What you mean , the British soldiers? Why would they be remembered for?

Of course they should be remembered. 1916 was battle after all. If you belittle those that you defeat then you take away from your own achievement.
In the US, July 4th commemorates the American victory over the British. Nowhere have I heard of people commemorating the defeated imperialists on that day.
It's not April Fool's Day yet, this thread has to be a wind up.

It must be the Ireland that we live in today so.......
What the government does to commemorate 1916 won't matter a fcuk to me.

I only started it because it was on the Claire Byrne show. I know exactly what I want to see commemorated, and want to see other people's point of view. It set off a massive part in our island's history.

Ah yes, the Claire Byrne show.
The aural equivalent of the spindo.
I can only imagine what the guests were proposing, a reenactment of the executions with John Bruton as the officer in charge.
I fully expect the government to make a dogs dinner of this.

We didn't defeat them in 1916 though.

They were never really defeated, if they wanted to they could have levelled the whole place. They walked away on their own terms creating a mess that still exists today.
Definitely merits a 'Savage eye' one off special.

There's still a lot of West Brits and Free Staters who are sad they ever left (and want them back).
The successive governments have some neck celebrating 1916 after what they've done to the place.

A reference to the executions of 1916 leaders and a photograph of IRA volunteers were removed from a leaflet launching the Government's programme of centenary events last November.
The leaflet and 'Ireland Inspires' video were criticised for not having any direct reference to the Rising but including the Queen of England and Bob Geldof.

For slavery fled, oh REBEL dead

Should remove Pearse and Co. as not to offend.
Those terrorists would be a blight on the 1916 celebrations.
They are going to remove the spire on O'Connell street at the cost of 500,000 for 2 weeks to make the place more authentic.
That's what the priority is these days eh and where tax money is going.
I wonder did the people of 1916 shop at footlocker or if the 1916 leaders send for Supermacs during the GPO siege?
Jesus Fox. You outdo yourself.

the Irish question back pre 1916 helped to bring down the Liberal Party and reshape British politics. there were no easy answers then and there still aren't
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Strange_Death_of_Liberal_England
Dangerfield argues that four great rebellions before the Great War effectively destroyed the Liberal Party as a party of government. These rebellions were the Conservative Party's fight against the Parliament Act 1911;
the threat of civil war in Ireland by the Ulster Unionists under Sir Edward Carson with the encouragement of Conservative leader Andrew Bonar Law; the Suffragette movement under the Pankhursts; and the increasingly militant trade unions under the influence of syndicalism.
