A report published today concludes that Irish will no longer be the primary language in any Gaeltacht community in ten years.
The research, commissioned by State agency Údarás na Gaeltachta, is based on census figures for 2006 and 2011.
The authors conclude that the social use of Irish in the Gaeltacht is declining at an even more rapid rate than predicted in their last report in 2007.

Very depressing news. Not all that surprised.
Conamara: Strongest Gaeltacht, much of it strong.
Tír Chonaill (Donegal): Parts of it strong
Corca Dhuibhne (West Kerry): Only most westerly part of it is strong.
Iorrais (Mayo): Weak enough, only Ceathrú Thaidhg is strong.
Rath Cairn (Meath): Reasonably strong, but well behind the big three.
An Rinn (Waterford): Only reasonable.
Múscraí (West Cork): Parts of it very weak, tiny part of it reasonable.
Uíbh Ráthach (South Kerry): Very weak. Shouldn't be a Gaeltacht.
Baile Ghib (Meath): Shouldn't be a Gaeltacht at all.
What are the advantages of being granted Gaeltacht status?
Everything I've ever hear suggests it's a money thing(grants), but does anyone know what exactly the areas get out of this?

That's a bit harsh. Firstly Erris isn't a Gaeltacht. It was a Barony. Parts of Erris are considered Gaeltacht areas. Eachléim for example probably has twice as many Irish speakers as Ceathrú Thaidhg, should they all be 'stripped' of Gaeltacht status? Also Mayo has 2 other Gaeltacht areas outside Erris.

Anyone know if this is getting special "Gaeltacht" funds?
I remember reading Jack O'Connor's book and he had an account of a team from Kerry who had close to zero Irish taking part and the prime motivation seemed to be a weekend on the piss?

What are the advantages of being granted Gaeltacht status?

Wasn't every aware of the following places as Gaeltachts
QuoteRath Cairn (Meath): Reasonably strong, but well behind the big three.
Múscraí (West Cork): Parts of it very weak, tiny part of it reasonable.
Uíbh Ráthach (South Kerry): Very weak. Shouldn't be a Gaeltacht.

Was there some talk about a Gaeltacht being set up in Dublin somewhere at one stage?
Irish is actually growing outside of na Gaeltachtaí, and fantastic work is being done in South Dublin in particular. I was struck by the quality of Irish I heard from South Dublin students who travelled to an Irish college. It is in decline within na Gaeltachtaí. One of the suggestions which I believe didn't go ahead was for three categories to be introduced, with Category A Gaeltachtaí retaining all of the benefits that currently go with being a Gaeltacht. As it stands, an area with 40% Irish speakers gets the same benefits as a place like Camus in Galway that has 90%. Places like na Gaeltachtaí would really be hit badly without their status, so it might encourage them to up the game. I think it's also being introduced that you have zero English being used up until 1st class in Gaeltacht primary schools (bar English lessons, obviously), which I think is an excellent idea if teachers stand by it. That's not currently happening.
Also, it all seems to be determined on what's collected in the censuses. All you have to do is tick a box and say you have Irish. Hey presto, Uíbh Ráthach and Baile Ghib are Gaeltachtaí without speaking Irish. I don't mean to be harsh on na Gaeltachtaí, they deserve enormous credit for keeping the language alive longer than everywhere else. Even thirty years ago, Múscraí in West Cork was as strong as Corca Dhuibhne is now, while Corca Dhuibhne was nearly as strong as Conamara. Now only small parts of Corca Dhuibhne have over 70% Irish speakers (according to census, real figure is likely to be less, as is the case with every area in the country), while Múscraí are down to 40% (which, as I say, is also much lower in reality. I would say maybe 15%, and that's possibly being kind). Even Conamara, where the figures are quoted at about 85% on average are more likely to be around 60-70%.

Was surprised An Spideal got that far.
They're an average intermediate side in Galway.

Cill Chartha not happy at all about being robbed of their Donegal players. Meeting last night and another this morning but no joy so far.
Anthony Thompson had to go back to work abroad and would not have been available anyway for Naomh Conaill.
Loads more rain. Junior Peil na mBan Final stopped with 5 minutes to go. Taking a look at the pitch at 1-30pm.
Senior Final postponed - easier to get the two Donegal teams to arrange the match at a later date.
Waiting for an hour to decide on the Junior Final.
Looking dodgy though.
