Title: Where would you like to visit? But probably won't
Post by: armaghniac on January 15, 2011, 12:45:50 AM
building on some comments from Milltown Row in the "leaving" thread.

Where would you like to travel to, but in reality you'll probably never make it.

For me

Iran
Armenia
Madagascar

I have been. Stand in Aghayaran and look up at the Blue Stacks. It's a decent spot.

Gortin is a lovely wee place too.

I can't think of a place in the north that I haven't been. Of the worst - Larne, Draperstown and the Moy.
Have you ever been to Annaghmore?

Ach it's not that bad now. The wife and I were near moving there as a compromise because we couldn't agree on anywhere else. Kind of reminds me of Holland, without the strippers, the drink or the ganja.

Sorry, didn't mean it in that way, just that it's so hard to find. And it's nowhere near Derryhirk you're thinking of Aghagallon.

Worst place I've ever been is Glenanne.

Would really like to visit Ardboe but I probably won't.

Fcuk I thought it was compulsory or something that everyone from north Armagh had to go pay homage at the Ardboe cross.

i've been to cairo and found it amazing.  visited the egyptian museum, a papyrus factory, the sphinx and the pyramids - it was an amazing day that i'd recommend to everyone and anyone.  the funeral mask of tutankhamun is brilliant to see although air conditioning hasn't made it to cairo yet so the museum was sticky to say the least.

I've always fancied alaska and kodiak island would be an ideal destination.  I'd like to get to india and a rugby weekend in rome would be on my wish list, plenty to see apart from sport

Was very disappointed with the Pyramids,I didn't like that they built Cairo's version of Ballymun right beside them,also didn't like some of the locals who hassle you while there.

Did this trip a couple of years ago, my only advise is to give yourself a couple of days in the grand canyon. I spent to much time in vegas and short changed myself on the trip to the grand canyon. Unreal spot to see.

Maybe we went to the wrong spot,we went to the Skywalk part but I have read since that there are better parts to view it.
I was actually more impressed with the Hoover Dam if I'm honest.
I wasn't blown away by the Grand Canyon at all,same as the Pyramids though maybe I expect too much.

Compared to other places I have been like the Great Ocean Rd drive in Australia or Milford Sound in New Zealand the Grand Canyon was no where near those for an experience in my opinion anyways

The Pyramids experience was ruined for me by the fact I believed they were way out in the middle of the desert,I didn't expect as I said Ballymun flats to be a stones throw away or being able to take a photo of the Pyramids and the Sphinx with KFC and Maccy D's in the background.Plus we were hassled from the moment we got off the bus by locals.

Milford Sound is brilliant, did that on a sunny winter's day, did Doubtful Sound the day before on a bleak, rainy, misty day. Incredible altogether. Want to go to the Norwegian fjords.

It's not the size but how you use it as they say...

Going back to CiKe piece on the Norwegian fjords, it's all about getting a good sunny day & that part of Norway rains more than here.

Dougal, I am rather well endowed now you mention it but apart from that, places you will never go.... As awesome as the city is, New York is hardly somewhere not that accessible or somewhere you couldn't save up to go compared to all these other places mentioned that I have barely even heard of but I know the point you make when you highlight it in such a fashion

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge
I cremated Sam McGee.

Now Sam McGee was from Tennessee, where the cotton blooms and blows.
Why he left his home in the South to roam 'round the Pole, God only knows.
He was always cold, but the land of gold seemed to hold him like a spell;
Though he'd often say in his homely way that he'd "sooner live in hell".

On a Christmas Day we were mushing our way over the Dawson trail.
Talk of your cold! through the parka's fold it stabbed like a driven nail.
If our eyes we'd close, then the lashes froze till sometimes we couldn't see;
It wasn't much fun, but the only one to whimper was Sam McGee.

And that very night, as we lay packed tight in our robes beneath the snow,
And the dogs were fed, and the stars o'erhead were dancing heel and toe,
He turned to me, and "Cap," says he, "I'll cash in this trip, I guess;
And if I do, I'm asking that you won't refuse my last request."

