main street of this sráidbhaile.
Milltown Malbay, Co Clare must be in with a shout.
I dunno about most pubs per head, but I know a few places in the running for most heads per pub.
Arrah jaysis that gap thing is getting worse. I see FAM has it as well.
[Edit] Wait a minute - it's the Avatar! That makes sense. OK ... carry on ...
Parliament Street in Kilkenny City has something like 15 pubs side by side all the way down the street i think that it is some sort of record to have so many pubs side by side..
I think overall Kilkenny City has 60+ pubs
The village i come from has 7 and its only a tiny wee place

In Ballybay, off the top of my head, 16 pubs and the Hotel, makes 17.

You're right, it is jammed and makes a fortune. But it is still, after refurbishment, a hole. Be there probably once a weekend as there is no alternative. The carpet floor is a joke.
