Title: John Heslin 2-16
Post by: Dinny Breen on September 29, 2013, 05:03:26 PM
I knew he was good but feck me and Garrycastle wouldn't be a bad team

Westmeath SFC Semi Final FT - Garrycastle 5-9 St Lomans 2-19 - John Heslin scored 2-16 for Lomans to win game

Anyone know the breakdown, Gerry or Croí?

Was this without extra time? That's uncommon scoring in 60 minutes.

They need Mickey Harte down in the midlands.

He is a serious talent , Heslin. Declan Rowley is over Lomans, former Longford manager. Managed my own club for a few years.

Steve Austin once scored 3-16, though.

14 frees. But some of them were from crazy positions. Lomans were 1 up in injury time. Garrycastle won a penalty which Gary Dolan scored. Lomans won the kickout, long ball in and Heslin fisted it to the net. Dessie played no part.
Shamrocks and Tyrrellspass drew the other semi.

Thats Matt Connor type scoring no matter the position, never even heard of a player scoring so much in a serious championship game, foreby it coming from a midfielder, Garrycastle came out of leinster a few yrs ago too.

worryingly 3 point only came from the forwards

Heslin played full forward, as he always does at club level.

It's mainly like that in any club, one free scoring forward and 2/3 or more other regular scorers.

Couldn't make it, nearly choked on my twitter feed when I saw it coming in. Shamrocks did well to get another day out by all accounts, 2-5 to 3 points down at ht.

QuoteDeclan Rowley is over Lomans, former Longford manager

Being a pernickety Pete here but Rowley hasn't managed Longford. He managed Laytrum. He is from Longford in fairness.

2-16 in a 60 minute game is savage stuff - irregardless of the fact that 0-14 came from frees.

My bad, he was assistant manager with Longford for a spell though.

2-16 would practically win every game. Epic way to finish by Heslin with a goal in the last minute.

Didn't Heslin play Aussie Rules a few years ago?

Yeah he was with Richmond. For about 8/9 months in total. Cited homesickness. I don't think he has the mobility for top level midfield. He is so hard marked at the edge of the square though. And his free taking is sublime.

Plays midfield with UCD as well. It was just as well he came back from the AFL last year or Westmeath wouldn't be playing Div 1 next year.

2-16 appears brilliant but only 2-2 was from play.  You would have to question the sense of the defenders who kept giving away so many scoreable frees.

I doubt they were all "scorable" nrico, as shark said "crazy positions", Heslin has a savage range and would be very accurate outside the scoring zone.

I would agree he doesn't have the mobility or work rate for midfield. Would love to see what he could do at centre forward.

Would the fact that he scored them not make them scoreable?

For him yes, but not perhaps for the majority of free takers. You can question defenders for giving away frees in front of the posts but if a man is kicking frees from all angles and distances (as has been suggested) then there is less blame. I'd be more concerned that they conceded 5 goals and only got 3 points from other players.

F me nrico, you couldn't have been impressed with maurice fitz' sidelines etc by that logic.

2-16 is a brilliant haul for a 1-point tight SFC semi v Garrycastle

he has the making of a special midfielder, along with Bredan murphy of Carlow, what way would these lads be talked about if they were midfield for Kerry or Dublin. Will probably slog on with their respect counites not getting the recognition for their ability that they would if on bigger teams, just like Seamus O`Hanlon (Louth), Seamie O`Neill (Roscommon) etc, John Galvin only came to light has he overshadowed Darragh O`Se in 2 munster finals even though Limerick were beat, now with the seeded draw he wouldn't even have been hear off.
