Title: East Béal Feirste
Post by: DirtyDozen12 on October 15, 2009, 02:00:42 PM
Right, on the looking scene for a house to rent and my budget is pretty tight this year and the cheapest places i have found to rent are in East Belfast.  I can rent a very nice house for £425 a month over there but being a catholic boy from the country am a little hesititant about moving to the east of the city.  Does anyone hear live / or ever have lived in East Béal Feirste and would they recommned it?  Ive currently live in South Béal Feirste but am looking to get the rent down a bit but feckers over here wont budge on anything!!  I thought we where in recession  :-[

It's a hell of a lot more mixed than it used to be. Sure Brolly has the huge goalposts up next door to Paisley's church.Ravenhill rd is now vey mixed.I know lots of people who live around Cregagh road as well and have never had any bother.

Its a big place DirtyDozen.....some areas would be grand for a fenian (very few in fairness) others would be no go areas like the big housing estates around Tullycarnet, Ballybeen ...areas like the Belmont Road, Stormont would be OK...they are a wee bit more upmarket, obviously the Short Strand is your side of the house.

At the end of the day to my knowledge its a while since a catholic has been lynched in the big bad east.

Have you not considered the West??

You're safe as houses in the North of the city, just stay away from the Upper Cavehill Road direction, some seriously dodgy folk up that neck of the woods!!!

I don't know about £425 though and what you would get for that.  You probably would get something decent in the streets between the Antrim Road and the Cavehill Road.

Look, the west is okay but if you want to go a bit more fenian upmarket, head towards Ballyhackamore. The fact is that whilst the west has its own Sainsburys now, you are far still far more likely to see two dogs (usually an alsatian and a cocker spaniel)  humping the hole of each other outside the front doors of the Andytown one that you are at Forestside. It's little things like that that make a difference.

The East is grand. I lived there for a few years and never had any hassle. I also know plenty of other Catholics/Nationalists who have lived there without hassle. It has become a lot more mixed with old people dying and their houses being bought by 'young professionals'. At the same time, I still wouldn't walk around in a GAA top.

Having said that, you're better going out a bit from the City Centre. Newtownards Rd, Holywood Rd, Castlereagh Rd, Ravenhill Rd and Cregagh Rd all get rougher the closer you get to the city centre. Personally, I think upper ends of any of those roads, or even the Belmont Road would be grand. Stay well clear of Albertbridge Road, Lower Newtownards Road, Woodstock Road, Lower Ravenhill and even the Sydenham/Connswater Ave side of Holywood Road.

Hard On, i'm not going to argue.. Just accept my point about dogs having sex in supermarkets in the west. Also, dogs lying at the entrance licking their extended length while people walk by is quite common. Agree?

I don't know about £425 though and what you would get for that.  You probably would get something decent in the streets between the Antrim Road and the Cavehill Road.

At that price it would have to be an apt in the Antrim Rd area.  The houses on those streets are the big three storey ones usually, a bit different from the small ones over in East Belfast.  Must go back to the days when the Antrim Road was posh...

At least I'm hoping the £425 is for a property all to yourself, otherwise my sister's friend isn't paying enough rent to us for her room!

Wife before we tied the knot, rented at the Cregagh end of Ravenhill Ave, spent alot of time there, and one thing for sure is that the only "safe" bar to go into in East Belfast was the Eastender!! :o :o :o Just keep your head down and don't go near on International nights or Huns games.

Really? I don't know why but I always got the impression that The Eastender was up to its neck...

It was but compared to the other watering holes it was ok during the week when there were very few about. Infact DD12 scrub East Belfast, why live somewhere that you'll have to travel into city centre all the time to socialise.

In my view, Andytown starts at the Barracks even though it is still the Falls Road up to the bingo hall.

That's as close as you'll get. Falls and Andytown Roads start / end at Andersonstown Park junction.

Bomb explodes in east Belfast
A bomb has exploded underneath a car in east Belfast.

Friday, 16 October 2009

The area around the property at Kingsdale Park has been cordoned off and the Gilnahirk Road has been closed.

It is understood that the intended target may have been an off-duty member of the security forces but a woman without any security force connections had just got into the car to drive off when the device triggered.

DD12 wouldn't bother with the E Belfast move - http://www.u.tv/News/Bomb-explodes-in-east-Belfast/38465841-d11b-45df-a39c-a3e54b8071d4

Don't see how that makes living in East Belfast any more or less safe.

Must be a torture getting a place on your own though. Paying £425 for rent would break my heart especially when you add in that you have the bills to pay yourself.

Was being tongue in cheek!  ::)

Would say that DD12 is getting a place to himself for that price.

Wouldn't have a clue about or go near East Belfast. What sort of life is it if u have to watch what you wear/disguise your GAA bag as your goin into your house after trainin --shit place, wouldnt go near it.

Those people actually believe they are livin in England and not on the island of Ireland --they'd want to study a map

The Eastender!  Before I met the good Mrs BC i was with a girl from the Cregagh Road.  She was grand but her brother was a little Englander who modelled himself on Portillo.  Anyway, he said one night that we go to the Eastender for a pint.  This was in the middle of the marching season so as you can imagine I declined.  Place was full of real hardcore knee breakers.

Stay north or west young DD12, safe among your own until we breed them out of the East too :P

So where does Andersonstown end when heading up the Glen Road towards the brewery?

Heard that also Hardstation. the bunch of grapes, was first called the Ibrox Bar until Rangers found out and told them they had to change it. so they painted over the I and used a real light paint, the I is still noticeable
You are what is known as a bullshitter and/or misinformed.

They are smarter than that. What they actually did was that they got rid of the 'I' and replaced it with an eye symbol. An oval with a dot in the middle.

Edit: Found a pic.

Honestly, they first painted over it and then changed it to what they have now, clever idea really.

as for the start of the Andytown road, there is a marker on the road that indicates the start of the road facing Curleys, entrance to andytown park, as Saffron says.
