Title: Minor "C" All-Ireland hurling
Post by: magpie seanie on August 29, 2007, 10:11:03 AM
I know Sligo are ihn the final by virtue of a one point win over Donegal and the fact that a couple of counties on our side of the draw pulled out but I've no idea when the final is due to be played or how the other half is progressing. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Seanie its on next Saturday at 4.30pm in Navan. The Down team is made up of non Ards players and are quite a good side, training hard for this but won't be underestimating the opposition. Should be a good game and its a pity they couldn't find a time and venue for this match before a big game to give a much needed boost to hurling in both counties.

Yes - now that you mention it I had heard that "South Down" were the opposition. Our lads are putting in a good effort too. A lot of the panel are club mates of mine so I wish them well. Only for I've a game myself at home I'd go - I assume its on before the replay between Laois and Derry in the minor football?

Good luck to the South Down Team. A few individuals have being putting in a serious effort over the past few years and they deserve a bit of success.

Game has now been postponed because South Down team have refused to play at short notice. CCC fixed the game on Tuesday evening to be the curtain-raiser to the MFC semi.
Very unfair to the Sligo team and mentors. Also a  full round of Sligo SHC fixtures was postponed at short notice due to this game.
It had been indicated to both counties that the game would probably be on Sat week Sept 8th. However it was decide to up the profile of the final and play before the Minor football replay this Sat.
This game will have to be re-fixed. Both teams have worked too hard in training to throw it out with the bathwater.

If the final is on the 8th will the Down Minor League fixtures on Monday be postponed?

We have a county minor "A" football championship semi final on Monday 10th and there are about 10 of our minors on the hurling panel. Very disappointing news about this cancellation. Sligo have been waiting a long time for this final (no fault of South Down's I know).

Infairness you get 7 days notice for a club league match and should get at least that for an All Ireland final.

Saffron Exile - Down fully within their rights to not play this game at short notice. The reason why the game was moved to Navan at short notice was to get it out of th way more than anything else. Direct quote from a member of the CCCC " what All Ireland, sure Sligo only played one game to get there, how can that be an All Ireland".

The amount of pressure that was brought to bear on the Down panel was a disgrace including being told if they didn't agree to play this game at short notice it might never be played and if it was it wouldn't have official GAA sanction. Last year this same Down team had qualified for this same final before being told on a Monday night that they had to travel two days later to Tyrone to play a game that Tyrone had previously conceded. At such short notice Down had to travel without six of their first 15 and ended up losing the game and the chance of playing in an All Ireland final wasn't going to happen again. Two of the Down clubs Ballyvarley and Newry Shamrocks were playing at the St Judes 7s and both clubs needed their minors for that as well - what were they meant to do travel without their best team again or deny the clubs their players. Incidentally Shamrocks reached the All Ireland final of the 7s so clearly allowing their minors to play for their club was the right decision.

No reason why the game couldn't have been played this Saturday as a curtain raiser to the events in Croke Park if they really wanted to promote hurling. The reason why the game was moved from the 8th was to try and shoehorn it out of the way asap. From your post it would appear that Sligo knew what was happening well before Down did with the Down management first finding out late on Wednesday night - game meant to be fixed tonight by all accounts.

Whatever the wrongs and rights of the situation there's no way that allowing players to play in the sevens is a legitimate reason to cancel an All-Ireland final! That's just ridiculous.

Seanie - the game had already been fixed for the 8th of September and that was the date that Down were working towards so Down didn't cancel any game as the match couldn't be fixed without Down's agreement to the new date. Why should they have played with two days notice to suit a bunch of clowns in the CCCC, the vast majority of whom have no interest in hurling.

Not disputing any of that. Just that you mentioning the Sevens was a complete red herring.

Heard it was 3-13 to 2-6. Sligo were poor in first half (trailed 2-8 to 0-3 at HT) but a few good switches ignited the comeback. It was 2-9 to 2-6 and then a big row led to one of the Sligo players getting the line. After this South Down took over and rattled in 1-4 without reply. That's what I was told anyway. Anyone at it?
