Cassidy handed captain's armband
Jan 08, 2008

Monday, January 7th.

Donegal have opted to give Kevin Cassidy the captain's armband for the 2008 season.

The former All-Star was a key man for his club, Gaoth Dobhair, as they impressed on their way to winning the Donegal Senior Football County title.

The rampaging midfielder has now be given the responsibilty of leading The Tir Conaill Men as they aim to defend their NFL crown and challenge for the Sam Maguire trophy.

Manager Brian McIver had intended to announce the appointment before now, but is happy to confirm that Cassidy will be his man on the pitch to pass on his instructions.

"My plan was to make the announcement at the game with UUJ, but Kevin wasn't available," said McIver.

"I can confirm that Kevin will be the captain for this year."

What is the general opinion on the board re: Cass?
I think he will make a good captain as long as he controls his temper!

I think it's a bit of a risky move. Didn't he fall out with Donegal a couple of times, headed to America and stuff? Or am I mixing him up with someone else.

No harm to have a bit of a firebrand on the pitch, as long as he stays on it, but if he is a bit of a maverick off the field, he may end up undermining the other players' commitment.

If Kevin Cassidy is handed a "captain's armband" will Donegal be the first county to follow soccer in this respect.   Surely we don't have to copy everything from English soccer.  I have never seen a captain of a hurling or football team wear a "captain's armband" and don't see any need for one.

I think they should make our captains look like real captains:

I have never seen a hurler or footballer wearing a "captain's armband".  The real point is that it is lazy journalism to use soccer terms when writing about Football or Hurling.  Would that journalist refer to the time of the "throw in" when writing about soccer or rugby?.  I don't think so.

He's arguably our best player and one of the most influential (although I think he's far more use to the team in the half-back line). I think its a good move, especially if he's got his youthful transgressions out of his system.

Last year's captain, Neil Gallagher, tends to drift out of games a bit, whereas Cas is always in the thick of things.

I would trust Mc Ivor's instincts and this could be the making of Cassidy.
