For a normally steady team in the minors Down got a fair beating.  What sort of team do they have this year?

That would make the Meath minors about 32 years of age

Meath minors' promising start in Ulster league
ULSTER MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE Cavan........................0-12 Meath.......................3-08

IT will take much sterner tests to evaluate this year's Meath minors than the one encountered in this openinground Ulster MFL tie at floodlight Kingspan Breffni Park last Friday night.

Pat Coyle's charges mixed the good with the bad, which was understandable considering that it was their first outing together. However, in terms of their capacity to emulate last year's Leinster title success, the jury will have to sit for a little longer.

A return of 3-8 was commendable, however, with a purple patch coming in the third quarter as Meath turned a 0-5 to 0-4 deficit into a 2-8 to 0-7 lead by the 43rd minute. They only managed a Harrison Silke goal from there to the finish, however, as the home side cut the deficit to three points late in the game.

Afterwards, manager Coyle expressed his satisfaction with the display, and especially the manner in which his side responded to Cavan's late surge.

'Some of the lads had never played together before and this was the first real competitive outing. There were some mistakes, but they knuckled down and dug deep, even in the last 10 minutes,' he said.

' We have a good strong panel of 24 and six more lads who couldn't tog out tonight because of the rules restricting panels to 24.'

Ciaran Lenehan, Damien Carroll, Silke, Bryan Menton, Kevin Mallon, Mark McCormack, Sean Tobin and David Larkin are survivors from last year's squad and Lenehan, Carroll, Silke, Mallon and McCormack in particular impressed in this outing. Substitute Conor Deveraux also made a big impression.

The sides were level on three occasions in the first half before wingback Michael Brady gave the Breffni boys a minimum lead at the break.

Meath made a great start to the second half, with corner forward Shane Gillespie pointing in the opening attack. Then Silke fisted a point after a move started in the fullback line by Lenehan.

By the 33rd minute the visitors were 1-6 to 0-5 ahead, with Gillespie having a simple tap-in after Carroll's goal effort was blocked.

Cavan replied with a couple of converted frees from midfielder Barry Reilly, but then Meath scored a second goal, Emmet Boyle finding the net following a a great delivery from Silke. Boyle then added a point from a free to leave his side ahead by double scores.

Meath lost their way after that and Cavan were unlucky not to find the net at least once. It was 2-8 to 0-11 in the 55th minute before the impressive Silke ended any hopes of a late Cavan charge by netting a minute from time.

This would be a very good Dublin team. Best we've had for about 5 years.

ULSTER MINOR LEAGUE

Wednesday March 18 2009

MEATH commence their Ulster MFL campaign against Cavan at Kingspan Breffni Park this Saturday at noon.

All nine northern teams, plus Dublin and Meath are included in this year's competition, with the two Leinster counties playing all their games at away venues, except when they meet in the final game of the group.

That clash is scheduled for Navan on April 18th, but Meath have a much more important date that day, a home tie with Offaly in round one of the Leinster MFC. Dublin face Louth the same day.

The league will be run off on successive weekends, with Armagh, Down and Monaghan the other counties in the group. Holders and subsequent All-Ireland champions Tyrone, who beat Meath after a replay in last year's final, are included in the other group along with Donegal, Derry, Antrim and Fermanagh.

Participating in the Ulster League was the platform for the county's success in winning the Leinster title, according to Meath minor boss Pat Coyle who is starting out his second year in charge.

'The league is vital to us in preparation for the championship,' said the Curraha man. 'It gives us good competitive outings every week until the opening round of the championship and we are very fortunate to be in it.

'With the new ruling this year preventing us from getting together until March 1st, we would be lost without this league. We already have had a few get-togethers and we played Wicklow in a challenge, but we would be struggling to get worthwhile challenge matches otherwise.

'Playing against the Ulster counties is a great test for our lads and it lets us know just how good we are. Getting to the final last year was great.'

Coyle has expressed himself happy with the way his squad is shaping up at this early stage and he has eight of last year's provincial winning team at his disposal, including Ciaran Lenehan (Skryne), Damien Carroll (Ballinabrackey) and Harrison Silke (Na Fianna), all of whom played crucial roles in 2008.

'I have worked with these players right up from Under14 level and that is a help, though a few new lads have come through.

'The aim is to win another Leinster, but that won't be an easy task.'

