Controversial program about George Best on BBC2 9PM.
poor lady, quick fall.
The husband seemed like a great fella
If he had have played gaelic football like the rest of the country he would be still alive today. ;) Turned it over after half an hour didn't really interest me.

Why the fcuk was Best being portrayed as being so camp?
No matter about the subject, which ,could have been interesting, thought the show was pretty poor stuff, watch about 20 mins before turning it over :-\
Watched about 20 mins as well - car crash t.v.
The whole Fatboy show this morning has been given over to talking about this, poor George this and George and his mother shouldn't be intruded upon like this. All these twats phoning in talking about"George" and Mrs Best like they knew them all their lives!

I would say the family didnt want to be involved when they realised there was no cash to be made. Fcuk me they have had half a dozen books out about our Geordie and sold everything with any link to him.

That is one of the most pathetic comments I have read on this board. The graveyards of Ireland are full of people died from alcoholism many who played Gaelic football. I would guess many on this board have had relatives and friends in the throws of alcoholism... I certainly have. Thankfully the GAA has been done great work to address this issue in recent years with their Drink and Drug Awareness campaigns.
I found this drama interesting and the behind the scenes programme after it added to this. There is no doubt that George Best's fame destroyed both him and his mother (and arguably his entire family) and I think this came across very well, in that his mother is often the forgotten victim. It also drew paralells with both lives, the sporting prowess (apparently Mrs Best was a very good hockey player) which he inherited from her as well as the inability to cope and alcohol addiction which sent both to early graves.
If I had any criticism it was that it lasted too long...though it was great to see "Dympna" from the Hole in the Arse gang get a long deserved slap in the mouth ;D

Sad show really - tragic ending for a mother and her son -Dickie didn't have it easy.
the story was really about a mother losing her son at the age of 15, dealing with his fame and controlling an addiction which you would not wish on your worst enemy. she didn't start drinking to late on in life and in the end died from heart disease brought on by her alcoholism. inside ten years she died. sad stuff really
they stayed in that house right up till Dickies death last year. can you imagine that happening today
