Post by: rodney trotter on March 27, 2013, 08:22:51 PM

Great news, nice to have it officially confirmed.

I'll be there, 8th time in 10 years, possibly my last as the 4 day drinking session takes its toll as the years pass.

Have 5 big stadium gigs and this in 6 consecutive weeks in June/July. Surely the weather will have picked up by then?!!??

Yeah whopefully weather is decent by then alright. Weather for Glastonbury has been hit and miss, lot of wash outs. Be great to experience it though, always wanted to go over.. Should be some weekend!

Lol. I honestly don't know how they can be arsed at their age, although Mick would put a man half a third of his age to shame with his fitness levels.

They'd be a big favourite of mine as well. The one time I saw them live (74/75) I couldn't say they were shite (too young), but I do know they were the worst of the three bands I heard live that year.

Slade were the best. I kid you not!!

Anyways if you've never seen them live you'd better go as I'd say, this'll be "The Last Time". :)

Glastonbury will be no worse than Slane was in 2007 during the last Stones appearance in Ireland,a real muck heap!

Have had the privilege of seeing the band live 6 times, both slane gigs (82 and 07,and they were the first really huge act to play Slane and arguably put the venue on the map) and also when they played the then Point Depot 10 years ago,and also twice at Wembley and once at Twickenham. All unforgettable experiences!

My fav band released their first album in 1972 having used the Stones' mobile recording studio that they used to record 'Exile on Main Street'. The artisitic one in said Irish band had a great idea of having a concertina shaped album cover with little holes in it. Easy today but back in 1972 this caused all sorts of problems.

The Stones were signed to the same record group at the time and when they wanted to release 'Sticky Fingers' - the album with the zipper on it - the record company insisted that  they pay for this themselves but were happy to fund the cost of the Irish group concept design.

When Jagger heard this he went ballistic. "How can a c**k-a-mamy Irish group of paddies release that crock of shit with that cover and we have to pay for ours" he whinged.

Never forgave the bastard and so, like Duncan Bannityne, I'm Oot.

Did Jagger say that? Doubt he feels like that now as he frequently proclaims his love for Ireland, with friends here (albeit aristocratic like the Guinness family,Mountcharles etc). Also Richards wanted to pull the Slane concert after an IRA bomb in London a few weeks before, and it wax Jagger's threat to dissolve the band in that case, that ensured concert would go ahead etc. Also Jagger's father taught in Strawberry Hill a catholic teacher training college in Twickenham with strong Irish links.

Met Bill Wyman at Derry Jazz Festival in 2010.Great bloke, signed his books and CDs for me,but strangely he was extremely reluctant to sign a Rolling Stones T SHirt, though he relented in the end,and even said he doesn't normally autograph Stones stuff.

Sen? What does that mean or how is it defined?

In 1982 when they played at Slane the Stones were 8 years past their recording peak in my opinion at any rate. There are few bands that have ever been able to put together four consecutive studio albums of the quality of Beggars Banquet/Let It Bleed/Sticky Fingers and Exile, the latter of which was the real slow burn masterpiece of the lot, again in my opinion. Haven't seen them since Slane 82 and no desire either to tell the truth, all their recordings since then have been pale shadows of the 68 to 72 years. Best recording I've heard in that time was Plundered my Soul which never made it on to Exile. They really have morphed into their own Tribute band and it's an act of some commercial brilliance that they pulled that one off. If I want to gig to tales of underage love and sex and bringing down the establishment I'll look for some up and comers rather than a bunch of superannuated 70 year olds. When they were good, they were bloody great mind.

I thought it was underwhelming. The Boss from a few years ago was the benchmark in my eyes.

Yeah, these lads are either side of 70 and they look it. I was semi embarrassed watching it. They have allot of session players with them covering up the holes. In fact it looks like none of the original members were playing anything. On the other hand you have to admire the lasting power in these guys. They are surely not still in it for the money? They (naturally) look wrecked though!

I always wanted to go to a stones gig however having watched them last night it seems I missed the boat. They sounded terrible. Just wondering does tony f think the stones are a global brand  ;)

Of course they're a global brand.Jagger has always said that concert performance is their forte, and I reckon they can still hack it in that regard.

I thought the Stones performed very well for a bunch of near 70 year olds.Saw Kenny Rodgers in Belfast a few years ago (tickets won,I certainly wouldnt pay for them) and thought his performance was as plastic as his face.

Yeah, session musicians were doing most of the playing IMO, but I suppose it wasn't a bad gig for a bunch of 70 year olds, Jagger is painfully thin, needs a good feed of new spuds and butter into him.

Jagger has a 28 inch waist, maintained since his teenage days. His ould fella was PE Lecturer at St Mary's College Stawberry Hill, London, and has undoubtedly influenced his son and probably generations of GAA players too.

Just back from Glasto and Kenny Rogers was highlight of wkend! Seriously! On a roasting hot Sunday afternoon when everyone was getting bit tired/hungover he had the crowd in the palm of his hand! Think every Irish Glasto tourist was there!

Was there myself. Must say Kenny was the man. Crowd got bigger and bigger by every song and by the encore everyone was up singing and dancing. Fair play to the fella.  Him and Mumford were my 2 picks. Probably cos they're the only 2 that i really remember.

Seen Django Django do a secret set on Thurs eve. Lead guy is a Derry man, really got the crowd going. Wouldn't necessarily be my type of music but his stage presence impressed me. Plus it was only Thurs so my brain was operating at around 80% at that stage. The less said about Friday and Saturday the better.