Cavan completely outclassed the Dubs 18 to 11.

Bar the Dublin full-forward, who i think was called Stapleton they had very little else.

A lot of good performances on the Cavan team

Was at the Derry Donegal game on Saturday and a poor enough showing from Derry.  Is there many to come onto this team?

Donegal looked impressive,  Big strong team who have some very decent forwards.

Last gasp McGonagle score earns draw for Donegal

Ulster Miinor League - Tyrone 1-08 Donegal 1-08

A point from Peter McGonagle a minute into injury time ensured that Donegal grabbed a share of the spoils at Healy Park Omagh against Tyrone to maintain their unbeaten run in the Ulster minor league.

Midfielder McGonagle got on the end of a "45" from Dermot Molloy to flick over the equaliser and it was no more than the visitors deserved after a battling performance against the hosts.

Peter Devine and Cathal Ellis played well in defence, Darren McGeever and Peter McGonagle held their own in midfield while centre half forward Dermot Molloy was the best attacker on show ending the contest with a superb 1-4 to his name.

This draw has come on the back of wins against Derry and Fermanagh and victory in their final outing with Antrim could well see this group come down to score difference providing Tyrone win their last two games as well.

Molloy and Jamie Doherty had early wides for Donegal and it was Tyrone who settled the quicker with Brian McGarvey and Dermot Thornton among their points as they raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead.

The visitors opened their account after eighteen minutes when a ball in from the left wing from Luke Keeney was palmed over the bar by Molloy.
Moments later Molloy collected a pass from Christopher Barrett to drill over a brilliant point as the visitors began to grow in confidence.

In the 27th minute they were back on level terms with a well worked goal from Molloy and as the half drew to a close substitute Raymond McLaughlin also found the range to enable them to lead 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval.

Inside the opening minute of the second half Barrett stretched Donegal's advantage but a mistake at the back seen them undone and Tyrone substitute Darragh Donnelly fired to the net to level the game.

Twice Donegal regained the lead through points from Owen Ward and the accurate Molloy but on both occasions Tyrone equalised before substitute Caolan Daly put the home side in front with only three minutes left to play.

It looked like being the winning score until McGonagle popped up with the equaliser and the same player had a chance to win it right at the end but he shot wide off the target.

Donegal: Peter Boyle, Ciaran Connaghan, Peter Devine, Sean O'Kennedy, Thomas McKinley, Cathal Ellis, Ciaran Greaney, Darren McGeever, Peter McGonagle (0-1), Luke Keeney, Dermot Molloy (1-4), Christopher Barrett (0-1), Owen Ward (0-1), Michael McEniff, Jamie Doherty.
Subs: Raymond McLaughlin (0-1) for Doherty, Pauric Carr for Greaney, Declan McGuire for Connaghan.

Tyrone: Niall Morgan, Thomas Canavan, Ronan McNamee, Peter Muldoon, Shea McGuigan, Danny Gorman, Tiarnan McCann, Sean Warnock, Mark Faloon, Richard Donnelly (0-1), Keifer Morgan (0-1), Brian McGarvey (0-2), Aaron McCarney (0-1), Michael Donaghy, Dermot Thornton (0-1).
Subs: Darragh Donnelly (1-0) for McCann, Peter Mallon for Keifer Morgan, John McCullagh (0-1) for McCarney, Caolan Daly (0-1) for Darragh Donnelly.

Referee: Sean McGuigan (Derry)

Royals are feeling down after defeat
ULSTER MFL
DOWN.......................2-10 MEATH......................1-10

FOLLOWING the drubbing received from Armagh in their previous outing, Meath manager Pat Coyle again rung the changes for this round three Ulster MFL tie at Park Esler in Newry last Saturday – with limited success.

His hand was forced somewhat, with Ashbourne CC players again having to sit this one out, as well as a handful of others who were involved with their clubs in championship finals over the weekend.

And with this Saturday's match against Monaghan the last competitive outing before the start of the Leinster campaign against Offaly on April 18th, there is still much work to be done in the search for a winning formula.

Meath showed some good form in the opening and third quarters, but if they reproduce the fare of the second and final sectors, then their defence of the Leinster title may be short-lived.

With the advantage of the stiff breeze in the opening half, Meath made a great start, galloping into a twopoint lead following scores from a Damien Carroll free and Liam Tolan from play. Then Carroll found the net on five minutes to give his side the near-perfect start. The home side responded with three points in as many minutes, and by the end of the quarter Meath led 1-3 to 0-4.

