Title: Stung on Ebay - any advice?
Post by: The Gs Man on December 16, 2010, 06:52:16 PM
Looking a bit of advice if anyone can give it.

Bought an item off Ebay, 50 quid for a dolls house as a Christmas present for my daughter. Opened the box the other day to check that everything was present and correct, one of those build it yourself jobs.

So, the roof, made from fecking flimsy cardboard is tore and not worth a fcuk. Some of the walls at the side are also very creased and again, one of them is ripped.

I contacted the seller through ebay to get their returns policy and low and behold, they said, in very broken English, that they don't accept returns.

So what happens? Can I just get robbed like that and get passed off with a pish-poor product?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

No, there's a way of getting funds back through paypal.
If you see the section in your account to leave feedback, click on something like "resolve a problem" and there's a procedure to go through.

Start a complaints proceedure, (open a dispute) on paypal if thats how you paid. It will freeze the money in their paypal account until they either resolve it for you or give you a refund. The money can't go in to their bank until you have leave positive feedback, which I presume you haven't because of the state of the item!

What? That's not right, the money goes to them immediately but I think paypal has a way to get it back.

Any time I have sold anything on ebay I had to wait a certain amount of days (30 or something) or wait til I got positive feedback, whatever is sooner, before the money was released from paypal to my account!

As the previous posters said, raise a dispute, item not as described etc. You should get your money back ok through Paypal.

That's strange. I only ever sold one thing on ebay and I'm sure I got it right way - there's some items I never leave feed back for, you would think they'd be asking you to give the feedback if that was the case.

They have a cash on delivery policy for those sort of services.

Cheers lads. I will raise a dispute and see how it goes from there. I have noticed that others have left negative feedback for the same item so that might help when I go through ebay/paypal.

I rarely if ever leave feedback. Can't be bothered as I am usually happy with what I have bought. I too thought they got the money instantly.

Strange timing - my boss just told me a story today of a guy he said he knew (could be an urban legend) who got stung on ebay after selling two big game tickets. The even was approaching and the winning bidder told him that she was not going to buy the tickets. He said she had to - she had won the bid. She said - take it up with ebay - its not my problem.

Guy goes away - sets up a new ebay account/email account and contacts the woman- offering to pay twice what she paid for the tickets. She goes for it - and contacts the orginal seller and asks would he still sell the tickets. He agreed - went to meet her, sold the tickets. She then contacted the facticious seller - who turned her words on her and said - take it up with ebay, its not my problem - Im not buying the tickets any more.

I'm pretty sure that's the way it works as I have sold a number of items on eBay before and ha always been the case. After a certain period the money is released anyway if there is no dispute or any type of feedback.

G's man, try this.

Paypal is an Ebay company.  In the event of a dispute Ebay/Paypal will review your correspondence to date.  I d/k waht correspondence you;ve had to date but this should work, but do it all through Ebay, not via email.

Rather than complain about the build quality contact the seller to say more than half the parts are missing.  Be specific as you can so if there's 30 parts say 17 haven't arrived etc.  Lodge a complaint with Paypal and Ebay to say you didnt receive the goods and you've taken it up with the seller who has told you to get lost.

Send a package of bits back to the seller via recorded delivery and email Paypal & Ebay a copy of the receipt to show you've done so.

If Ebay sellers can't prove the item was delivered Paypal will refund the money to the purchaser.  Ebay own Paypal so it's in their interest to ensure transactions go smoothly but your arguement re build quality might not be enough to swing it.

I assume as it was a dolls house it arrived by signed for carrier but your argument that it was more than 50% incomplete coupled with proof you've have returned what you received  should hopefully convince Ebay/Paypal you did not get delivery of what you paid for.

Good luck

your lucky! i bought a motorbike on ebay near Birmingham. it looked class and when the guy rang me he told me it was mint. luckily it was cash on collection, so i booked the van on the holyhead boat cost me 130euro one way had to fill it with diesel 100euro drove all night when i got off the boat. totally fukd i pulled into a lay by for a rest about 4.30 closed my eyes for about 20mins only to be awakened by to cops who tried to say i was drunk but they didn't have a tester with them so they took the keys and me to the station. when i successfully blew into a bag and then a digital machine and they decided i wasn't drunk they said they hadn't time to leave me back to the van so they foned a taxi and i had to pay him £20. so its now about 6 am and I'm wrecked and freezing started to drive down the road and i couldn't understand what the noise was or where the breeze was coming from... some bastard had put the back window in >:( :o. the only thing in the back was a new ratchet strap and they took it £12. so i kept going happy in the knowledge that I'd soon get my bike. finally arrived at your mans place and he wheels out this abortion and its not even the same colour as the pictures i printed off  >:( >:( after about 20mins of "allspark". i told him to shove it and he asks me not to give him  negative feedback. its still early so i head for stranraer have to buy more diesel £40 and book on the boat £110. sudo cream my arse!

That story gave me a good laugh and ever so slightly eased my hangover. Other peoples misfortune sometimes makes me feel better...dont know how you didn't nail him!
