Title: Green Party in NI is FOR! Bonfires - Explain This!
Post by: Seany on August 02, 2017, 11:00:18 PM
Tonight's meeting of Belfast City Council voted on the following motion;

"This Council is opposed to rogue bonfires where they present a threat to life, to property, to the environment, where they cause damage to public amenities and where they facilitate hate crime activities.

"On the basis of these concerns this Council gives permission to our Council officers to remove bonfire materials or employ contractors to facilitate the removal of bonfire materials from Council sites and other sites which belong to Statutory Agencies and those which are in private ownership.

Of course, the unionist parties voted against.  No strategy, leadership, charisma or sense.  But incredibly, and this utterly defies explanation by any raitonal human being, the Green Party which exists apparently to help us to improve the invironment, voted AGAINST! This motion. I mean. WTF?  WHat the hell is going on with this party?  Please, someone explain this to me. It just makes no sense that a party of the environment could not support a motion that would seek to eradicate rogue bonfires which burn tyres, aerosols etc etc. Just totally defies explanation.

If that's true, then they should consider renaming themselves The Yellow Party.

The Green Party councillor said that they opposed it as there was no guarantees for the safety of workers tasked with removing bonfire material. There is no way they could remove anything without an escort from riot police.

What is the workable proposal that the Green Party did not support?

It's entirely possible to contend that the greens were the only party to meaningfully engage in this debate. Others seem more interested in burying their head in the sand or grandstanding

I think the excuse they used was that it didn't do enough to protect council workers. Even though it's private contractors that do the work! Go figure.

Am I missing something here?

Surely its up to the PSNI to ensure no one is assaulted going about their work. I get the distinct impression that there's a lack of willingness from the PSNI to prevent the law being broken on this matter. The threat of unionist violence seems to be the issue that no one wants to address.

The residents of that block of apartments in Sandy Row are being screwed over royally as well. They need to go after the NIO for allowing the illegal activity that damaged their property.

Surely the implementation strategy could be decided later?  Seems to be an absolute brain fart for the greens to vote against this?