The visitors were forced to work hard for their scores against what was a typically strong and dogged Down outfit. However, further points from Sean Tobin and Conor Devereux strengthened their grip, until disaster struck in a threeminute spell before half-time.

First, Meath keeper Anthony Dowling failed to deal with a harmless centre on 27 minutes, slapping the ball out to full forward David McKibben who netted from close range.

The keeper was retrieving the ball from his net again two minutes later after a slip by centre back Cormac Keegan allowed Michael Ireland find the net.

Instead of retiring at the break with a comfortable lead, Meath suddenly found themselves 1-6 to 2-4 in arrears. To their credit, though, they took the game to their opponents on the restart, despite conceding the opening score of the second half.

Sean Tobin was unfortunate to see a bullet of a shot hit a post with the keeper beaten on 34 minutes, and Meath then had two successive wides before the impressive Devereux reduced the margin back to one.

Their dominance in that period stemmed from midfielders Padraig McKeever and Tobin, while Damien Carroll and Devereux also contributed immensely.

The Skryne duo of Brian Dardis and Liam Tolan added further points, and Tobin converted a free as Meath went 1-10 to 2-5 clear at the three quarter-way stage.

However, once Down upped the tempo in the final quarter there was only one team in it. As well as notching five unanswered points, the home side also shot six wides and midfielder Cadlon Mooney had a goal disallowed for taking too many steps.

The margin at the end would have been greater, but for the outstanding Ciaran Lenehan who got through some trojan work in the Meath defence.

Donegal minors set for League final after win

Ulster Minor Football League Section B

Donegal 2-17 Antrim 0-7

It was an Easter Saturday stroll in O'Donnell Park for Donegal as they easily saw off the challenge of Antrim in the Ulster Minor Football League.

In what was a dress rehearsal for their June 14 championship meeting, it was all too easy for the Donegal boys who brought the curtain down on their campaign with a third win.

They must now await the outcome of next Saturday's meeting of Tyrone and Antrim, to see if they have made it through to the league final.
However, with a much superior scoring average to Tyrone, it looks odds on that Donegal will be involved in the final. Donegal have a +39 scoring difference while Tyrone have +7.

Donegal enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and had opened up a five point lead 1-5 to 0-3 by the end of the first quarter.
Tomas McKinley opened with a fisted point inside 50 seconds, which was quickly followed by a superb goal three minutes later from Owen Ward.

The Gaoth Dobhair made no mistake when presented with the opportunity after good approach play from Jamie Doherty and Michael McEniff.
While Kevin Flyod and Fergal Johnston kept the visitors in touch Christopher Barrett, McEniff and Raymond McLaughlin knocked over to main the locals advantage.

Antrim through frees from John Carron and Flyod twice reduced the margin to three points before McEniff (2), Ward, McKinley, and Molloy sent the home team in seven points up, 1-10 to 0-6, at the break.

Any notion that Antrim were going to make a game of it in the second half were well and truly ended when Christopher Barrett struck for Donegal's second goal within three minutes of the restart.

Barrett drilled past Damian O'Hagan in the Antrim goals after being sent clear by Dermot Molloy who in turn had been found by Michael McEniff with an defence splitting diagonal pass.

Leading 2-11 to 0-6, it was game over as Donegal took complete control. And even with them dropping the pace notably they still added seven more points to their tally as the Antrim challenge totally folded.

Such was the home team's supremacy that the Saffrons only scored one point in the second period from the boot of Kevin Flyod with just six minutes remaining.

Raymond McLaughlin, McEniff, Molloy, Luke Keaney and Barrett all got on the Donegal scoresheet in the second half as Martin Regan gave a number of his panel a run out.

Donegal scorers: Owen Ward (1-1f), Tomas McKinley (0-2); Dermot Molloy (0-3,1f); Christopher Barrett (1-3); Michael McEniff (0-4,1f); Raymond McLaughlin (0-2); Jamie Doherty (0-1); Luke Keaney (0-1)

Minors turn on style in second half
by Anglo Celt Reporter

Cavan 1-14 Down 1-7

A superb second half performance, during which they outscored their opponents by 1-10 to 0-2, saw Cavan run out very impressive winners over Down in this Ulster Minor League clash last Saturday morning.

