I have a friend who'll be in Ballywalter on Sunday. Has anyone any idea if there would be a pub in the village where he could watch the game?
I doubt anyone in Ballywalter will even know that Down are in the All-Ireland never mind show it.They'll be showing Utd and Liverpool anyway.I'd say ur friends best bet is to go to nearby Kirkubbin or Portaferry for the game.
Tell him to drive to Portavogie and ask for directions to Ballygalget club.

Go to the Quays pub/restaurant at the corner of the harbour, the owner is a lad Adair, tell him I sent you and you want to watch RTE2.
It'll not be a problem ;D

Whats the ulster scots for RTE2 and is your friend Usain Bolt
The Sandpiper Inn is a great pub for games, though the atmosphere wont be great on Sunday as most of the locals will be at the game.

The Sandpiper Inn didn't get too many tickets from Sean O'G so there'll be a big enough crowd in the front lounge
As for the Ulster scots translations

tell your 'friend' to avoid it altogether
He's now decided that he'll drive over to Clough and watch it there. He's an Armagh supporter and after driving through Clough today he was heartened by the number of orange flags still flying almost 3 months after they were put out of the championship and feels he'll get a much warmer welcome there
If he's going to drive the whole way from Ballywalter to Clough, why doesn't he just go feckin home to Armagh? If he went through Belfast it would near be as quick.
I don't think there's even a pub in Clough any more.
This thread led me to look up some information about Ballywalter and I found out that the inhabitants of the village and surrounding area played a gallant part in the 1798 rebellion. Things may be very different nowadays but the area has a proud history from 1798.

There'd be plenty of protestant dissenters down that neck of the woods OK, but they may be dissenting about much different things nowadays.
I am sure you are right Johnney. That change in 200 odd years is one of the tragedies of Irish history. How different things might have been in this country. :( :( :(

I read a very good article about King Billy and the glorious revolution of 1688 (which was anything but glorious for Ireland). Apparently the big difference between James and Billy was that the former wanted a system where the monarch had absolute power and Billy was more into the modern style of individual rights and the rule of Parliament. anyway the writer said something I found strange- that Billy upheld the rights of individuals. I couldn't tally that with anything I knew about Irish history. And he went on to say that Billy wanted to extend the same system to Ireland but was overruled by the Protestant settlers in Ulster who preferred to keep the old system with them at the top and the Taigs below. Imagine if Billy had pushed them how different Irish history would have been. Instead of the penal laws and the rest that followed. It is all explained in this book

It's back to the drawing board for my friend I'm afraid. He phoned the pub in Clough today but they're not showing the match as it clashes with the televising of the Papal Mass with the Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman, Cofton Park, Birmingham. He's not sure what to do now

Has he tried any of the bars in Greyabbey? They always have drinks promotions on during the games.

Do the patrons drink it, or throw the glasses at the screen?

Rumour has it Dougal, that a snatch-squad has been organised in Strabane (with the usual lethality!) to 'rescue' your friend from the clutches of satanic puritanicals to be brought to the bosom of gaelic glory for the gratification of his sanctified soul for the duration of the occasion.
Can't verify the veracity of it though, myself, verily ;)
You're almost correct there Fear, except that the snatch squad is not from Strabane but rather Newbuildings where he can be sure that every pub will be showing the match. Hope to see you at the Horslips gig in Belfast in December

They drink it, first. ;) Horrible place Greyabbey, makes Lurgan seem exotic.
