In fact one would need to know how much - length wise - the landmower cut, this variable would be vital in giving and accurate answer.

I heard Peter McKenna mentioning on Morning Ireland the other morning that it was an eight mile walk. It seemed an awful lot, but it turns out he's about right.

The dimensions of the pitch are given as 144.5 x 88 metres. There's about another 3 metres of grass beyond the pitch lines all around, so say 147.5 x 91 metres. Let's say the mower is a metre wide – looks about right from the picture above.

So the width of 91 metres has to be traversed 148 times. That's a walk of 13.5 Km or 8.4 miles – nearly as much as I do in a season of running behind the sofa whenever Martin Carney comes on.

Next question:
What is the fastest field game in the world?

Is it jai alai - the crack where the player has a basket on his arm.  I saw it in florida once when i was at a casino.  Didnt understand it but the ball was travelling quick.

the standard answer is Lacrosse but the ball spends so much time in the Crosse the over all speed average would be fairly low hopefully  it the much better  'Intercrosse'  that takes the title , not in my case of course

Does Ice Hockey count as a sort of a frozen field? If so, surely Ice Hockey.

And what is the fastest game measured in? Speed the ball travels, or speed the players travel, or wha?

Hurling I always thought?

I'm guessing because Hardy asked the question, the answer isn't 'Hurling' :D

As AZ says, sorry, Seanie, but if you've ever seen QI, this is the  moment when the big hooter goes "ahooooogah ... ahoooogah".

I'm not saying it's not hurling. If I take the Stephen Fry role, I'd say it's a case of "we don't know" or  "there's no answer".

1. How do you define "fastest" (again as posed by AZ) and how do you define "field" and how do you define "game", to eliminate horse racing or motor racing?
2. Who measured it, what did they measure and when?

Just having a poke at the ould guff I'm sick of hearing down this way - "fastest field game in de world, boy". I could leave it at that if it wasn't usually followed with "Football? If I had me way, I'd puncture every football in de county, boy".

A field sport is surely defined to be one played on grass

So horse racing it is then? Or Polo at worst?
