Title: TG4 biggest audience ever
Post by: magickingdom on May 01, 2007, 03:23:42 PM
i see the nhl final last sunday brought tg4 its biggest audience yet for any programme - 309,000. while its great for tg4 i think the gaa should demand that national league finals be carried on rte1 or 2.

Didn't TG4 offer the most for the rights for the NFL/NHL . If RTE arent going to pay the most no point not taking it from someone else

Why should TG4 not carry it?  It's not like they're subscription.

RTE own tg4. they are run under the same budget and rte just decide where they'll what before bidding approprietly

RTE are pretty crap, that sunday sport show is a joke, i know this has been said before about them showin more of the "weekly club" segment than actual highlights.
TG4 coverage is second to none, sitting on a sunday (hangover or no hangover) since the start of the league and wachin one or two matches is great or even the saturday night matches. long may it continue

Fair play to TG4, they are the only ones interested in showing NFL/NHL and they also broadcasted a fantastic Sigerson Cup final this year, was at the game itself so didn't see the coverage but it's good news for GAA fans that TG4 are doing well and will continue to pump whatever money they can into covering the GAA

Plus they offer an excellent website facility too watch the games again after they have been broadcast. Their coverage of GAA related material is 10 times better than RTE ever was

The proper attendance figure was probably 32,000.
Two stands almost fulll & one terrace in operation with at least 5,000 on it.

Wise yourself up magickingdom!!!
Why should TG4 do all the hard work reporting on all the league games only for RTÉ to step in for the glamour games!
It doesn't make sense, and wouldn't happen anywhere else so why should it happen here!!!

I wonder would more people watch if it was on RTÉ? you know, with the commentary and analysis in english. Dosent bother me and all, think TG4 do a great job but would it be more accesable to floating viewers.

my point is that paint drying on rte 1 will be watched by more people than paint drying on rte 2 and infinately more people than tg4. all i'm saying is the national leagues finals are been treated poorly. a few years ago the final was played in limerick at 5 oclock in the evening and drew 7500. thats a disgrace for the second most important competition. nicky brennan commented on the fact that it can start with a bang and end with a wimper. tg4 do great work period but the two finals should be in croke park on the same sunday (last sunday in april) every year and promoted on rte 1 or 2...

Fair point magickingdom,
but the games being on RTÉ 1or2 is not going to have an affect on the size of the crowd at the game, if anything it would take away from it to make it a non-event.
The root of the problem lies with the GAA marketing team. Everyone seen what a fantastic job they could do with the crowd it attracted to the Dublin-Tyrone game. Why can they not market the finals in the same manner played on the one weekend in Croker?

The hurling in Semple makes sense to me, just need to give it a bit of advertising and i bet they could have filled it.

Quotethink the gaa should demand that national league finals be carried on rte1 or 2.

Why??? Sure isn't TG4 as widely available as RTE?  What is your reasoning for only having big games on RTE?  Is it because of the language the game is being broadcast in?

If so, then the problem resides with the person who can't understand Irish, as opposed to it being broadcast in Irish.

As for TG4, it is probably one of the stations I watch the most, some of their documentaries are excellent.

I agree balladmaker!
TG4 has some of the best programmes on TV. I think that a few of the posters are anti-Irish speaking by the way some of the comments are spouting about on this board.

Either learn the language and be a true Gael, or say nothing at all!!

my point is been misunderstood. i think tg4 is an excellent station. i would be making the same point if the league finals were been shown on setanta or tv3. would you be happy enough if the ai finals were shown on setanta/tg4/tv3. they need to make an 'institution' out of the league finals like the ai finals. no one even knows what date next years national league finals are on never mind where they'll be played..

In todays digital T.V age surely its not beyond the wit of Tg4 to broadcast both in Irish and English?
I know its an Irish language chanel but its also a commercial entity. An English sideband might see their numbers creep up.

You're not that bright are you armaghtothebone???

What would the point in that be?

The whole point of broadcasting in Irish is to spread the language! Broadcasting in English would be like having another Channel like RTÉ1or2!!

an liathróid - the ball
an réiteoir - the refree
an cúl báire - the goal keeper
cúl - goal

rófhada ar dhéis - to far to the right ( also wide)
