From Channel 4 website:

Gypsies or Gypos, Pavees or Pikeys. But do you know which of these words are insults? Or how Travellers refer to each other amongst themselves?

They have ways that 'settled people' struggle to understand and traditions that still hold as strong today as they did a hundred years ago. Here are a few things you might not know about these pavee people...

Travellers are a group of people who are, or were once, nomadic. Gypsies are similar because of their lifestyle, but they're usually of Romani origin whilst most Travellers are Irish or English.

Travellers didn't mind being called gypsies until the word 'gypo' became a common insult. You're not being politically correct by calling Travellers 'itinerants'; this is a name they despise. They were originally referred to as 'tinkers' because many were skilled tinsmiths; mending the pots, pans and tools of local people as they moved from place to place – however with the influx of plastic and machinery this trade quickly became redundant. They'll call each other 'pavees' amongst themselves but it wouldn't be appreciated if a 'settled person' (someone who has always lived in a house) called them that! So call a Traveller a Traveller.

Origins

The largest groups of Travellers live in Great Britain and Ireland. There is much debate about their origin, some say they came from families who were evicted during famine times in Ireland – with no fixed home they moved from place to place. Other historians claim Travellers were around long before that. Travellers have great pride in their history and culture.

'Settled' Travellers

To be called a Traveller doesn't necessarily mean you move from place to place, in fact most have settled down, hence the term 'settled Traveller'. But some Travellers resent being called 'settled'. They say if you're born a Traveller, that's who you are for life, regardless of whether you live in a caravan or a house. Others shy away from even being identified as a Traveller because of the negative connotations that go with it.

Faith and Beliefs

Mainly they have strong Catholic values with a somewhat conservative view of the world. They're faithful to their own traditions and customs with religion playing a very important part life.

Homosexuality is greatly frowned upon. Honour means a great deal in this community, particularly when it comes to sex outside marriage. A Traveller man will expect his wife to be a virgin when they get married. A woman who has lost her virginity won't have an easy job finding a husband in the Traveller community. That's why young Traveller girls have such a strict upbringing, being closely watched by their families, never left alone with another man to make sure their honour is never called into question.

Looking for a Husband

Most people are familiar with the very distinct fashion of a young Traveller girl; fake tan, hooped earrings, short skirts and belly tops adorn many a Traveller teenager. Some may say their dress is provocative but it's very much a case of 'look but don't touch'. These ladies are proud of their bodies and comfortable in themselves and see no reason to stay covered up, they're looking out for a husband and want to look their best. However many will admit that they marry as teenagers to get more freedom, desperate to move out of the family home and escape the strict influence of their parents.

Arranged marriages are less frequent now but not unheard of, there are still a few matchmakers within the community. Many Travellers have married their first cousins but that's not common practise any more. Large families are still very much the norm, with some couples having over 10 children!

Reputation

The Traveller trouble makers have made the headlines, leaving other decent people to suffer with an unjustified negative reputation.

This is a proud community with great loyalty to their own families and people. Once a very insular community, but as this documentary demonstrates, some Travellers are now ready to open up and speak for themselves.

They are all feckin minted!

I see they have wrecked the houses they had built for them in West Belfast after living in them for a couple of years. Took the manhole covers and all.
This is the 3rd time they have done this.
They f**k the system in almost every possible way - so fair play  :P

Interesting programme, demonstrating examples of the incredible prejudice shown against the community in Britain, and we know it's no different in Ireland of course.  It seems to be one of those 'acceptable' bigotries to still have.  The English-born traveller wemen all seem hot by the looks of that programme!

Whats not to be bigotted about these people?

They are a blight on the landscape where ever they go!
We are paying for their lay about theiving life style dont forget that.

We pay them benefits, we try to build houses (or even areas of cleared land) for them which they repeatedly destroy and theive from.

We pay for an education better than our own kids will recieve in terms of Teacher to Pupil numbers (if you dont believe me check out the school on barrack st in the city)

Its time to stop romanticising these people and does no one see anything wrong with the fact that these kids are getting engaged at 14 and married at 15 16?

Watched it last night.... interesting show. Travellers have done me no wrong by me so far so I amn't too worked about them either way.

Funny moment when one of the brides had to be literally dragged / pushed out of her horse drawn carriage as her dress was so big. Have to agree that some of the traveller girls were fine looking things....... although dressed like ...... I won't even say it.

Interesting programme all the same. Couldn't help but feel sorry for some of the traveller girls........ living in a timewarped parallel society.

