But not, by well over 100 years, the last state to outlaw slavery.

http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history (http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history) is great for this kind of thing.

Examples for today:
1986
Hand of God helps out Maradona
On this day in 1986, Argentine midfielder Diego Maradona scores two goals to lead Argentina past England and into the semifinals of the World Cup.

1962
Mysterious crash in Guadeloupe
On this day in 1962, an Air France Boeing 707 crashes on the island of Guadeloupe, killing all 113 passengers and crew members aboard. This crash was only one of five major accidents involving Boeing 707s during the year. Altogether, the five crashes killed 457 people.

1941
Germany launches Operation Barbarossa—the invasion of Russia
On this day in 1941, over 3 million German troops invade Russia in three parallel offensives, in what is the most powerful invasion force in history. Nineteen panzer divisions, 3,000 tanks, 2,500 aircraft, and 7,000 artillery pieces pour across a thousand-mile front as Hitler goes to war on a second front.

Great finish to a great World Cup - probably the last World Cup to have that feeling of the unknown about it, as all but one of the winning squad played their football in South America.

Find it hard to believe that was 37 years ago. Some wonderful memories.

Here's an obscure one. On June 29th 1905 Moonlight Graham made his one and only major league baseball appearance. He's the character from the movie Field of Dreams, the doctor. So there you are now. Remember the line

"Well, you know I... I never got to bat in the major leagues. I would have liked to have had that chance. Just once. To stare down a big league pitcher. To stare him down, and just as he goes into his windup, wink. Make him think you know something he doesn't. That's what I wish for. Chance to squint at a sky so blue that it hurts your eyes just to look at it. To feel the tingling in your arm as you connect with the ball. To run the bases - stretch a double into a triple, and flop face-first into third, wrap your arms around the bag. That's my wish, Ray Kinsella. That's my wish. And is there enough magic out there in the moonlight to make this dream come true?"

Today in 1917 a Royal Proclamation by King George V changes name of British Royal family from German Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.

The name change didn't ,however ,address the multi generational inbreeding that still afflicts the saxe coburg gothas to this day.
