Title: GAA/ Irish Sports torrent site
Post by: brutus on September 08, 2007, 12:34:56 PM
Hi all,

I am currently thinking about developing a torrent site specifically dedicated to Irish sports and just wanted to gauge any potential interest.
Currently , as far as Im aware the only place where the like can be got is on sites like aussietorrents.com and occasionally demonoid.com.
Before I do any work on any such site I need to see what the interest is like, so please provide feedback, advice and other opinions , even if negative!!
Admin , feel free to move this thread if in the wrong section.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "torrent" site?

I missed the Dublin v Kerry game recently and found it very hard to get a torrent for the match.  Also had problems when in Texas.  I would advise you to be careful though as Setanta probably wouldnt take too kindly to you cutting into their revenue stream

Hi David,

Thanks for your input..

That certainly could be an issue alright, but I have it on good advice that there may be ways around the legalities of any such site.
But before any work is done we need to find out if there is any real interest.

Like i said before any advice or opnions of any shade would be most welcome.

There would be a lot of interest for that, that I am sure of. Especially from ones living aboard who mightn't get a chance to see the game live.

However as David said, you could be opening a whole can of worms for yourself. I'm not going to tell you what to do, for you probably wouldn't listen to me anyway, but I will say is thread carefully.

Legally , it definitely is a minefield and we are investigating whether it is a possible runner on that score.
From what our counsell advises us though it could be possible.

I'd certainly have no problems using a GAA torrent site. I've searched in the past for torrents for GAA matches I'd like to have stored away for a rainy day but just couldn't source any at all.

I'd definitely use it.

Before/After Dublin football games, there are always people on reservoir dubs looking for torrents, so I'm sure you'd have an audience for this service.

Sounds like something that people living abroud would love. Like some of the above I am clueless as to how it would work..is it similar as P2P file sharing? Count me in as interested, would love to see the Sunday Game on Sunday evenings. I have another friend who was discussing this type of feature recently that is interested. Good luck.

There definitely is an audience for an Irish torrent website although I think the numbers would be small enough to begin with. The uknova.com website is one that is devoted to UK users and almost all shows broadcast on BBC are posted there. They do have strict guidelines where stuff thats available on DVD or from Sky or any other broadcaster(e.g. rte) is prohibited from being posted on there. I would advice you to contact them since they have got around the legal ramifications, are not considered "underground" and would be a good model to base the site on.

At the moment the top site for looking for Irish related material would be demonoid.com but there are only a handful of users who post stuff from rte/tg4 and really only one dedicated guy. He has posted all Sunday Games for the past 2 years, The Road to Croker, GAA docs and all the big championship matches, as well as general rte documentaries/dramas. He also posts his torrents to mininova.com and is an absolute legend when it comes to satisfying the viewing needs of Irish overseas.

Here is a sampling of whats currently available for gaa stuff on mininova
http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=gaa
http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=kerry
as well as the excellent doc on Tadhg Kennelly
http://www.mininova.org/tor/871298

I think the issue is finding enough people in Ireland with access to RTE to record and post torrents (and have a good enough upload speed), but I think you will find there would be a dedicated set of Irish exiles wanting to download and seed the torrents.

Let me know if you need help with creating the website from a development(e.g. php) or design standpoint.

Bittorrent is filesharing technology. You download a full show in many pieces and at the end it gets put together to be the original show. Others are also downloading these pieces and uploading them as they get them to other users. This helps profilerate a show quickly to many people and others can help shoulder the bandwidth burden. The torrent file itself is only a small text file with information about the show. You need a bittorrent application on your computer to open the file and start the downloading.
Different applications that all do the same thing, but with slightly different features

Seeders -- people who have a copy of the full file and are letting others download it from them.
Peers/Leechers -- people who are still downloading the full file.

It was invaluable after last years WC when all the games were uploaded, with bbc or aussie commentary. Best place for getting any soccer game or documentary

Would also be on for a torrent website. Have seen on ebay where people are selling these matches and have bought a few of them to watch again.  There a few websites where you can stream foreign sport (Soccer) live and bypass sky sports.