The hosts were 0-2 to 0-0 up within four minutes following points from Barry Reilly - a free after a foul on the excellent Raymond Lynch - and Kevin Tierney, but sloppy handling and lacklustre defending saw them slip 1-4 to 0-2 in arrears by the 21st minute.

Another Reilly free and a Peter Morris point stemmed the tide but Down still looked in control and led at the break by 1-5 to 0-4.

Whatever manager Mickey Graham said to his side at half-time worked as Cavan re-emerged looking like a new team.

A blistering move saw Tierney rattle the crossbar seconds in but Cavan made light of their near-miss and fired over three quick points through Packie Leddy (two frees) and a brilliant individual score from Conor Tierney.

With Reilly fielding well at midfield, Brady exerting his influence at full-back and Lynch on fire in attack, Cavan siezed control of the match.

Super scores from sub Enda O'Reilly and Kevin Tierney and another Leddy effort, this time from play, saw Cavan move four clear before sub Christy Sheils pounced for a neat goal as the hosts ran out deserving winners.

They face Monaghan this Thursday at 7.30 in Kingspan Breffni Park in the next round.

Cavan: Conor Gilsenan, Aidan Moran, Killian Brady, Thomas Rogers, Peter Morris, Conor Tierney, Michael Brady, Barry Reilly (0-5), Karl Duke, Packie Leddy (0-3), Darragh Sexton, Fergal Flanagan, Jack Brady, Kevin Tierney (0-2), Ryamond Lynch (0-1)

SUBS: Enda O'Reilly (0-1), Darren Smith, Conor Moynagh, Christy Sheils (1-0), Turloch Mooney

Down: Kieran Maguire, Christopher Magee, David McEntee, Miceal Devlin, Ryan McAleenan, Niall McParland, Patrick Quinn (1-0), Rory McCormack (0-1), Fergal McEvoy, Michael Ireland, Caolan Mooney (0-1), Matthew Bagnall (0-1), Brendan Cunningham, Patrick Boyle, David McKibben (0-4)

Donegal - Armagh final looks likely as I make it.

For Monaghan to pip Armagh they'll have to beat Cavan, while Armagh will have to lose to the bottom of the table team - Down.

Ulster Minor Football League Section A

                                                                            Cavan 0-10 Monaghan 0-10       16/4/09

Monaghan ended their Ulster MFL campaign unbeaten after a draw with Cavan at Breffni Park on Thursday evening. Monaghan trailed by two points with four minutes left but two frees by Jack McCarron, who hit seven in all, gave them a deserved share of the points. McCarron, Pauric McGuirk, Paddy McGuigan and Ryan Courtney played central roles for Monaghan, while Barry Reilly, Kevin Tierney and Killian and Jack Brady were prominent for Cavan.

Jack McCarron opened the scoring from a 20-metre free after a foul on Shane Coyle, but points by Conor Tierney and Kevin Tierney, after a short free by Seán Hanley, put Cavan ahead. McCarron levelled after a one-two with Pete Dooney, and added a well-taken point, following good work by James Kerr. Barry Reilly hit a point at the end of a strong run, and converted a free after a foul on Packie Leddy, before Leddy doubled Cavan's lead with a good point. A great score by McCarron was cancelled out by Leddy, from a free after Cathal Crowe was adjudged to have touched the ball on the ground, before Kerr hit the last point of the half to cut Cavan's lead to 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval.

Monaghan sub Aaron McCarey pointed a free after he had been fouled, but Reilly responded in kind, following a foul on Jack Brady. Well-finished points by Paddy McGuigan and McCarron, the latter after good approach play by Aodhán Óg McAnespie, sent Monaghan in front, but Enda O'Reilly linked up with Jack Brady to level. A fine point by Reilly and a point by Kevin Tierney put Cavan two clear, and it could have been more but for a save by Dean McDermott after Christy Sheils had been put through by Jack Brady. Monaghan kept going, though, as McCarron converted a free with four minutes left, and repeated the trick in the first minute of injury-time to give them their third draw in five games. The result means that Bernie Murray's side finish second in Section A, with Armagh through to the final, regardless of their result against Down on Saturday. Monaghan now have just over five weeks to prepare for their Ulster championship opener against Derry on May 24.