Well, he seemed so low that I couldn't say no; then he says with a sort of moan:
"It's the cursed cold, and it's got right hold till I'm chilled clean through to the bone.
Yet 'tain't being dead -- it's my awful dread of the icy grave that pains;
So I want you to swear that, foul or fair, you'll cremate my last remains."

A pal's last need is a thing to heed, so I swore I would not fail;
And we started on at the streak of dawn; but God! he looked ghastly pale.
He crouched on the sleigh, and he raved all day of his home in Tennessee;
And before nightfall a corpse was all that was left of Sam McGee.

There wasn't a breath in that land of death, and I hurried, horror-driven,
With a corpse half hid that I couldn't get rid, because of a promise given;
It was lashed to the sleigh, and it seemed to say:
"You may tax your brawn and brains,
But you promised true, and it's up to you to cremate those last remains."

Now a promise made is a debt unpaid, and the trail has its own stern code.
In the days to come, though my lips were dumb, in my heart how I cursed that load.
In the long, long night, by the lone firelight, while the huskies, round in a ring,
Howled out their woes to the homeless snows -- O God! how I loathed the thing.

And every day that quiet clay seemed to heavy and heavier grow;
And on I went, though the dogs were spent and the grub was getting low;
The trail was bad, and I felt half mad, but I swore I would not give in;
And I'd often sing to the hateful thing, and it hearkened with a grin.

Till I came to the marge of Lake Lebarge, and a derelict there lay;
It was jammed in the ice, but I saw in a trice it was called the "Alice May".
And I looked at it, and I thought a bit, and I looked at my frozen chum;
Then "Here," said I, with a sudden cry, "is my cre-ma-tor-eum."

Some planks I tore from the cabin floor, and I lit the boiler fire;
Some coal I found that was lying around, and I heaped the fuel higher;
The flames just soared, and the furnace roared -- such a blaze you seldom see;
And I burrowed a hole in the glowing coal, and I stuffed in Sam McGee.

Then I made a hike, for I didn't like to hear him sizzle so;
And the heavens scowled, and the huskies howled, and the wind began to blow.
It was icy cold, but the hot sweat rolled down my cheeks, and I don't know why;
And the greasy smoke in an inky cloak went streaking down the sky.

I do not know how long in the snow I wrestled with grisly fear;
But the stars came out and they danced about ere again I ventured near;
I was sick with dread, but I bravely said: "I'll just take a peep inside.
I guess he's cooked, and it's time I looked"; . . . then the door I opened wide.

And there sat Sam, looking cool and calm, in the heart of the furnace roar;
And he wore a smile you could see a mile, and he said: "Please close that door.
It's fine in here, but I greatly fear you'll let in the cold and storm --
Since I left Plumtree, down in Tennessee, it's the first time I've been warm."

There are strange things done in the midnight sun
By the men who moil for gold;
The Arctic trails have their secret tales
That would make your blood run cold;
The Northern Lights have seen queer sights,
But the queerest they ever did see
Was that night on the marge of Lake Lebarge

Good man, Niall Quinn.

What I'd really like to do but definitely won't is to time-travel. There's hardly any period in the past that wouldn't be fascinating to experience. As long as you could avoid plagues and massacres and bad smells.

Strangely enough, I'd have no interest in visiting the future at all. You wouldn't understand any of it and it would probably be a big disappointment. All the things that were predicted in the past that we're now experiencing have turned out to be no big deal. Mainly I'd be afraid of the future because with the way things are going it's nearly certain the future will be run by women and that men (those that are not exterminated at birth) will be enslaved.

I would love to visit the Ka'aba in Mecca but unless there is a Vatican 2 in Islam it will remain off limits.

There is a transgender  temple in Tamil Nadu in India that looks very interesting.

Another one somewhere in India is full of rats but I don't think the kids would like it.

The playground of the bunscoil in Leitir Meallain was used as one of the locations for the recording of Gugalai Gug
and I would love to visit  sometime.

The grand canyon is surely more impressive than Milford Sound. I was at Milford Sound on a misty cloudy day and haven't been to the grand Canyons. Milford Sound has some nice sea scenery but the Grand Canyon is unique, a mile deep or something like that. It is surely worth a watch.

