Title: Derry v Mayo. Celtic Park. March 8th 2015.
Post by: moysider on March 02, 2015, 11:35:37 PM
A must win for Derry if they re going to stay in Div.1. I think they will get it. Their need is greater and we ve not done so good against Derry teams down the years. A win here and we d find it hard to avoid the dreaded semi-finals.
I have to say I don t understand Derry. Eoin Bradley, Chrissy McKeigue, Fergal Doherty, Mark Lynch, James Kielt are top players but seem to be missing a lot. Injuries?

A few of those lads ( Bradley, Doherty and Kielt) were playing or came on against Tyrone i was reading. They missed the first 2 games. Lynch was suspended for that game. Chrissy McKaigue missing due to being with Slaughtneil.

Just blooding different players, probably make 7 or 8 changes again from the Tyrone game

Eoin Bradly is still involved with Glenavon which was why he only came off the bench in the Donegal and Kerry.

The reason he was able to start in the Tyrone game was Glenavon didnt have a game last weekend.

Glenavon have games on the weekends of the 7th, 14th and 28th and Derry have games on the 8th,15th and the 28th so that puts his involvement in the Dublin game in particular in doubt.

Yeah; I tried to watch that Derry/Tyrone match but even the cameras couldn t cope with the conditions. But I noted the return of Doherty and Kielt. Bradley started and is capable of anything.  Kielt came on as a sub and was taken off later, so his fitness cant be great yet. Last year they cut through the league and did poorly after. Their players are better than that. They killed us in league semi last year with 14 men and saved our bacon while they were at it. We couldn t handle McGuckin at all last year. He came on as a sub other night and looks 25% bigger than the last time I saw him - and he wasn t small then either. ????

Bradley hasn't started recent games for Glenavon so I wouldn't be surprised if he's available for some of the remaining league games. Derry have had a poor start to the league but I think they've taken a change of approach this year were they are trying to peak during the summer, in recent years they've had really good league campaigns and flopped in the championship. Also missing key players like Doherty, Eoin Bradley and the some of the slaughtneil contingent hasn't helped.

McGuckin is doing a post grad teaching course in England for the year so has probably missed a lot of training and is only home at the weekends, he wouldnt be long putting on the pounds i'd say, but expect him to get into better shape for the summer. Kielt is one of those players people from other county's always mention, probably because he appears on highlight reels with a couple of long range points every game, i'd say he's not a certain starter though, he has just returned from ankle surgery.

On Derry's decent record v Mayo, i'd say it's probably because Mayo don't play defensive football, play Donegal type tactics against Derry and you will be sure to get a result.

2 out of our 3 matches so far have been against the ultra defensive Donegal and the unbelievably ultra defensive Tyrone, so we're looking forward to a fairly open match. Doc is back to shore up the middle. Will be an interesting tussle with A / S O'Shea, unless big Aiden is thrown up top.

Hopefully the crazy snow clears ok

While we may not be one of the ultras we were much more defensive the last day than we were previously and only played with 3 out and out attackers. I expect/hope that this continues.
What happens with AOS will be interesting. It would be naïve to expect he would be as effective every day inside. From now on most teams would double up and smother him out. People were saying that he is a way of beating the blanket defence but Monaghan were not ultra defensive the last day.

I'm expecting AOS to be given a sort of 'roaming' role between midfield and the FF line from now on.

He'd best stay away from Midfield lest big Doherty sorts him out again . . .

Mayo to win fairly handy I'd say. We're not going the best.

I take it you aren't a regular poster on WJ's blog? They're gone all positive all of a sudden! I know we beat 13 man Monaghan, but we had a load of terrible wides and only pulled away when Monaghan got the 2 sent off.

Yeah, I wouldn't get too carried away over beating 13 men.

