I went to an ice hockey match in Switzerland recently. One element that could be transferred to the GAA was 5 home jerseys with the names and squad numbers of 5 players suspended above the centre circle. In GAA they could be in the stand.
They represent the 5 best ever players as chosen by the fans. What 5 would you choose for your county ?
Peter Canavan
Frank McGuigan
Sean Cavanagh
Iggy Jones
Last one is a tough one, possibly one of Stephen O'Neill, Eugene McKenna, Brian Dooher, Conor Gormley or Phillip Jordan.
Anthony Tohill
Sean O'Connell
Kieran Mckeever
Jim Mckeever
Fergal Doherty
Michael Murphy
Karl Lacey
Martin McHugh
Manus Boyle
Brian McEniff (player/manager contributions combined)
Im led to believe that if you go back to the sixties then Sean O'Neill, Paddy Doherty and Tom O'Hare would all make the list. Colm McAlarney for the seventies too.
But in my time:
Greg Blaney
Mickey Linden
Benny Coulter
James McCartan Jr
Ross Carr
Sean O'Neill
Paddy Doherty
Leo Murphy
Mickey Linden
Benny Coulter
Can only go on those I've actually watched live.
Peter Canavan
Sean Cavanagh
Philip Jordan
Stephen O'Neill
Brian Dooher

To be fair to the different playing positions in any team, I have decided to use poetic licence to select my SEVEN all time best Derry county players ie one goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards. (and I have seen them all!).
Goalkeeper :John Somers
Defenders: Kieran McKeever,Tony Scullion.
Midfielders : Jim McKeever,Anthony Tohill

Excellent post. I think big Damien is certainly worthy of at least a mention as keeper. And I would add Mickey Lynch to your honorary members.
But getting back to the original post, I think it's impossible to name five. Tohill and Jim mckeever are the only two certs. Sean O'Connell merits a mention for longevity and being the only Derry man with four ulster senior medals. Henry as captain in 93 also. But couldn't narrow it down to five.

So let me get this right, you have Doherty, Lynch, Muldoon and Bradley in the list of our greatest players, all played on the same team for a number of seasons and for the best part of 6 yrs with the exception of 2011 couldn't put two games back to back in the Ulster championship. Lads have a word with yourselves
Maybe a actual decent outside manager would done something with them players instead of picking the cheapest option every time.
Can't wait for a Kerry top 5, there's a real row to pick that line up.

Definitely Eugene McKenna for me. I have never seen another midfielder since who could hang for a ball like him. When he did it their would be a deep intake of breath from the crowd. I remember being at a league game in Newcastle and he went crazy in the last ten minutes of the game and caught everything. I was chatting to Liam Grugan (who was playing that day) after the game that night and he said he went up for kick out and he felt a knee on his shoulder which was Eugene.

Enda Smith.
Francie Grehan and Enon Gavin would be close imo.
But not many Rossies would dispute that 5. Maybe Smith as he hasnt produced in a big game outside connacht yet! Hopefully watch this space.
It's supposed to be the best 5 of all time which includes 43/44.
Hardly anyone left alive who saw them though.
1945 to 2010 my 5 are
O'Malley,
Dermot
Tony
Harry
Gerry Connellan
No debate on first four and Aidan Brady has to be included as number 5.
Pat Lindsay?
He would be in at 6 or 7 with Danny Murray.

A bit of personal bias in the Connellan selection.
He was my hero growing up, unfortunately injuries restricted his County career.
Aidan Brady seems a good choice alright.

All fantastic players but I can't see who I would drop out to make room for them.Id also give honourable mentions to James Nallen and Chris Barrett too.Barretts performance in the 17 final was the best I've ever seen.

Ah no, I don't think it's right to try to compare the merits of players I never saw in action so confined it to those I saw playing.