For all the romantic bleeding hearts - would you be happy if a squad of them moved in next door to you ? No - i didnt think so. Any section in society that wants to lead life by their own laws and outside of societies norm can expect prejudice against them. Its human nature.

Showed the girls in good light and provided good insight into their lives. That aspect was very good.

But a show like that be edited to show what the producers want to show. I'm not suggesting anything or being bigoted here, just a fair point.

What about those dresses! The money must be crazy!! Custom made. £10k, £20k? More?

The good looking 22 yr old and the new husband (was his name Pa?) were being interviewed just before they were heading for the scratcher. She wasn't exactly over the moon. :-\ She kept going on about how much they fight and how they will "just have to make the most of it".

Good start. He wasn't long running up the stairs for his smokey ride though :o

The young girl at the end was 22 when she married, which she admitted herself was 'old' in the travelling community.

It was an interesting programme, although some of the dresses were hideous with one known to weigh 27 stone!! Still  when you hear that the women's role is marriage, babies and family and that's it, I can understand why they go to such extremes on the big day.

The 22 year old in question, like many of them, seemed to be "in love" with the idea of a big day out, expensive one off 20 stone dress, knackerish horse and carriage etc etc. Very few, if any of them seemed interested or more importantly were in love with the man they were marrying.
Living in a house doesn't mean that she doesn't sh*t in a ditch, you can take the girl out of the trailer...................

Just watched that there, their treatment of women is shocking.  Not one of those couples seemed to have any interest in each other.  Not much difference between them and those eejits who have arranged marriages and such nonsense.
That girl at 22 who married a fella she only met twice - I just feel sorry for her.

Well said.  As for the women the other night, your doll who was getting her hair done and had her wedding reception venue suddenly cancelled was in some nick, but the blond as Bing mentioned was class looking in her normal clothes - both had qware racks.

Racism, discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping................. and the fact you have to ask the question.

Its not steriotyping if your speaking from experience so cop yourself on and get off your moral high horse.
The members of the travelling community I know of are involved in drug dealing, robbery, battery, stabbings and worse.
For the most part, their community here in Ireland are serious social problem.

The TV show does show their community in good light, which some of them are. But it doesn't show the underside of things and puts puppy dogs in windows.
But, did you ever wonder where they get their money for the new cars, vans and houses as well as the thousands they spend on weddings and funerals?
Keep believing that they get it from saving their social welfare and selling tin jugs and pots on the side of the road.  ::)

The ignorance and naivety is stifling.

Too true, everyone has these high opinions of them but if they had to live next door to them their tolerance will be put to the test.  Don't worry the PC police will be along soon, I had the same debate with them on here before.  100% of my experiences with travellers has been to my detriment, from early days at school, living in the community and in a social setting.  Quite happy to allow other people to have a good opinion of them but that is my opinion.

For the record, I have a good opinion of some members of the travelling community.
But I have seen and experienced things that have tainted my opinion of other members of the travelling community.
On one hand it can be argued that its not their fault as lack of education, racism, paranoia, ignorance, deprived upbringing among a million other reasons have lead to the way that some of them are.
Its sad but there is no solution to it. But it really irks me when someone on a moral high house will tell you your "Racism, discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping".
Its a sure sign they have no clue what they are on about or they live in a world of cotton wool and dont have experience of what they are talking about

If im banned for my comments so be it, but I doubt I will as there are low lives in all walks of life from top to bottom.

Any traveller can turn up at the wedding as well. No guest list at all.

Is that for the reception or just the fight?

Whats not to be bigotted about these people?

They are a blight on the landscape where ever they go!
We are paying for their lay about theiving life style dont forget that.

We pay them benefits, we try to build houses (or even areas of cleared land) for them which they repeatedly destroy and theive from.

We pay for an education better than our own kids will recieve in terms of Teacher to Pupil numbers (if you dont believe me check out the school on barrack st in the city)

Its time to stop romanticising these people and does no one see anything wrong with the fact that these kids are getting engaged at 14 and married at 15 16?

Thanks folks

My comment was not racist or facist or whatever NKAB was accusing me of.

Simple fact is we are paying for the lifestyle these people choose, tell me this would you be happy with them moving in next door to your or even the field next to your house?

No I didnt think so!

If your comment wasn't racist was it, in your opinion, bigoted then?

The girl who was 22 and unmarried was considered 'over the hill'. They would need to say a few rosaries for me then  :-\

You want me to? I'm regularly stopped by Irish Travellers, wanting me to pray with them. Gets annoying after a while, but you can't really say no.

Got stopped again last Monday afternoon to pray with them.

Are you making allegations?

Does anyone know if I can sue over this slanderous comment?
