Title: Slumdog Millionaire
Post by: AbbeySider on January 17, 2009, 12:41:48 AM
Its a sensation.
I (downloaded and) watched it last night and again tonight.
One of the best films I have seen.

Watched it tonight. Thought it was ok to good. If we didn't know the WWTBAM signifiers it would be pretty average. If that's our film of the year it was been a mediocre year. Watchable but not deadly.

Literally just watched it and was about to post in the movie recommendations thread. Haven't seen a film as good in a very long time. Superb from start to finish great story, great acting, great everything and something a bit different for a change. If anyone hasn't seen it yet go as soon as you can.

Have to reluctantly agree with pints. Very start and stop, stereotypical image of India (played out), and too sentimental towards the end. Entertaining (like ET) but lacked quality or innovation.

Decent visuals, decent soundtrack, decent acting, happy ending = wins awards.

I dont like watching streams

Download the actual movies/games/music from www.mininova.com
use uTorrent to download the files.

The more people "seeding" the file you download the faster the download....

I pmed these detailed instructions to someone else during the week:
You'll need Bit Torrent - download from here
http://www.bittorrent.com/  - It'll download the films.

Use these sites to find the films you want to download
http://www.torrentz.com/search - searches all sites but I regularly use http://www.mininova.org/cat/4 or http://thepiratebay.org/.

When you search for the film, always download the one with the most seeders/seeds.
Example
http://www.mininova.org/search/dark+knight/seeds - You'll see the top result has over 10,000 seeds - more seeds means the quicker the download.  Check out the comments on the quality of the stuff too.

To watch you'll need a codec, which does something with the files.
I think the top on here http://www.divxmovies.com/software/ is the one I have, if you dont have it your film will have no sound.  It comes with a "media classic player" too I think and I find it better that WMP.

I'm still not sure if that codec is the right one though.

They are indeed,it took me a while to get my head around them but now I'm downloading loads of stuff
I have over 3000 songs and whole series like Extreme Engineering and loads of movies downloaded.
I use www.piratebay.org to find the torrents and then Utorrent to download it,I just finished downloading the 3 Bourne films as I have never seen any of them..

I'd have no reason to doubt him.  I was using piratebay and if I had to tell him that I would have said he was trying to wind me up but he mentioned it before I did.  Plus he would nt have a clue about computers and wouldnt know what a torrent was.

Hmmm, on the plus side for me I don't think I use torrents even half as much as some of you do!! Most of the ones on here are constantly downloading, watching then downloading again!!

I dont have a download limit.

Pints,  I've downloaded Bittorrent and the Codex thing.  My first film is being downloaded at the minute.

Can I burn it to a dvd when it has downloaded, or would I have to watch it on the laptop?

How long, on average, can you expect to wait for the download to complete?

Sorry 'bout all the questions.

I think you can burn it on to dvd but you need something else to do that.  I never do, just watch it on the laptop.
The time for the download depends on the seeders, is bitttorent not giving you an estimated time?
Did media player classic download with the codec? You might want to try the VLC player oneill recomended, it looks good.

It should speed up and be quite quick with all those seeds.  Are you sure you've enough memory on the computer?
I was bitching about the length it was taking to download without realising I'd no memory left on the laptop!

You would need something like Nero to burn the dvds, and also to convert the files so that they are viewable on your standard dvd player, think the format is vob or something, someone could correct me, I am not too sure on it?

Ive no idea but:
QuoteIn the torrent job status, I get "Error: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)" and BitTorrent Mainline halts the torrent job

This error is not an error generated by BitTorrent Mainline, but rather, an error it receives from the hard drive. The error indicates that the hard drive was unable to read or write the data because the sectors are faulty, or are about to die. Cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors are often signs of possible future disk corruption. Running chkdsk might help fix the problem, but stronger recovery tools (such as SpinRite) may be required (assuming the disk is at all repairable).

There are many packages that'll burn your download format with Nero being the best known. However, if you'd rather watch them on the big screen, buy a dvd player that plays AVIs, MPEGS etc so you've no converting to do.

I have this yoke ( http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=1319&page=2) but rarely use it as used to the small screen now, or I just memory stick it onto the Mac.

You should have a download folder - if not, make one. Unless you want to be a good samaritan and become a seed, take it off.

Another decent avi to dvd programme before burning is this - http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/avi_to_dvd_avi2dvd.cfm

Go in to options and preferences, under directories you can pick your folder for the downloads.
I just leave them in bittorrent, generally let them seed a while and then stop them.

I watched the movie and really, really enjoyed it.  Still, the sight of all the shite and garbage still hasn't persuaded me to go to anywhere in the subcontinent.  The rats running over the beam in my "bedroom" in Cambodia 13 years ago towards the picturesque lake filled with crap still wrankles the brain.

A la Tony Fearon, I knew the million-dollar question and the one about the cricketer who has scored the most first-class centuries.

Saw it last night too and think its very good but not the best I've ever seen or anything.

Very good idea for a way to present a life story but the cynic in me kept saying at different stages 'as if'.

The acting was decent, the presenter was crap though and I doubt someone could be that condescending. Latika in her adult form is an absolute stunner!

I suppose it follows the Bollywood formula of happy ending, boy gets girl and it was uplifting. I'd give it 8 out of 10.
