Title: Best & Worst GAA jerseys of All Time
Post by: Feckitt on April 01, 2015, 01:50:45 PM
Was watching Ogie Moran on Laochra Gael last night.  Apologies I can never figure out how to post a  photo on here but two of the best and worst jerseys of all time were on display in the 1981 All Ireland Final.

Offaly had the cool tight fitting white jersey with a high gold banner and green on the shoulders.

Kerry however had the most godawful green and gold shiny thing with shiny green shorts.  (never.seen.worse.)

In the 1981 final I think Offaly had the stripes down the side, similar to an old Coventry City kit at the time. The 1982 Final was where the green and gold went across the shoulder and chest. I thought that was lovely. In 1981 Kerry had that shiny abomination alright, but I think in 1982 they had a plain green with gold collar and cuffs.

That Offaly jersey from 1982 is still my favourite jersey, although they have had some other nice white jerseys in the meantime in fairness. The current one isn't bad at all.

Actually I beg your pardon, you are right. Offaly wore the same jersey in 1981 and 1982. Kerry changed for 1982.

The Offaly jersey I was thinking of was from 1980 semi final, the day Matt Connor scored 2-9 and lost.

Yep the 1980 Offaly jersey was on telly last night as well with the thin green and gold stripes down one side of the jersey, but the 1981/1982 jersey is the real deal.

I think an old Ireland International Rules jersey from the 80s was almost exactly the same.

Pretty much every kit Armagh have turned out in since they recruited some bucko from Lurgan  who normally designed tea-pots and tableware to create the 2002 jersey.  Might explain why the sleeves were 3/4 length.

Post by: Oraisteach on April 01, 2015, 09:58:51 PM
I like a simple jersey, so I do think that the 2002 Armagh version had a bit too much crap on it, but I have to say that it's hard to take seriously a jersey with the Hunky Dory logo on it.  I wonder what team jersey has the ugliest or most comical logo on it.

I was sent an email of a terrible looking jersey a few years ago. IIRC, 2 clubs merged in Limerick, one with horizontal stripes, one with vertical and neither backed down when it came to who's stripes would be on the new jersey so both were accommodated and no I don't mean a checked pattern either.

Good:

Cork's blood and bandage is one of the iconic colour combinations in the GAA. This was a particularly good example for the 1984 All-Ireland final.

Down's 1991 kit was a beauty.

I liked this Derry kit, they only wore it 1992. A lot of other teams copied the hoop on the shoulder but none worked as well.

The Kerry Adidas kit

Both of these kits were simple but elegant - apart from the Vodafone logo which spoiled the Dublin kit a bit.

You can't beat simplicity when it comes to GAA jersey designs. Limerick 2013.

Two more Cork ones here.

The hooped goalkeeper jersey has always been iconic.

(http://a0.dmlimg.com/NGQ0MjBmOTgzMzgyMzk3YjFiYTY1MTUxNmFhMmY4NjVBhGsC2AFTVdNqyIWHcMAKaHR0cDovL21lZGlhLmFkc2ltZy5jb20vYThjN2EyZjQzZTQ1MjdiNWFjODQ2ZDBlNzM2ZDQwZTFiNjk3NDU5ODBmMTAyZDdjMDFkZDYwNjczNDg1NzA3Yi5qcGd8fHx8fHw3MDB4NTI1fGh0dHA6Ly93d3cuYWR2ZXJ0cy5pZS9zdGF0aWMvaS93YXRlcm1hcmsucG5nfHx8.jpg)

Can't find a colour photograph of the 1973 All-Ireland football final kit. A variation on this theme also came up trumps for Cork in the 2010 final.

We've had a few horrible ones the last few years, would love a traditional on without little addons.

Can't believe no one mentioned the Wexford one from a few years ago, like the derry one shown in this thread it was one of them blended colours one and just looks like a cheap fake one

Bad:

One of Kerry's most successful jerseys was also their worst ever. A really horrible effort here.

Dublin had the look of losers in this abomination. 17 point losers, to be precise.

Another shocker of a design from Dublin. The white collar just doesn't work.

A blobby eyesore from Tipperary which has rightly been replaced after just one year.

Donegal making the opposition dizzy due to the whirlpool effect on their jerseys was a key factor in their rise to glory.

Armagh's 2002 jersey was by no means a classic. Hard to make orange look attractive in any event but this certainly didn't.

Really nasty combination of different shades of green here on Limerick's 208-2010 jersey.

Can't find a pic of it online, but the blue Kerry jersey in 1998/99 was the nicest I've ever seen. It was similar to this one-off jersey from the 2011 semi final, except it had all white trim.

I also like some of the Down jerseys..the current effort is good, apart from the sponsors logo being too big IMO.

I'd agree with a previous poster on the UCC jersey also, really nice..and this away jersey from a few years ago was mint.

In terms of worst, couple of pics below would be amongst the worst. First is of Whitechurch, a junior club on Cork. Second is a Wexford effort from a few years back..atrocious.

Proper Cork jerseys have to have a white collar like the one sported above by Seanie Leary*.

And no giant white hairs** on the lower part of the jersey.

*Seanie Leary, not Seanie O'Leary.

**Although that could possibly be a side on view of a garden fork.

What's a 'garden fork'? Bleedin' Dubs. A Beet fork, which has the rounded tines at the end, or a pitch fork, with the sharp tines, I could put up with. Even a 'pike' would have been more authentic even though there's an extra tine.  But a 'garden fork'? Abomination.

I wasn't aware there was any other type of garden fork, apart from what normal people call a garden fork, as I am urban and chic and not from a rural backwater where differences between garden forks may well be a regular topic of discussion due to the overwhelming boredom of living there.

Never mind  the Dubs AZ, I'm wondering now did you have a secret Carlow upbringing I wasn't aware of? I'm all too familiar with the implement you refer to as a beet fork, I've spent many hours blistering my hands with it, but whether in Offaly or Roscommon, it's only ever been called (in my company anyway) after its primary use - a turf fork. Or was there work to be had on a beet farm somewhere around Cloghan that I missed?

He means a grape. But the one in that pic has only three tines.

Don't you mean graip?

In my day, pitch forks had two tines. Graips could have had 3 or 4.

Pitchforks still only have 2 prongs.

We only used it for turf as well, but still called it a beet fork.