Monaghan: D McDermott; D Burns, P McGuirk, C Crowe; R Courtney, P Boyle, O Coyle; S McElroy, J Conlon; J Kerr (0-1), P Dooney, P McGuigan (0-1); S Coyle, P O'Hanlon, J McCarron (0-7, 3f).

Subs: A McCarey (0-1f) for Dooney (inj., 27 mins), A Óg McAnespie for McElroy (H-T), D McArdle for O'Hanlon (48), S Sheridan for Kerr, D McKenna for Conlon both (56).

Cavan: C Gilsenan; A Moran, K Brady, D Sexton; T Mooney, M Brady, C Tierney (0-1); B Reilly (0-4, 2f), P Leddy (0-2, 1f); S Hanley; K Tierney (0-2), F Flanagan; J Brady, P Rudden, S Tierney.

Subs: E O'Reilly (0-1) for Hanley, C Sheils for S Tierney (both H-T), P McEvoy for Mooney (45), D Smith for Rudden (55).

Referee: L Smyth (Down).

Very good. Though technically Monaghan could still make the final if Armagh lost by 10 points, could they not?

Tyrone beat Antrim 1-14 to 1-7 earlier today in Dungannon.  It was a much more uncomfortable win for Tyrone than the final scoreline would suggest, with the Red Hands only pulling away in the final quarter.  Conditions were perfect at O'Neill Park but the standard of play was poor enough for long periods.  Tyrone appeared to be missing quite a few regulars and struggled for the most part to shake off a rather limited Antrim challenge.

Tyrone led 0-7 to 0-4 at half-time, but Antrim were proving more than a match for the home side and a goal by the Saffrons in the early stages of the second half saw them reduce the deficit to just a point entering the final twenty minutes.  Then, after a small bit of pushing and shoving off the ball, one of the Antrim players while moving away from the melee began to roar at the top of his voice: "COME ON ANTRIM....WE HAVE THEM RATTLED NOW!"  Antrim scored just one more point after that while Tyrone hit their only purple patch of the game to record a somewhat flattering eight point win.

Corner back Shea McGarrity and midfielder Sean Warnock were among Tyrone's best players in the first half while Kiefer Morgan and Niall Gavin were the winners' trump cards in attack after the break.  In full forward Gavin, who kicked some fine scores from play and placed balls, Derrytresk could have another Francie Burke in the making. He clearly has the potential to take over from the legendary Burke as the Hill's most famous footballer.

Minors round off with a win

DERRY .................................................. 1-10

FERMANAGH ........................................ 0-15

The minor team wrapped up their league campaign on an encouraging note when they edged out home side Derry by two points on Saturday, the foundations of the win being laid down in a sparkling first half performance.

That zippy display had seen Fermanagh very much in the ascendancy and they were to shoot an impressive tally of thirteen points and with the Derry attack generally curtailed, the Erne boys had established a fairly comfortable position by the interval.

In the second half they were not to enjoy as much authority and Derry managed a sturdy revival which brought them right back into contention.

But Fermanagh were sufficiently resilient to fend off the increased Derry challenge and a couple of points in the final ten minutes got the team over the winning line.

This win, the first in the four match programme, was a continuance of the steadily improved form which the team has marshalled since their opening poor match against Donegal.

That defeat was followed by a good showing against Antrim, an even better one against Tyrone and now a deserved success over Derry.

It all injects a note of optimism for the upcoming championship game with Down in mid May. Preparation for that contest will be undertaken with renewed enthusiasm and it is intended to have at least one challenge match in the programme probably with Sligo the opposition.

Collectively this tussle with Derry saw Fermanagh produce a solid team effort though there were a number of individuals who served up especially fine efforts. Half back John Duffy had a particularly tasty duel with key Derry forward Emmet McKeever while also in a well drilled back division there were steady contributions from Paul McCaffery in the full back line and from Paddy McGovern at half back.

The midfield duo of Richard O'Callaghan and Danny Mohan fared particularly well in the opening half and in the attack which had its best spell over the opening thirty minutes, Gavin Gallagher, Ciaran McBrien and Jonathan Feely all featured.

No shortage of possession for the Fermanagh attack in the first half and they made solid use of it, a tally of thirteen points scooped up. Leading the way was corner forward Feely with a handful of scores and also on the mark were Sean Quigley, Paul Mullen, Ciaran McBrien and John Mulligan.

