Title: Coastguards are searching for a baby in Belfast harbour.
Post by: oisinog on May 09, 2012, 09:14:49 PM
Coastguards are searching for a baby in Belfast harbour.

The child and a woman went into the water from a ferry this evening. The woman has been rescued.

Lifeboats and helicopters are involved in the search operation.

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland ambulance service said they treated the casualty.

"She had been in the water for a while so you can understand that with the coldness of the water she would have been hypothermic," he said.

She is being cared for in hospital.

Sources suggested the baby is just days old.

It is believed the infant and woman fell from a Stena ferry in Belfast Lough, close to Holywood, Co Down.

Prayers are need that this child is found

Terribly sad story. Will be a big HSENI enquiry for that.

All sounds a wee bit suspect but we'll see. Weather today won't be helpful.

It's a very sad story, but all the indications are that there never was a baby. The emergency services had no option other than to act on the information they were given, and it's fairly clear that the woman who was rescued from the water had issues.

It's a real pity of the woman.

A search of Belfast Lough is continuing after reports that a baby fell overboard from a ferry - however authorities now say they are not in a position to confirm that a child is missingThe woman was rescued from the water shortly after the alarm was raised. She is now in a stable condition at the Royal Victoria Hospital..

A major search operation continued this morning for the missing baby.

As yet there has been no sign of the child and police now say they  are unable to confirm that a child is missing.

The search of a section of Belfast Lough is ongoing

Those boats are full of CCTV so should not be hard to confirm. Fingers crossed there was no child.

Very callous haranguerer, they girl has obviously got mental problems.  How do you know she hasn't recentlyt lost a child and was delusional with grief.  We don't know sort of the circumstances but this sort of shite is one of the reasons why Ireland has one of the highest suicide rates among young people in the world.

After 18 hours it becomes a body recovery exercise and this is then handed over to the PSNI

If she is found to have serious mental issues and is deemed not responsible for her actions, then fair enough. They would have to be quite severe for her not to understand the trouble she was going to cause, not to mention all the other lives she was endangering however, and if she is found to have minimal mental disorder (theres obv some given she jumped off a boat), then she should face some consequences.

Attitudes in Ireland to stuff like this is f**k all to do with the high suicide rate amongst young people however. If you want to see callous, try here:

People encouraging others to commit suicide. Pretty widespread across the world, but I've never heard of it happening in Ireland, so its not like we 'just dont understand' like other nations.

Too right bcb1. Really bugs me the way those with psychiatric problems are torn to shreds without a thought given to the absolute hell they could be going through personally. If it turns out this woman is unwell surely we should be thankful that a young child hasn't lost their life rather than sharpening the knives and calling for the mob.

+1

With all the money that is wasted in this part of the world, surely a troubled soul rescued and no baby to have been harmed would be the best outcome all round. Hopefully she gets the help she needs if the rumour mill is to be believed.

Haranguerer, the way your post came across to me was like the old attitude towards people with mental health problems.  I have seen at first hand the effects this attitude has and it is diabolical.  As a result of young people who have problems then hide them which culminates in them committing suicide.  We know nothing of this womens situation yet but it would not be a huge jump to suggest that she has perhaps lost a child and is tramautised given the nature of the events.  If not then I agree she should be walloped hard by the law.

Baby did not fall from ferry into Belfast Lough

A massive search and rescue operation was launched on Wednesday evening following reports that a baby was in the water.

The search was stood down by the Coastguard on Thursday afternoon.

A woman was rescued from the lough after she fell overboard from the Stena Line vessel.

She was treated for hypothermia in the Royal Victoria Hospital where she is in a stable condition.

A police spokesperson said the search had been called off "after enquiries with the 37-year-old woman and her family".

The alarm was raised at 18:10 BST on Wednesday, as the ferry arrived from Cairnryan in Scotland and was preparing to dock at Belfast Harbour.

The woman was recovered from the water 15 minutes later.

It turns out it was from eye witness reports. Not a report from the woman.

It seems after speaking to her and her family they confirmed there was no baby

Apparently the woman had had a 'phantom' pregnancy. A right fruit and nut case by all accounts.

WTF! Do you seriously believe it's ok to refer to people with mental health issues as fruit and nut cases? That woman clearly has problems and could easily have died the other day. Do you also think it'd be ok to refer to someone with cancer using the similar derogatory language?

Yes I do. What is wrong with the description?

Other common terms in my personal repetoire are as follows:

Bollix - awkward person
Tart - bird that dates everyone except me
Cunto - friendly awkward person
Woolly woofter - uphill gardener
etc etc

Not a very Christian attitude for someone so keen to defend the Church on another thread. I echo omagh_gael's comment - you wouldn't make similar remarks about someone with a physical illness.

You obviously have very little knowledge or experience of what it is like to have a mental illness to demonstrate such ignorance and, as maguire mentioned, hypocrysy. I work in the field of mental health and learning disability and have witnessed the devastation psychiatric illnesses can have on an individual, as well as their loved ones, and feel that your views are extremely disrespecful and uncalled for. Rant over.
