Title: C-Section
Post by: BennyHarp on March 17, 2013, 12:54:22 AM
So, my Wife is having our first born by c-section on Wednesday after it was clear it is in breach and couldn't be turned! I know this is a fairly routine operation these days but I'm still a bit worried! Any advice fellas on what to do on the day and the days after?

What the fcuk are you supposed to do?!  ;D Our 3rd was by section and there is no getting round the fact that it is fairly major as it involves cutting through abdominal muscles. You need to be on hand to help out as the missus will be very sore for a good while and will need to be careful with lifting the baby etc as apparently the stitches can burst ages after the nipper is born.

Congratulations by the way. You'll be grand.

This may sound crass, but that's not the intention at all.

I know three couples who have decisively gone the c section route just to avoid the vagina damage. Things should be grand. Congratulations!

She'll be very sore for a while and lifting things will be a problem. She's also not supposed to drive a car for 6 weeks, sudden braking would be a problem. Just be on hand to help her, that's about it. Congrats!

what?? Benny has already done the vagina damage.

my first child was a section. but it wasn't planned. one minute we were doing the breathing and the pushing the next thing i was standing there on my own as everything i had was being rallied down the corridor to the operating theater. they made me tea and toast... after that i was taken down to see my wife i wouldn't have known her. she was really in bad shape. then the good bit. they took me to children's intensive care and asked me to try and pick my own child. there were about 10 so thinking mine wasn't too long born i picked the smallest one. i couldn't believe it when she says no no this is your over here. my eldest son was the full of the little glass cot. i couldn't believe it. 11lb monster.
we had all the plans for breast feeding etc.. but Mrs lawn simply wasn't fit after what she'd been through. thankfully after a few days she was back to normal.
Benny you have the advantage of a planned section so you wont have any of the trauma i/we had but it is VERY worrying.. the tea and toast helps. the very best of luck and congrats

At least you've time to worry about it. My second was born in an emergency C section 20 mins after the doc decided we need to deliver 3 months early!

Missus had a C-section 6 months ago & has been said before it is major surgery and she will be very sore for the first few days after it but you can actually recover from it quickly enough, it's important to tell her not to milk it.

3 born by c section, she will be sore and tender for a good few weeks after it like the lads have said.  The other thing I would say,and it may not be an issue for you, is that you are limited to the amount of kids you can have.  We wanted at least 1 more but the doctors wouldn't let us.

Ha Ha. That's true what Minder says.

And with modern surgery, doctors actually believe that females are best not to lie down after 2 or 3 days, and moving around helps circulation and aids recovery.

So get her to ensure that housework is restarted after a few days. If you love her that is.

Good luck with it lad!

Good luck BennyHarp.

Both my kids were born by Cesarean, and it does take longer to recover than the natural method of child birth.

No ill effect on my kids either, except every time they leave the house they climb out through the side window. And they always get out of the car through the sunroof.

Our twins were born by section. Found the whole thing fascinating. They allowed me to watch where the action was taking place.

Afterwards she'll be rightly sore for a couple of weeks. Do everything you can for her. She'll be ready for romancing at about 4 weeks.

Get a second opinion, we did and number 4 arrived safely via section last October. That said we where told that 4 was def the limit.

A lot will depend on how quick a healer your other half is. Luckily herself was back on her feet after a week with each of ours.

But I ve had a bellyfill of Bovine CSs over the years, including siamese twins, that no local vet had ever seen before.

In normal circumstances we could have gone for another but Mrs BC had an added blood clotting problem so surgery would be very dangerous.

My Mother In Law had 6 all be section so thats the first I heard of limits.
Also I have had friends who's baby was in breech and were able to get him turned in the womb and deliver naturally. It was sore on the woman but she preferred to go that route.
My Mrs had a section for the last wee lad - he was over 10lbs and they reckoned it would have been dangerous so we went along with it. As many have said its a slow recovery but you'll hardly notice it. Big difference was the time you'll have with the child right after your Wife is finished surgery - normally she would have the baby but you'll get it while she recovers. Most women will get sick from the anesthetic too.
there is also the option after a section to go back natural for the next one - takes a bit of work but it is done all the time. Called V-Back. A lot of doctors and mid-wives specialize in helping women go back that way.

Good luck tomorrow Benny hope it all goes well

both my kids were born by c-section, 1st one was an emergency one and second was like yours a planned one because of the circumstances. Your Missus will be very sore for a few weeks as the lads here have said, so you will have to step up to the plate. it will be all over in 20 mins, so no sitting about for hours and hours or even days. the one advantage of the c-section is that the child is lifted straight out so the child cant really get stressed out and comes out looking perfect as opposed to a normal birth where they can come out a bit battered, bruised and marked.

