Title: Univeristy season 2007/08
Post by: SuperHans on September 21, 2007, 03:27:13 PM
Well the semester starts next week altho theres plenty of noisy students about already. Just wondering which of the brightest new talent has gone to which uni and who has left. Think i read James Kielt is going to Queens

Surely Dan McCartan, K McGourty and G okane have left last years sigerson champions QUB. Likewise the poly have bound to lost P Donnelly, F Moriarty and P Mooney or are they all doing Jim McGuinesses.

Speaking of Jim McGuinness i believe he is in the frame for the Donegal job! Can anyone confirm that? Whats his history since he stopped playing?

Not sure about Dan but im pretty sure Kevin and Gerard have left.  Gerard is the same age I am and he was only there 4 years (I'm going into my 5 th year as a Queens student), and Kevin was VPCS of the union for three years after his degree thats how he got to play.  Both will be missed as they were very good in the final last year

mc guinness is in the frame along with mc ivor, charlie mulgrew and donal reid.. mc guinness has a good enough pedigree having managed glenties to the club championship in 2005 he is sytill inexperienced in terms of county management... he is supposed to be a very good coach and would be up to date with the leatest sports science etc.. he was doing the finn harps fitness training during their pre season..

Its just they had the makings of a good team last year and they still have a lot of their players unlike QUB who are losing the core of their team.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still be rooting for QUB!

Plus a poster on here with a German name  told me to back them!!!!

Jordanstown are supposed to have a great side this year ( but then come to think of it , they always have a great side ) but always seem to flop - too many individuals ?

Poly have a right team this year, a couple of additions to be confirmed plus a good core of last years side who just missed out. Pete Donnelly is only in final year so he will play again this year. Surely the Queen will find a computers course for the boul Mcgourty, maybe he could learn how to hide his e-mail address on the gaaboard?! Did Dan MC ever finish his? Did he even go! Should be another cracking Sigerson.

Donnelly had some game for Coalisland today in the semi final - he took one particular catch in the second half which was worth the admission price alone !

Great result for Queens tonight at Pairc Esler in the Quarter Finals of the Ryan Cup. They beat UCD 2-11 to 0-12. Paul McComiskey the starman for Queens bagging 2-06 while Mickey Ward hit 0-03 and Micheal O'Rourke 0-02. It was great to see 6 Down men on the panel namely McComiskey, Luke Howard, Cathal Crilly, Conor Maginn, Jamie O'Reilly and Benny McArdle.

Always been a good contigent of Mourne men on the QUB team in recent years. 2 McCartans, Aidan Carr, James McGovern, Joe Ireland, Mark Rooney and Luke Howard were all on the panel last year and the first 4 were key in winning the Sigerson

Ciaran Donnelly done most of the damage for UUJ while James Kielt gave an exhibition in freetaking for QUB - he got 8 points. Vernon and Courtney very good in the middle.

Queens beat BMC comfortably yesterday to top the group with 3 out of 3.
Poly beat the ranch to finish second.

two quarter finals next week involving the two belfast teams are probably

QUB Vs DCU
DIT Vs UUJ

with the group winners at home

Poly playing DIT in dublin this afternoon (1.00pm) and Queens playing DCU in Armagh this evening (7.30pm).

Two very evenly matched quarter finals.

UUJ beat DIT 1-7 to 0-7 today. Mark Vaughan and Damien McCaul taken off injured for respective sides.
McCaul's apparently a very serious leg injury which held up the game for quite a while.

Title: Re: Univeristy season 2007/08
Post by: TacadoirArdMhacha on November 12, 2008, 11:43:00 PM
Finished 2-12 to 0-9 to DCU (might be out a point or two).

DCU fully deserved their victory, looked a lot sharper than Queens. DCU led for most of the game and could have been out of sight at half time had they not spurned 3 good goal chances (2 of which resulted ine xcellent saves from the QUB goalie).

The goals came in the last 10/15 minutes - the first from a debatable enough penalty and the second in stoppage time after an excellent DCU movement.

DCu looked a class above Queens to be honest. They played some excellent football at times and have a very useful forward line.

Poor game last night in what at half time looked quite promising.

