Yes, I always felt that Willie Nelsons interpretation of this great Elvis composition
was the most authentic version. It is almost as if he wrote the song himself.
It takes a special talent to pull that off.

Didn't willie nelson write it and Elvis the one who covered it? The Elvis version is by far and away the best one IMO, especially the version where the guitar is more promo any than the piano. One of my favourite so songs.
Sorry to turn it into Doctor Who, but it was too good not to share.

Ah now - this is a tough one. Its listed as a co-written song between them and although he recorded first he was unsatisfied and never released it. She did release it first, and then he released it after. so cover or not is entirely up to you.
I always loved that the water boys used it as an opening to the pan within couldn't call this one a cover I don't think, have a listen: http://youtu.be/_mAoCLgSrW4

Okay, Have sifted through the submissions - through no particular selection process (apart from their version made me think they wrote it... and with the help of Turkish Beer) - here is my selection of the best so far.
I have left out my submissions, because I really can't pick between them and the originals.
But, in a moment of refraction, I have added two, that I think stand up to the rest.
So, if you could be arsed, please listen and re-post till we see who has the honour of being the Best Cover Song in the world ever (by our own humble standards).

Much as I hate to put forward anything that X Factor helped create, Leona Lewis's version of Run is superb: took an average rock song and made it quite haunting.
I'm also rather partial to Somewhere Only We Know when sang by Lily Allen.

Joe Cocker - a little help from my friends (The Beatles). Difficult feat to cover a Beatles track, but Cocker managed to put his own twist on the song and gave it a completely different sound.

Gets close in my opinion no cover will ever beat the original though.
Too much american smaltz for my liking. Then the guitar solo didn't hit all the notes and his timing seemed off as well.
