Title: Near miss!!
Post by: Milltown Row2 on June 02, 2013, 07:38:17 PM
Was nearly in a bad accident today on way to a match, was travelling towards Sandyknowles on the M2 to meet cousin to head on down to Ahoghill, was doing about 70 up that steep part before Sandyknowles turn off and it was as if the lorry in front just stopped, in hindsight he was probably only doing about 20 miles an hour and I was charging straight into the back of it.

I slammed the breaks and pulled to the right to avoid it, while doing that the Golf in the next lane just avoided me a by a whisker same time I'm slamming beaks pulling back into the lane with lorry!!! was mental never felt so out of control in my life. If I had have touched either vehicle there would have been a serious accident on the motorway.

Will be driving with due care from now on, drove up to girls who I just avoided and said sorry but they gave off to me and rightly so, as I was at fault, totaly. I near shit myself :(

Remember one day having a near miss going to work in belfast myself, by the time i was in at work i was white as a sheet, had to go home early, think i suffered shock. It takes a near miss to get  a eye opener about driving carefully

I have done similar. As I didn't see brake lights the morning head didn't trigger that the vehicle was almost stationary so like you I went steaming on ahead until it was almost too late!

it's even worse when you're in the other car. have had one or two near misses on one particular stretch - road between moneymore/destermartin and tobermore. Cars love overtaking though there are a couple of brows that catch people out. not so much fun when theyre coming straight at you. always wary about that as some **** did similar to an aunt of mine and forced her off the road and down into a field, luckily survived with minor enough injuries.

Had two near misses over the last ten years. One where I didn't notice the traffic stopped on the N2 ahead of me. Nearly went 70mph into the back of them. Left an inch of rubber on the road, burnt rubber smoke in the air. Next one was only last week. Just didn't stop on the line at a T-junction and nearly had the nose taken off me. Nearly had a heart attack.

I'd have to put them down to lack of sleep as I'm the worst in the world for working late and going in the morning 10 minutes after rolling out of bed with no breakfast. I know its bad but I'm the sort of ejit who puts work ahead of everything else.

Glad to hear you got away with that one MR2. We now have one safer driver on the road.

The problem with cars is that until you've either had a near miss or a brush with the law then you think you are invincible. Whilst cars are becoming safer, they can still cause a lot of damage.

I drove straight through the express lane barrier at the toll bridge in Portlaoise.

Luckily it was only made of soft foam.

A few weeks ago I drove clean through a junction heading to a wedding. The missus was yapping that we were gonna be late etc. etc. and with her in my ear and putting the foot down on a back road I was past the line at the T junction before I knew it. If a car had been passing it would have been carnage. The whole way through the wedding service I kept thinking about it and the real possibility that our wanes could have lost their parents at that point! :-[

Yeah it really is a shit one, the look on those girls faces as I tried to gain control of a Santa Fe!! Slamming brakes and trying to get control back was madness. I was thinking had I hit them and caused injury or worse is whats really annoying me

I think i've felt exactly how you were feeling today.
we were heading home 'countrybound' on m1 one day and heading towards one of the slip-ON's to the motorway but i was in fast lane and just thought i'd look down to change radio station, suddenly my female passenger shouts WATCH and within a second all traffic was slowed from 70 til about 20MPH and i knew i couldnt get stopped or i was going to hit the car in front with an almighty force.
So in that split second, without even looking in any mirrors, i knew there was only one place i could go and that was left.
Now, til this day i will always be thankful, but our lives were saved only by the alertness of a lorry driver in the slow lane just slightly behind us, who either predicted a build up of traffic ahead as we approached or he could see the road ahead better than us but he slowed down giving me the space to get into, i didnt even have time to signal , i just had to go for it.
i was in big shock for a bit and pulled over a mile down the road and signalled my appreciation to the lorry driver, he knew i think that he had saved a potential motorway disaster situation !
i said some prayers that night !

Is the use of 'countrybound' in relation to motorways a Norn Iron thing?  Always sounds a bit odd to me.

Never heard it said before, the Dubs however say "heading down the country".

I think country folk would say, "heading West", "heading North", "heading East", "heading South" or use "up to", "across to", "down to", "back to" every city and town seems to have it's own one and it seems to pay no attention to direction.

In Castlebar I used remember it to be "up to Dublin", "up to Galway", "up to Donegal", "down to Cork", "across to/back to Westport", "up to Ballina", "over to Kiltimagh", "up to Belfast", "out to Bohola", "out to Manulla", "out to Islandeady", "across to Roscommon", "back to Achill", "back to Louisburgh", "across to Athlone", "out to Pontoon, "out to Balla", "in to town".

I find Dubs don't really know where anywhere is once they pass the Red Cow.
Had a friend of the wife tell me one day Clonmel was just outside Naas.
I was also asked once if Laois was anywhere near Portlaoise.

Don't see the problem with that. One of the lanes is heading towards the country and the other is heading towards the city.
The westbound traffic on the M1 could be going to the cities of Lisburn or Armagh  ;D

Cities are in the eye of the beholder. People in San Jose (population 984,000) talk about going up to "the city" meaning San Francisco (population 825,863).

