Co Laois bog body is world's oldest
New tests on the remains of a preserved body found in a Co Laois bog have revealed that it is the oldest bog body ever discovered in the world.
The body was found by a Bord na Móna worker milling peat in 2011.
It was initially believed that the remains were those of a young female which were around 2,500 years old.
However, a series of recent tests have revealed that it is the body of a male, which dates back as far as 2000 BC.
The chemical makeup of bogs can preserve human bodies for thousands of years.
Older bog bodies have been discovered elsewhere but none as mummified or as well preserved as this example.
Archaelogists said the body which is believed to be a member of historic royalty, was almost certainly put to the sword by his own people. The body is missing its head, which has never been recovered.

His head is missing but I bet he was a good looking b**tard...
Typical of a Laois lad to lose his head when the spotlight's on.

Sure us Mayo lads had sophistocated farming 1,000 years before that lad managed to get burried.
It said on the news that he was a leader who had failed in people in some way.
The modern equivalent might be beheading Bertie and burying him in a bog.
If this practice became widespread, some football managers might have to watch out.
There was no beheading, I ripped his head off with me bare hands!

This certainly is a temptation when you encounter Laois people.

We certainly are good at winding up Nordies and Armagh folk in particular...

Pretty sure that was back when you were being ruled by Queen Maeb. Only when the uncivilised Mayo folk are lead by strong Roscommon leadership do they get anywhere.

I'm pretty sure that you are a couple of thousand years out there.

Where did they get? Did they win the All Ireland then?

When we're talking about semi-mythical folklore I've got a bit of leeway on this one.
Point two - Mayo's club scene is lead by a Roscommon club. Even if you want to wrongly suggest they're a Mayo club it was a fine Strokestown man who managed them to the Mayo title.
Any more questions should centre around the headless Laois king.

:D :D ???
Why are they always thought to be royalty, how do they know this?
He was really the All Ireland hide and seek champion for that year. :)

STFU.
Did I hear that boglad had a picture of a young Debbie Magee in his clutched hand?
He was either off his head on peat or after playing a tournament match for s set of clay pipes between Camross and Birr and lost the head.
I didn't think there was anyone around 4,000 years ago but there you have it, the first man in Ireland was a Laois man.
