Title: The summer thread.
Post by: Puckoon on April 18, 2011, 09:13:40 PM
Well ladies and gentlemen - she's just around the corner. Summer - the best time of the year.

Time to throw the golf sticks in the boot and keep them there til late november, so they can be ready at a moments notice that the boss is leaving the office.

Time to pack away the snow boots, the scarves and wolly hats - and the big heavy jackets.

Time to take the ice scrapper of the floor of the passenger seat and back into the boot where it belongs.

Time to get the grill scrapped down and ready for another 5 months of charring marinades and juicy steaks. Or just buy a new one  ;D.

Time to get the fridge re-stocked with plenty of beer and stuff for the cocktails in the summer evenings. Maybe even time to devote an entire fridge to beverages.

Time to get the money on Tyrone for the AISFC, get the trips to the lake organized - maybe a new speedo and plenty of suncream.

Bring it on.

Summer is class. Long days, Championship Sundays, fresh cut grass, Championship Sundays, Sunny evenings, BBQs and a cold beer. Oh, and Championship Sundays.

Not sure about summer any more. It's never really all that warm. You spend weeks waiting for it to get slightly warmer than April and before you know it it's September and it's another 10 months til the summer again. Autumn never disappoints.

We should sell our May and September to the rich Icelanders.

Fast.

Outdoor music concerts, humid nights, spending time at the lake, bringing home the turf & picking blackberries to make my own homemade jam.

Hopefully it's a long summer for Roscommon GAA.

Your living in Nevada would you include the burning man festival in your summer to do list?

Beconase for the nose, Optrex for the eyes, Sinutab for the Sinuses - For one week before your historically worst time.
this is the only remedy that ever worked for me.

Promised myself I would go before I was 30. That ship sailed last year. I might go out this year - but its unlikely. Maybe I'll take her indoors next year for our honeymoon. Almost everyone of my friends go - and they aren't fit to speak for a few days when they come back. I just like to peruse their facebook pictures and see if I recognize anyone in the topless bicycle ride.

I'm with you Puck! All ready for the sun, longer evenings, grilling up some steaks, floating about in the pool with a bud in hand.
Heading to Cabo for 4 nights next week with the Bride to get things going. Heading home then for a couple of weeks at the end of June.

Can't beat the summer!

Depends where you spend summer, in NYC It would melt you most of the summer. I love the night when you come out of an air conditioned bar and the air is warm. I like Ireland where it's bright till late and bright again really early, the smell of hay and the taste of guinness after a day working hay or turf.
What can ever beat the summers you have as a young fella?  In the 70s and 80 s when few had money the ice lolly and odd trip to the beach was great. Maybe having too much as a lot of kids do today( or at least had till a couple of years ago) is not the best way to be.

There's no doubt summers were great years ago too Mannix when the weather was better and we had summers in the summer.
I have great memories of kicking ball and swinging hurls in freshly cut stubble fields, or riding trailers full of silage up back roads, of building forts in trees and hedges, pulling strawberries and eating more than I should have. Always enjoyed the autumn too though when the hunting season started.....

i wonder will the kids of today look back in 20 years and have as fond as memories as we do..........

Maybe they will,  the old tv and electronic games takes up a lot of time. Growing up on a farm was hard work but I am glad I did.  And still mayo have to land Sam maguire, that would be some memory.

Ah, yes indeed, summer brings back memories of new-mown meadows and the oul' fella looking  across at Nephin and muttering to himself more in hope than anything else, "Ah, 'twill be alright, thems only wisps of sea fog  We'll chance it."
Memories of my mother, shaking her head but holding her peace and taking out the bread knife to build mountains of batch loaf sandwiches with shop butter and thick cuts of hairy bacon and lumps of Calvita cheese.
The ganger turing around to her and saying, "Well...? Well, Peteen's going and so is Martin Doheny." A mixture of childish petulance and adult autocracy here.

The road from Swinford to Castlebar was always bumpy in my childhood days and my arse got to know and anticipate every last one of them as I and my brothers were squashed into the back seat of the oul' Morris Minor with its dodgy suspensions and the ever-present smell of stale sweat and fresh calf nuts.
The trips to Tuam or the Hyde brought an extra tinge of excitement but more aches and pains the following morning as the poor posterior had more bumps and jolts to contend with.
I have no lasting memories of any games I went to back in those days, except maybe for the time John Morley let a roar out of him that would start off a jackass in Swinford- well, that's what my dad said and I always accepted his word for everything; back in them days anyway.
With that, Morley took off after Pateen Donnellan, who also took off- in the direction of the endline, where he lepped the barrier and dived into the crowd behind it.
The craic was mighty for a good five minutes then alright, what with the Galways trying to hold off the Mayos trying to get in at him, if you can follow me.
God, I was fierce disappointed when the ref managed to get things calmed down and got on with the game as if nothing had happened.

Back then, I took it as an article of faith that every Mayo player was blind, thick or sometimes both and every ref seemed to have a parentage issue. There was always total agreement on this as men gathered outside the church gate after mass to make plans or as they hurried in droves into the ground.
No doubt abut it, every last ladeen on the team was so stupid he wouldn't know the Reek if he was standing on top of it.
Of course it sometimes happened that the same critics underwent a collective memory lapse and little buckeens turned into mighty young fellas before their eyes.
Doom and gloom morphed into boom and bloom without a bother and preparations for the next game were being made on the fly.
Those rare changes of the tune meant a big difference for me. It meant the difference between my father reaching into his breast pocket for his wallet afterwards and his fumbling in a trouser pocket for loose change.
There was one helluva difference between a ten bob note and a half crown.