We've had a lot of wides in the last two games, we either need to stop shooting from stupid positions or show a bit more composure

I'd be more optimistic after what I saw v Monaghan. Even before the sending offs we opened them up at will. Now, it was annoying to see us make poor decisions and butcher chances, but the important thing was that attitude was spot on and we got the game plan right. It s too early anyway to be hitting the high notes. I wouldn t mind the wides either.
Maybe I'm optimistic because Pateen played a system that I cried out for after Tyrone. It wasn t exactly a 2 man ff line but it was next best thing with Aidan playing just on the point behind Ron. and Cillian, and the rest of the forwards working their arses off. Those other forwards are ideally suited to this system. They cover back and cover ground and all 3 scored from play as well. As did Vaughan. Vaughan playing midfield appears to be a long term project. With teams conceding kick outs its probably the right way to go.
I know it probably wont be popular, but it s the only way imo.
We ll see how it pans out. We might not be able to afford the luxury of Aidan playing ff. No use having him in there and pumping ould high ball in if likes of Justin McMahon and 4/5 more around him. But he ll always occupy a couple of defenders I suppose. I d like to see him used from start now in last day role. I d hate to see him used as a 'Hail Mary' option when we re bet and he s swarmed like bees around a bear.

haha, maybe I was a biteen ott there but it wasn't the actual win that pleased me as such , there were positives in the game . AOS being the obvious and I'm not being all gung-ho either about him being at ff as I doubt we would be able to afford him in there all the time , it's just its being said by a lot of supporters that it was a no no and I think it was proven it could be used and I believe Salthill will be a place next June where it might prove effective. Anyway we looked sharper overall albeit our shooting boots were not on some of the time especially early on, MgLoughlin miss was ridiculous.

I'm not so sure about Vaughan in the middle, again though it will be horses for courses, could even try keegan there with our half back options at the moment. Keane is doin well , he is so focused , he deserves his chance now .

Any update on Evan regans recovery ?

I used to think Caff. would be better at 6 so this is going to be interesting. Looks like the keepers are going to be rotated for the league. Nice to see Forde get a start.

Yes at club level. We will have to see at this level. Pat liked to keep opponents guessing with the Mitchels by switching him and Barry Moran between FF and midfield. or both midfield or other positions. He is strong and gets stuck in and can kick a good pass at club level. He had a great game against Bridget's in Roscommon when Barry Moran was sent off.

I thought he was only average enough over that club championship. It will be interesting to see if he can cut it at this level. The panel is being cut back to 32 so the pressure is on a lot of guys to prove they're worth it. The bench for Mayo as usual is not named but it could be strong enough with the likes of A Dillon, B Moran, Parsons, A Moran, Sweeney, Freeman, Drake, Gibbons, McHale and maybe R. Feeney if they are all fit.

I think he's injured but unsure. 4 others I didn't mention were Harrisson, Hennelly, Clarke and Conroy which gives management a pick of about 15 more to get 10 from for a 25 man panel.

Vaughan came off injured last day while going well.
Looks like U21s not considered for this because O Connor the younger would be a nailed on starter now in most scenarios.

Cutting that panel to 32 if they have to will take guts. Hardly keep 3 goalies if that is the case.

Exactly. I found I've always been let down when optimistic about Derry so pessimism usually leaves me pleasantly surprised.
In all seriousness the conditions were a leveler for that game and I think we could struggle for scores against Mayo with the forwards named.

Eoin Bradley is missing because he is on a family holiday.

The fact that Derry have only been able to get Lynch and Bradley on the pitch at the same time for very limited amounts of time in the league has definitely not helped their attack.

Sounds like Mayo had a bit of luck with what sounded like a point given as a wide by the umpires....and that's going on what the lads on MWR have said

Kielt hits the post with a free and goes wide

Mayo getting the bounce of the ball it sounds like

Mayo fall over the end-line ; sounds like Derry came very close to a goal chance/possible penalty late on.

Derry surely doomed now.

Mayo looking good for the semis now.

Good result. It is to often we come out of Derry with the points so I am happy enough, especially considering the crap performance against Tyrone has been followed with two wins against Ulster teams.

Makes it very interesting for next weekends games. Monaghan v Derry is a must win for both sides. And Dublin will be going to Castlebar on a mission as they are in second last place now and possibly facing relegation if Monaghan were to win next weekend.

Despite the setbacks over the last couple of years, most Mayo fans have great respect for this group of players. A lot (of the real fans) realise that they are still in a good place and that this will not last forever. So they might as well enjoy it while it lasts.

According to the radio a lock of the supporters headed for the fur style when Mayo scored their second goal.

Overall they are a real credit to the county.