Exactly, in Ireland we refer to the likes of Castlebar and Ballina as towns, American tourists call them "cities" and an English girl at work recently told me her father visited the "fishing village of Ballina".

and in Australia, 'city' means what most people would call 'suburb'. If you are in greater Perth and they are looking for your city on an address form, they want you to put down 'Subiaco', or 'Mount Hawthorne' etc

Now, what were we talking about??!

Cars are dangerous, of that there is no doubt but drivers are a lot more dangerous.  I have been a competitive rally driver for over 10 years with a bit of experience. I have my fair share of crystal but have also been through my fair share of hedges. The one thing I can say is that the steering wheel will get you out of a lot more trouble than the brake peddle. The average drivers instinct is to slam on the brakes, this is often where it goes wrong.

The one thing you need is awareness of what is ahead, use your eyes. Driving along thinking about a match or some bit of fluff will get you in trouble. If everyone concentrated on what they were doing there would be very few accidents.

Guilty on both counts ;)

Was it a camogie match you were refereeing?

Yeah its can also be that feeling you get when you arrive somewhere after a decent journey and you can remember nothing about the drive there just in a total different world.

Concentration is definitely key

Had a scary one myself there last September. Leaving the home place back for Newport. I was toddling along at 100km/h on a bog road, which is signposted as 100. There is a bit of subsidence though, it being a bog road. Anyway, I reached for the radio to tune in BBC Radio5 as Liverpool were playing Arsenal at the time, and as I did, the car hit one of them little bumps. I hit them 1,000,000 a year I'd say, but this time, because of the alignment of eyes off the road, one hand on the wheel, and other hand on radio, I completely lost it. Steering wheel was ripped from my hand, and I couldn't get it back. I braked, wrestled with the wheel etc, but it was just like the OP said, complete powerlessness. Car crossed the dividing line, hit the verge, flipped up in the air, did a 270 degree spin and ended up back facing Ferbane , standing up sideways on the passenger side. The passanger window was exploded, and I was hanging sideways by my seatbelt. I had to open the driver side door (amazingly heavy when gravity is against you) and climb out , Dukes of Hazzard style.

I gave thanks that day I'll tell you.

1 - No car coming against me. I'd have killed us both.
2 - I was on my own in my car, not child or wife to injure. My wife would have been showered with glass at best.
3 - No injuries to me because I had my seatbelt on. If seatbelt was off, I'd not be typing this.
4 - I came to rest about 4 foot from a telephone pole. If I'd hit that, possibly the same as point 3.

Unbelieveably, because the land is good and soft around home, the sum total of damage to the car was €2000 for two panels, a passenger window and a bit of tipping and tapping here and there.

Scary shit though, and I know how lucky I am. Suffice to say, lesson learned re. respecting the power of a car going at even that speed. Because modern cars are so comfy and solid on the road, you forget you are essentially in charge of a lethal weapon going at 60mph or more.

So many things went your way, on any given day you might have had a different outcome!! Scary stuff

I drove straight through the express lane barrier at the toll bridge in Portlaoise.

Luckily it was only made of soft foam.

Happened to a fella I know, it didn't lift in time. Nobody behind him so he backed up and went up to the window to explain. Your one didn't give a monkeys, said it happens at least a couple of times a day and on he went.

I thought I was fucked.I was sure the car would be a write off, its amazing the amount of stuff can go through your head in a split second. It came down just as I was coming up to it.  Slammed on the breaks but was too near to stop. Went straight through it, was so relieved when I realised it was only soft material.

July 2009 I was a front seat passenger in a car with my friend driving and another friend in the back.

Driving back to Dublin from Clonmel at around 12pm the following day after a birthday party the night before.

We were in great humour discussing the banter the night before. My friend was tipping along nicely, nothing crazy but a bit too fast with not knowing the roads. Doing about 100km on a fairly decent road, secondary or could have been a primary.

As we get to the crest of the hill, my mate turns to me a goes..here, pull my finger...obviously had a stinker lined up.  As get over the crest, big curve to the left, friends just shouts..f*****ck as there is no way he was going to make it.Car kept going straight, crossed the road and went between 2 huge black and amber chevron signs (no more than the width of a car) hits and embankment and we're airborn for a good 2-3 seconds before nosediving into a ditch which was about 20 metres below the road. Airbags go off, front of the car in on top of us in the front.

Still remember the white power and ringing in the ears from the airbag. Engine smoking big time at this stage, driver and friend were dazed and frozen. I just started roaring at them to get out of the car...expecting a Hollywood engine explosion at any moment. Had to climb out the back side window and then up the hill to the road. I just lay down on the grass for about 20 minutes thanking God. Car was in bits. If didn't have belts on or met a car coming around a corner or hit one of the chevron signs we were toast.

So basically, pull my finger can kill.

Aye, a good guinness fart can blind you at close quarters.

That aside, you were very lucky.
