Saw that on usatoday.com of all places. With Horslips back on the scene I thought we might try our own list. I'll count it up in a week or two if there is any interest. (Any post with Daniel O'Donnell or similar will be presumed to be a wind up).
If you had the choice of seeing only 5 Irish Acts live before you die who would you choose?
Here is my list:
1. U2
2. The Pogues
3. Christy Moore
4. The Stunning/Walls
5. Paul Brady
What about

Irish or Irish music? If the Pogues are allowed are the likes of Irish-Americans allowed?
I heard this year's Pogues tour is the final farewell tour, is this true?

I've been to the Belfast concerts for the past 3 years and this is the first time I've heard it mentioned. Could be wrong, though.
I only heard it for the first time in the paper a few weeks back and been to a fair few of their Christmas concerts. All unbelievable.
I've seen Planxty/Christy Moore/W.Tones/Saw Docs so as for five I still haven't seen but hope to soon, I'd go with:
Damien Dempsey
U2
Kila
John Spillane
Either Sharon Shannon or Luka Bloom (toughie)

There's a lad called Declan Nerney probably crying in the corner (he could be a regular poster here.....he's from Drumlish but he's mad about Colmcille) as you picked Crystal Meth Swing ahead of him.
For shame.
Tommy Sands is playing here in Reno next month - is he worth going to see?

1. Afro Celts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta3DvoVwvec Amazing live, though they havent toured in a while.
2. Kila. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cS7CATY-4Ic Great live, touring at the minute.
3. Luka Bloom. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVihT1wtDtc Much better than his moore famous brother.

5. Jinx Lennon. Saw Jinx play a live show to no one in particular lately on the side of a mountain. Was out for a walk and thought I could hear a radio in the distance. Turns out it was the boul Jinx. He was absolutely brilliant, even the dogs sat down to listen to him. Well worth going to see if you ever get the chance.

1. SLF
2. Therapy

Something Happens
The Frank and Walters
Cypress Mine

Im not really a fan of Ash, but they have always been very good anytime I have seen them.
Billys Boots are A House still together?
Since there aren't any Irish bands or even bands from elsewhere that I would ever feel I need to see before I die, (before they die, possibly), I just thought I'd throw up a list of Irish bands that I like that haven't been mentioned and where they're from.
1. Primordial (Dublin)
2. Mourning Beloveth (Laois, Donegal, elsewhere)
3. I'll Eat Your Face (Cork)
4. Glyder (Wicklow)
5. For Ruin (Cork)
6. Mael Mordha (from parts unknown to me)
7. William Christ and the One Man 0rgy (Belfast)
8. Gama Bomb (Belfast, Dublin)

Not that I'm aware of anyway - Dave Couse does a show now and again on Today FM.

Ash are great live. I've seen them around 20 times and they've always been great.
Aye, seen Ash twice back in the 90's, definitely a great live band.

They're generally mentioned in 'Albums you must own', but not live. I saw a bit of them once @ Electric Picnic. Wasn't up to much to be honest.

Christy Dignam receiving end of life care, very sad
In no particular order:
U2
Boomtown Rats
The Indians
Joe Dolan
Josef Locke
The three amigos
Going to see Primordial in a couple of weeks in Birmingham. Probably the 5th time to see them. Great live band.
It's a tough time for bands now after Covid as many venues have disappeared, and those that survive are taking a cut of bands merchandise sales which is basically the last real revenue stream for bands that aren't well established now that streaming has killed album sales and it pays a pittance.
So make the effort to go see bands, buy their CD or T-shirts directly from them and tell venue's to stop taking a cut from merchandise sales otherwise don't expect to see your favourite bands anytime before you or they die.

+1. I would have included Aslan as well as one of the great Irish acts over the last 4 decades, unfortunately this week's news regarding Christy Dignam puts an end to that, very sad.

Sad news. The Wolfe Tones are good value and a good piss up and craic, but theres something special about Christy Moore, especially as you are sitting there sober you really get to appreciate how good he is. Serious entertainer.

Not discussing talent here though are we? Been to both several times and both very very good but very very different nights for obvious reasons. Would highly recommend both.
A poster made a comment exclusively referring to talent. I responded to that post. Pretty simple.