If you judge the Grand Canyon by the view from the Skywalk, then you do it a disservice.  Far better places to catch the panoramic view than there.  Evening time, when the sun begins to set over the canyon is one of those magical moments and would highly recommend it. You don't realise the scale of the place until you look at one of the photos at the lookout points and you realise that the rock you are looking at in the distance is actually 40km away.

Would love to visit Alaska and the whole wilderness thing going on up that direction, don't know why but it interests me.

And of course, Australia, followed by Buenos Aires.

Have never been to Milford Sound but looking at the pictures it looks similar to the Norwegian fjords & I agree the Grand Canyon is unique, though make sure you don't do the skywalk tour as looking at the pictures/videos it's a poor view.

Anywhere where I can see the Northern Lights in the depths of winter. Been planning it for about ten years and am no further along than the day I started.

I am sure I heard that the northern lights will be seen as far south as Rome in 2012, so find some dark wee spot up the north and you should have a good view of them.

To catch this brilliant swirl of shimmering colours in the night sky, head north—to Canada.
by Suzanne Morphet 6 November 2009

Have you seen the Northern Lights? I mean really seen them, in all their glory as they swirl over the night sky, colouring it red, green and purple?

If you're guilty of putting off that trip north—maybe spending time outdoors in minus 40 degrees C (-40 degrees F) isn't your idea of fun!—don't wait much longer. Beginning about 2012, the aurora borealis will be at its best in a long time.

The lights will be more brilliant, more frequent, more amazing than any time in the last decade—maybe even the last century.

Why? The short answer is "solar maximum." Sounds scientific, and it is, but the simple explanation is that between 2012 and 2013, the sun will be going through an intense period of activity, producing lots of charged particles. When these hit the earth's atmosphere, look out! Or rather, look up. If you're in the right place, you'll see a fantastic show of lights.

And, where's the right place?  Yellowknife, NWT, for a couple reasons. It's at 62 degrees latitude, and if you know anything about the earth's magnetic field, you know that 62 degrees is directly under a dominant magnetic line. Plus, Yellowknife skies are usually clear, with no clouds impeding your view.

Rent a parka, drive a dog team (or snowmobile) away from the city lights. Or visit Aurora Village and stay warm in a traditional tipi.

Yes, it can be mighty cold up there, but the night sky is sizzling hot.

No, It's rubbish. The missus wanted to take a look a couple of years back so we drove up from Belfast for a look, it would have been the biggest waste of a day ever only we drove back along the coast road and that was very impressive. Drive the coast road and don't bother yourselves going down to see a few 'oul rocks

I've never been to Scotland or Wales, and there are a bunch of places in Ireland I've yet to see, and with living abroad and the time it takes to see all the family and friends when you get home - I doubt I'll get to see them all.

I`ve always liked Scotland, even more so if you avoid Glasgow, especially at the weekends. The Highlands are beautiful, fantastic scenery, lovely people, its very like the west of Ireland.

Wales on the other hand. Avoid. Downtrodden little Englanders. Dont go there, especially Holyhead.

Ach go ahead and tell the fella more. After all since Christmas you've told us that you've been to Australia New Zealand, Egypt, and the USA,  you spend hundreds on camera lenses, you've a Ping G15 golf driver, you've played Portmarnock and Druids Glen golf courses and you're getting a 3D telly. Sure after all that one more little boast is neither here nor there.

Since he can afford all that, he must have did alright in Vegas.

When i did the Causeway it was one of those bus tours things that included Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge & a tour of the Bushmills distillery.

Agree Holyhead is a awful place though the scenery around Anglesey is perhaps the best in Wales

Actually we were sitting behind a family from Roscommon in Croke Park on the day of the National League final. I got talking to the mother and she was rather disappointed that the Croke Park shop hadn't any Roscommon gear on sale as she'd hoped to buy something for her 2 young kids. I reminded her of the times when Armagh were no hopers and told her not to despair as one day Roscommon would come good. Hope they were back in Croker for the AI quarter final
