Man B "Yes, 3"
Man A "What age are they?"
Man B "The product of ages is 36"
Man A "Hmmm, I don't have enough info. Tell me more"
Man B "The sum of their ages is your house number"
Man A "Hmmm, I don't have enough info. Tell me more"
Man B "My eldest child is a vegetarian"

What are the ages of the children?
At that point I would have said forget it!
Well, are we getting an answer?
i guessed 1,2 and 18, he said it was wrong, has to be correct as the product of these three numbers is 36, isnt it?
But they're not the only three possible ages whose product is 36. But I went for that as well, for what I thought was a logical reason.
also then, 1,1, 36 or 2,2,9
Or 1,3,12, or 1,4,9 or 1,6,6 or 2,3,6, or 3,3,4.
one of them have to be correct?
the standard answer to this puzzle is bollocks. as the reason that is given isn't necessarily true. The phrase Irish twins may help you
are any of the above correct?
I give up - heganboy or Orior, can you PM me the answer?
me too
Okay, I'll try to explain.
There are obviously several permutations to 36, i.e.
2, 2, 9
1, 6, 6
3, 3, 4
1, 2, 18
1, 1, 36
1, 4, 9
In the second step, we're told that the sum of the ages is his house number.
2 + 2 + 9 = 13
1 + 6 + 6 = 13
3 + 3 + 4 = 10
1 + 2 + 18 = 21
1 + 1 + 36 = 38
1 + 4 + 9 = 14
There are two permutations that are the same. As the man did not have enough info after the second statement, then his house number must be 13
The third statment tells us that there is one eldest child (ie not twins).
So the childrens ages must be 2, 2 and 9
QED.
Very tenuious 2nd step there orior

Makes sense to me.
and its bollocks because:
you can have 2 6 year olds that aren't twins, i.e. born within a year of each other (irish twins)
Quod Erat isn't even close to Demonstrandum
Ah sure nobody's perfect :(
heres one to think about.
was flicking the through the TV channels and came across the beginners guide to the cosmos, or something like that, they were talking about the size of the universe and all, and they stated that the universe is expanding, so my question is into what?
Oh and i have no idea
Where will it all end...?
I'll get my coat.

Into the continuum of the cosmos SB, i.e., space ;)

Over the past number of years my wifes arse is expanding and I have nightmares about the same question.
so
if the universe is expanding into the cosmos, is the cosmos expanding too?
Its all relative
;-)

Not necessarily, it exists already, but the extent of human knowledge isn't such that it (yet) knows the full reach of the boundaries of the cosmos (I think).
