Title: Fallen Tree
Post by: snoopdog on December 19, 2013, 12:05:54 PM
Lads had a tree blown over into the garden last night. Not a massive tree but big enough. Any idea if its worth much for fire wood.
Its a decent size. Neighbour offered to cut it up and take it away . remove remaining stump and mend fence for nothing. Just really wondering how much the timber is worth and is he giving me a good deal.
No interest in burning it myself.

If you have no interest in burning the wood, and he is going to clear it away and fix your fence for you, I'd let him at it.
He's not going to buying a new car with the profit.

£50 a tonne, that's what I was paying for trees.

There'd hardly be a tonne in it the way you're talking so he's hardly taking the hand out of you

Let your neighbour whack away. If it was Pine, beech or ash and had alot of it, people in certain parts of Belfast are paying £5 upwards per bag (believe it or not). Creightons garage on Lisburn road is selling bags of logs for £6.50 odds. Yes you heard me.

I'd normally offer to leave half the chopped logs in return for permission in taking a tree away.

you're getting a good deal if he fixes the fence and removes the stump.
don't begrudge him hi.

for the amount of money he may or may not make on the wood he has to store and season it - he may burn it himself and save buying wood but he's doing you a good turn

I actually think he'll screw you over here big lad. I predict that he will take the firewood now and say 'I'll fix that fence when the weather gets a bit better'. This time next year the fence still won't be sorted.

I'd be very suspicious about this. He's doing you over and won't repair the fence. I'm nearly 100% sure he's using this opportunity to scan around your house for a burglary session before Christmas. I'd take no chances. Whilst he's dealing with the tree, catch him unaware and give him a mighty kick and tell him to fcuk off with his fake benevolence. Video tape the whole thing.a

It must be a primeval thing in men designed to protect themselves. The poor auld cavemen eventually caught on that Raquel Welch lying at the cave entrance in a fur bikini was designed to lure them in so they could be relieved of their precious goods!

If I was you, I'd grab that neighbour and kiss him o n the cheeks- front and rear!
If you think he is a  genuine type of fella, you be mad not to take up his offer.
I'm not thinking of the value of the timber here or even the cost of repairing the fence; getting someone to remove the stump would be my priority.
Most lads who are anyways handy with a chainsaw could ring a fallen tree without a bother but digging out a stump and disposing of it is another matter entirely. There would be far more work doing that than there would be in cutting up the tree itself.
If the going rate for logs is £50 a tonne, delivered and split, I don't see how he can gain anything from taking you tree and all that goes with it.
I don't know either you or your neighbour but I'd bet that he is a sound man. He'd realise that not keeping his end of the bargain would lead to a falling out.
If you feel he knows what he's doing, let him fire ahead.

Good call on the stumps! I cut down 15 trees in my garden when I moved in 8 years ago. No probs cutting and disposing but the stumps were a nightmare - buried under walls and fences and all sorts! Still have half a dozen to get rid off. I've been battering at them with an axe for years!

i grew up with the lad so id be mightily p1ssed off if i thought hed be out to get a claim outta me.  But it is a concern in this day and age that people are so suspicious to think that a neighbour might be out to shaft them.
The fact that the tree has falled and taken a lot of the stump with it shouldnt be much difficulty in taking a chainsaw to it, the dangerous part is done as the tree is down. Plus the lad can drive a JCB so im sure that will take the stump out easily enough.
As for the fence i couldnt care less about him replacing it he offered so i will let him at it. Weather still a bit shit so not sure if it will be cleared by Christmas at this rate

Probably do the job when he's not there and call into the missus for 'cups of tea'.