Derry were restricted to a scanty four point total in reply but on the changeover things began to happen for them. They gained more of the ball around the middle of the park and their attack which had Fintan Bell as a sharp operator gradually picked off scores to trim down the Fermanagh advantage.

A Derry goal ten minutes from full time brought the result into doubt, the home side now only two points adrift and the impetus was with them. But Fermanagh who had been held scoreless for over twenty minutes got a boost with a much needed point from Danny Mohan and a final point from the prolific Feely closed the deal.

TEAM:

Conor Mohan; John Mulligan; Eoin Leonard; Paul McCaffery; John Duffy; Shane McMahon; Paddy McGovern; Richard O'Callaghan; Danny Mohan; Jarlath Jackman; Sean Quigley; Paul Mullen; Jonathan Feely; Gavin Gallagher and Ciaran McBrien; Subs; Vincent O'Brien and Liam Lindsay

No pressure on my minor players - Martin Regan

Donegal v Armagh - Ulster Minor League final - Healy Park, Omagh - Saturday, April 26th, 12 midday

21st April
By Alan Foley
Donegal minor team manager Martin Regan believes his players have already achieved all they set out to do in the Ulster Minor League this term, and there is no pressure on them ahead of Saturday's final against Armagh.
Donegal have produced some excellent football to reach the provincial decider, which will be played at Omagh's Healy Park on Saturday at midday, having beaten Fermanagh, Derry and Antrim as well as drawing with Tyrone, in their four group games.

At the start of the season we said that we would give the league a good and honest effort, which we did, but the thing that I really wanted was to get the fifth game," Regan said. "Competitive encounters are a vital part of the preparations for the championship and getting the extra game will prove hugely beneficial to the lads.

"They are an extremely committed panel of players and I hope they enjoy the day on Saturday, because they deserve to be there. They have been rewarded for what they have contributed this year and Saturday against Armagh will be a huge test - they've knocked over some big scores on their way through the other group."

Armagh have certainly been in fine scoring form through their Group B campaign. They rounded off their four wins from five games with a hammering of Down, 4-11 to 0-6. Beforehand, they overcame the guest Dublin side by 0-12 to 0-7, Cavan by three points, 1-9 to 1-6, and Meath, who were also invited to join the competition by 2-15 to 1-7. The other Armagh outing was a 1-10 apiece draw with Monaghan.

Tonight, Tuesday, Regan and his panel will meet at St Eunan's College in Letterkenny and there will be a final light training session on Thursday. Michael McEniff from Bundoran, Dermott Molloy of Naomh Conaill and St Michael's Raymond McLaughlin are injury doubts, although the manager has not ruled any of the trio out for definite.

"We'll see how the lads are and hopefully there will be no more injuries after the weekend," Regan added. "It would be an awful pity for a young man to miss a provincial final through injury. There's minor club fixtures this week too, so fingers crossed everyone will come through that.

"I wouldn't ask for these games to be postponed as I feel that it would be unfair on an awful lot of players - the ones that aren't involved with the county - to have to wait an extra week to get a game. Denying people football would be wrong I feel, so I'm all for the common sense approach.
By Thursday, we should have a good idea then who'll be right for Saturday."

Donegal last won the Ulster Minor League in 2006 when Brendan Faherty's late goal against Armagh was enough for the team managed by Sean Clerkin to seal the first part of a memorable double, which was complimented with the Ulster championship win over Antrim at Croke Park.

Antrim are also the current Donegal side's championship opponents this year, when they make their way to MacCumhaill Park in Ballybofey for the Ulster quarter-final on June 14.

Improving minors show great resolve to defeat Derry

Derry 1-10; Fermanagh 0-15;

Ulster Minor League; Fermanagh rounded off their Ulster Minor League campaign on a positive note as they picked up their first win with a two point margin of victory over Derry on Saturday.

After two heavy defeats in their opening two games Fermanagh have shown progress and improvement in recent weeks, pushing Tyrone all the way last week before seeing off Derry, a win which should give them confidence ahead of the Ulster Championship meeting with Down on May 17 at Brewster Park.

The platform for the victory was a good first half performance that saw Fermanagh carve open an eight point advantage over the Oak Leaf county and although Derry rallied when they had the wind at their backs in the second half, Fermanagh managed to dig deep to hold out for the win.