I have two girls both C-sectioned. First was an emergency, by the infamous Mr Neary. We were just delighted everything turned out ok. I was in the theater for it but the action was screened off, just there to support my wife. The bonus for me was being brought down to give the new born her her first feed,  by bottle of course  :)

The second was born in a different hospital and they did a c-section because they could not get hold of the notes from the first one. At the height of the Mr Neary affair.

Like everyone else says, long recovery time and very sore. I think my wife got a bit of a liking for the morphine after hers. Loved pushing that little wristwatch style button.

All turned out well though.

The best of luck BennyHarp...hope all goes well.

My first was born c section, the doctor cut her and popped the head out and said to me "what do you think of that" and there was the baby's head sticking out of her belly and nothing else...was like something out of Mars Attacks. Then for our second it was a planned c section too but the wife's water broke at 2:15am and it was 4:30am before i woke up as i climb in beside the daughter for another few hours sleep as our bed was wet, by the time i got her to hospital the midwife said to the wife you're not having no c section love...the heads hanging out of ya love...disaster, but had it naturally. The blurt was never the same.

Benny, our third was breach and was born by c-section. It's a completely different experience than the natural birth and it is worrying no doubt, but just remember how many of these c-sections are done these days. Although it's major surgery, it's so common now it's like getting the appendix out (ok, a bit bigger than that but the same principle). It's over in a few minutes and when it is you'll think "what was I worrying about".
They days after will be a bit tricky as your wife wont be supposed to pick the child up or drive or do anything strenuous, but those are all just practicalities. A few weeks and she'll be flying.

We had our 4th and 5th by section too (twins) but for altogether different reasons as there were pregnancy complications and they had to be delivered 10 weeks premature. Even then though, the section itself was straightforward...even if daunting with about 6 consultants and a dozen nurses all in the room. It was difficult as the health of the kids was at risk and was done in an emergency so the sheer panic was more around will the kids survive. thankfully all went well and we've now got 2 7 month old twin boys. So what I'm trying to say is that yes it is worrying but even in extreme circumstances its straightforward and relatively routine.

It'll all be fine and congrats on the new arrival.

Is it a boy or a girl? Thankfully I didn't say the Dictator line for the same question?

My wife had 4 sections with only the 1st not planned.
Her recovery each time was very fast and no mention of any limits on having any more.

I think I'll take things into my 'own hands' and never let on.  8)

The mrs had 2 of these, first one emergency, the second was planned. Recovery thwarted by bad infection around the cut open area. Bastird doctors not cleaning hands or tools for the job, both sections I might add. This seriously f@cked things up for about 7 weeks, the mrs was in bad shape and had to get the wound area regularly cleaned and regular different types of antibiotics etc. If the infection went untreated could result in removal of part of the stomach and could also kill. So watch out for this, a bad smell with bad looking puss is bad news. Bedroom antics will also be ruled out for a fair while, at least it was with me >:(
Was left on my own in the maternity ward with a roaring wee one for 7 hours as the mrs lost a lot of blood during the first section and remained in intensive care. It is a worrying experience and the second time around I seen a lot of blood and guts, that I was not meant to see.
I hope all goes well for you.

First born, wee lad, was emergency C Section just after 12 at night after a hectice 12 hour labour during that day. Wee lad was very reluctant to come out and actually suffered some cuts to the head from a vacum they tried to use at one stage, not happy memories. Herself ended up out cold for the C-section, barely woke up after it just to know if everything was ok and what we had. She slept for the night and the wee lad was taken to special care, spent about 4 days in it cause of the cuts on the head. He was grand after a day or so but they kept him in to be sure.

The seond born, a girl, was a scheduled C section due to the problems of the first. Went very smoothly and was nothing compared to the first.

Herself will be sore for sure but my missus was determined to get mobile as soon as possible and back on her feet, it definately helped in her recovery and she was back on her feet fairly quick but everyone will be different.

Hopefully you know the good news now and all went as it should.

I'll put ye out of your misery Dougal, I'm happy to report that my wife had a healthy 6lb 12oz wee boy this morning. Apart from a very scary 30 or so seconds when he first came out when he had to be resuscitated, everything went like clockwork. Brilliant newS. Did they make you the tea and toast after the event. When my second lad was born the cord was round his neck. That and his broad shoulders made his birth a scary experience. He was blue/grey when they finally prised him out. He's almost 18 now a county minor and a great lad. Here's hoping the same for Benny junior. As Tony says get some sleep

Congrats Benny. My partner is expecting our third in June (that will be three under 2yrs and 4 months) so I will join the other lads in wishing you well in your last nights full sleep. I forget what it like to have a lie on or what a pub looks like but wouldn't change it for the world. My wee two year old can already kick the ball out of his hands into my arms from across the room. Would do your heart good!