DCU virtually controlled the tempo of the game from start to finish and won the midfield battle quite easily last night which resulted in good quick ball going into their forwards who didn't waste any of it.   Thought Dillon and Croizer tried hard in the Queens defence and the only one of note really in the forwards for me was Shaun O'Neill.  Fought tirelessly for every ball that came his way and hit a couple of cracking scores.  At half time at 7-4 to DCU it looked as if Queens could still get back in it.  But a couple of frees and a dodgy penalty (Paudie Hughes giving a dodgy penalty, I know it nearly shocked me too! ::)) saw DCU virtually seal the game in the first 10-12 minutes of second half.  Poor game but nobody should be getting carried away with DCU just yet!

What course is Mortimor doing by the way?  He seems to be there a lifetime!

Any word of Damien McCaul's injury from UUJ? By the account in the IN it seemed nasty.

A comprehensive humping.  Watching Queens last year they were fond of  the long diagonal ball into 2 speedy forwards (Comiskey & some other lad- not O'Neill), they tried the same ad nauseum last night and got nowhere.  Courtney must have hit 90% of the Queen's frees straight to the opposition yet still insisted on taking them.  Not great around MF, the HF backs and HF's were shocking.

I thought they were missing a load, but looking at the team in the Irish News, they didn't seem to be that many down?? What's the story with Comiskey?

As bennydorano says, a comprehensive humping for Queens. they were very poor and there was little bite in the game, which was the very least i expected.
DCU had quality on the ball all over the pitch and outfought and out muscled the queens men in every sector.

disappointing to hear about damien McCaul's injury in dublin, which marred a great win down there for the poly.
best wishes damien.

Hmm... hugh gallagher (full back), niall bogue (full back), Joe o'kane (half back), Paul McCumiskey (full forward).
think that'd be it? dcu would have more missing?
very early days yet

Bogue, Gallagher, O'Kane and McComiskey would be 4 definite starters for Queens. 3 of them are survivors of the last Sigerson winning team. I wouldnt give up hope on the Malone Road boys yet. Id still fancy them for the Sigerson. DCU will obviously be the biggest threat but a fully fit Queens side can definitely win it.

Promising Tyrone defender Damien McCaul was also injured in the same game, causing play to be delayed for over half an hour as the players and management waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Thankfully, the injury was not as serious as initially feared and McCaul was released from hospital last night with suspected knee ligament damage.

Sean Johnston did an accountancy degree with DCU, then went back to do another in PE Teaching and Biology i think it is, so he will have another few years at sigerson.

Bernard Brogan is in DCU,

They have a serious forward line

Shane O Rourke
Bernard Brogan
Sean Johnston
Conor Mortimer
Michael Lyng
Ciaran Hanratty

and god knows how many more,
i take it everyone would agree DCU would be the most talented team this year, Of Course talent alone wont be enough come Sigerson weekend time.

they had lots of talent last year!....every year since they won it
it looks like they have too many options and struggle to stick with a permanent team

i think johnston and mortimer are in there final year as far as i know hanratty is finished, i think he's doing a course in Dundalk!

The winners of the Ranch and Carlow must play NUIG then because as it is listed there the second round would only produce 6 teams instead of the 7 needed (plus the hosts).

Queen's Poly is one to look forward to anyway. I make that 5 years in a row they've played each other.

Higher Education Authority chiefs are expected to turn down an offer to play the Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cup finals at Croke Park.

GAA president Nickey Brennan has said the stadium would be available to host the High Education Authority's two flagship tournaments, but chairman Jack Devanney has admitted that a lot of other things have to be taking into consideration.

"You have to take other things into account, such as the availability of Croke Park, especially with other sports as well," he said at the draw for the 2009 competitions.

"Our competitions are concluding at a stage where you are coming off the back of two rugby internationals and coming into St. Patrick's Day. It's very hard to see how you would fit it into the schedule for Croke Park. We did make an application for our Freshers final to be a double-header (under lights) in the middle of the week. Maybe that is still on the table.

"Another thing we have to acknowledge is that this is a stadium for 80,000 people. To have that weekend with the press and TV coverage it brings - it is going to look rather small on its own in Croke Park."

Probably correct. Whie I don't like the idea of other sports stopping it happening, you probably would only get a couple of thousand. Also, about 30 or 40% of these lads will robably play in Croker at some stage.