Fermanagh played with the breeze in the first half with Richard O'Callaghan and Daniel Mohan controlling the midfield exchanges while the attack caused Derry a lot of problems with Belcoo's Johnny Feely in particular looking sharp in the forward line as he rattled over six points.

Garvan Gallagher clipped over two points in the first half while Ciaran McBrien, Sean Quigley, Daniel Mohan, Paul Mullan and John Mulligan also chipped in with points as Fermanagh moved into a 0-13 to 0-05 half time lead.

And that lead could even have been greater but for some missed opportunities in the first period.

It was a completely different game after half-time, however, as Derry began to eat into the Fermanagh advantage.

Daniel Mohan did knock over for Fermanagh but Derry were able to get back to within striking distance as a series of points left one between them, 0-14 to 0-10. And when Derry struck for a goal with seven minutes left it seemed that they might go on to sneak the win. However, Fermanagh battled hard over the final minutes and they managed to break up the field for Sean Quigley to score to leave two points dividing the sides at the finish.

This was a good performance by Fermanagh with John Duffy, Eoin Leonard and Patrick McGovern prominent in defence while O'Callaghan and Mohan put in a good shift at midfield.

The forward line worked very well as a unit, which will have pleased the management, and they all played well with Feely, Gallagher and McBrien in particular impressing.

"It was good to finish off the campaign on a winning note and it was a very encouraging performance," said assistant manager Peter McGinnity. "We played some great football in the first half and it was pleasing to see the boys battling hard when Derry came back at us in the second half."

Minors Chasing League glory

Ulster Minor League final - Donegal v Armagh - Healy Park, Omagh - Saturday, 2-00pm

By Alan Foley

When Brendan Faherty blasted high into the Armagh net at St Tiernach's Park in Clones three years ago, not only did the late goal win Donegal the Ulster Minor League, but it set them in good stead for the championship that followed that summer.
Sean Clerkin's silky team went on to lift the Ulster championship, before finally falling at the All-Ireland semi-final stage against a strong Kerry team. This year's minor panel, now under the guise of Martin Regan, have had a similar run thus far in the league and are continuing to implement the step by step approach.

And although the manager has been hugely complimentary when assessing the progress to date and believes the Healy Park assignment is a deserved bonus after a diligent spring, he also has made no secret of the championship's importance.

Regan has to plan without Four Masters' Luke Keaney, who has a dislocated finger, for Saturday's final against Armagh. Other main fitness worries centre around Michael McEniff from Bundoran, Dermot Molloy of Naomh Conaill.

McEniff took part in light training in Letterkenny on Tuesday night while Molloy and clubmate were to play in a Minor League game for Naomh Conaill last night. Aside that, Regan was hoping that no further problems developed in the minor league club fixtures contested this week.

"We'll see how the lads are and hopefully there will be no more injuries," Regan said. "It would be an awful pity for a young man to miss a provincial final through injury."

Donegal qualified for the final after coming through Section B relatively unscathed. They opened with an easy triumph over a poor Fermanagh side at Brewster Park, winning 5-7 to 0-4, before defeating Derry by 2-10 to 0-8 at MacCumhaill Park. Afterwards, they drew 1-8 apiece away to Tyrone in Omagh, and concluded the series with a 2-17 to 0-7 success over Antrim at O'Donnell Park.

Armagh, for their part, have won four from five games, after beating Down, Dublin, Meath and Cavan and drawn the other encounter with Monaghan, have been raking up a bucketload of scores in the process.

"They are an extremely committed panel of players and I hope they enjoy the day on Saturday, because they deserve to be there," Regan said of his playing panel. ""At the start of the season we said that we would give the league a good and honest effort, which we did.

They have been rewarded for what they have contributed this year and Saturday against Armagh will be a huge test.

"Competitive encounters are a vital part of the preparations for the championship and getting the extra game will prove hugely beneficial to the lads."

Antrim are Donegal's Ulster championship opponents, on June 14, in Ballybofey, but for Saturday, a repeat of the heroics of 2006 would provide a firm foundation for what lies ahead.

Donegal Panel: Peter McGonigle (Bundoran, captain); Ashley Mulhern (Bundoran), Cathal Ellis, (Naomh Conaill), Christopher Barrett (Milford), Ciaran Conaghan (Killybegs), Ciaran Greaney (St Eunan's), Cory Gallagher (Dungloe), Dara Grant (Burt), Darren McGeever (Cloughaneely), Declan McGuire, (Naomh Columba), Dermot Molloy (Naomh Conall), Enda Faulkner (Moville), Fiachra McGinley (St Naul's), Harry Harden (Naomh Mhuire), Jamie Doherty (Letterkenny Gaels), Jonathan Harkin (Gaoth Dobhair), Jonathan Ward (Bundoran), Kevin McFadden (Cloughaneely), Luke Keaney (Four Masters), Michael McEniff (Bundoran), Oisin McGinty (Four Masters), Owen Grant (Naomh Mhuire), Owen Ward, (Gaoth Dobhair), Pauric Carr (Kilcar), Peter Boyle (Aodh Ruadh), Peter Divine (St Eunan's), Peter McGonagle (Bundoran), Raymond McLaughlin (St Michael's), Sean O'Kennedy (Four Masters), Shane Walsh (Naomh Bríd), Stephen Doak (St Michael's, Thomas McKinley (Naomh Cholmcille).

Donegal Minors' second half-fade out in Minor League final

Ulster Minor Football League Final

Donegal 0-09 Armagh 0-13

By Peter Campbell at Healy Park, Omagh

The sight of the Armagh jersey is becoming unpleasant for Donegal as the minors followed the U-21s in failing to sparkle against the Orchard men in the Ulster Minor League final in Healy Park, Omagh.

Despite getting on terms within two minutes of the second half, they just couldn't match the Armagh hunger in that period. They did get back within a point on a number of occasions but never looked likely to kick on and win.

With a great stop from 'keeper, Peter Boyle, they were just a point adrift at the break after playing against the strong wind in the opening half.

Boyle is also a very good outfield player and maybe there is a case for the Donegal management to take a look at him as a full-forward alongside Owen Ward, especially as Ashley Mulhern is a very suitable replacement between the sticks.

Donegal got the perfect start with Peter McGonigle driving from the throw-in and setting up Owen Ward for the opening score on 19 seconds.
Armagh availed of nervousness in the Donegal defence, in particular, to hit the next four points through Eugene McVerry (2), James Donnelly and Rory Grugan (free) to lead by 0-4 to 0-1 after just seven minutes.

However, the lively opening was not continued. Armagh, despite having the strong breeze at their backs, employed a sweeper in front of their full back line, which killed the game as a spectacle.

Donegal, when they got their composure back, got back in touch with
points from Dermot Molloy and Owen Ward, but they still gave a lot of ball away, trying to carry the ball forward.

Robbie Tasker edged Armagh two clear again but a great ball from Dermot Molloy set up a move which ended with Raymond McLaughlin pointing for Donegal.

Tasker put the Orchard men two clear again four minutes from the break and Donegal had a let-off in the 28th minute when Rory Grugan found a path through the middle and his pass found Robbie Tasker with just Peter Boyle to beat. He opted to flick the ball but Boyle re-adjusted to make a wonder save and even kept his balance to win the break.

A minute into added time the hard-working Owen Ward won a free near the endline and sideline but it proved no problem to Raymond McLaughlin who swung over the free to leave just a point between the teams at the break.

Half-time Donegal 0-05 Armagh 0-06

Donegal brought in Cory Gallagher and Enda Faulkner at the break and thanks to a Dermot Molloy '45' they were on terms within two minutes.
However a mix-up between Peter McGonigle and Dermot Molloy saw Armagh go clear through Gavin McParland and Ryan Rafferty doubled the lead.

Another Donegal substitute, Jamie Doherty, set up Owen Ward for a great point from 47m and Dermot Molloy was wide from a free.
Rory Grogan and Raymond McLaughlin traded points within a minute on 47 minutes and Robbie Tasker and Dermot Molloy did the same two minutes later.

However, Donegal were not to find the target in the final eleven minutes and Rory Grogan finished off the game with three pointed frees in that period.

Donegal were disappointing in the second period and overall only Peter Boyle, Cathal Ellis, Peter McGonigle, Dermot Molloy and Owen Ward made a real impression with Ward, McGonigle and Boyle outstanding. Jamie Doherty also made a contribution when coming in.

For Armagh full-back Ronan Finnegan was a revelation in the second half when released from his defensive duties. Rory Grogan, Robbie Tasker, Eugene McVerry and Gavin McParland were also impressive.
