GAA Discussion / Re: NFL Division 1 - 2020

No, I can't let this narrative go unchallenged, that Galway were somehow superior throughout and that Deegan kept Monaghan in it.

He was bad, but Monaghan felt it too. We won a free along the sideline in the second half your your selector with the orange bib encroached on the field, got involved with Kieran Hughes (he knew the right man to target anyway, I'll give him that) and Deegan throws the ball up. Your defender (Heaney was it?) wrestles McManus to the ground as Monaghan break up the field in the second half and..... nothing. Your No. 6 lay down for a minute or two during stoppage time at the end of the game. Was the time added on?...... No.

Also, I'll see your couple of goal chances (that you got points out of by the way) and I'll raise you a missed penalty, a goal chance for Jack McCarron saved in the first half, the mark taken by Kieran Hughes on the edge of the square in the second half where he hit it on the turn and it went just wide, the chance from Christopher McGuinness at the end that was saved on the line by one of your backs......... my point being that on another day we hit two or three goals too and win the game.

It was a very even entertaining game and in my opinion Monaghan left at least one point behind us today.

Great win.
Thought Tyrone were marginally better in the first half. Their scores seemed to come a little easier and their forward play a bit classier. That side line ball score from inside the 13m line with the outside of the boot was as good a point as I've seen.
However Monaghan seriously upped their performance after the break and dominated the third quarter. The work rate was phenomenal, epitomised by Donal Meegan's tackling from a Tyrone short kick out that turned over the ball and gave Monaghan a handy free in. From there on it was a case of holding out which we did thankfully.
Would agree about the wind. Monaghan played with it in the first half but it turned about 20 minutes in and was at our backs again in the second half.
It'd be great now to kick on and make a mark at national level. But that's for another day. Just delighted with this evening's win...... even if they did break the cup during the presentation!!!

"Heat of battle" is a lovely phrase to explain away any behaviour. "Freudian slip betraying a held prejudice" is another nice phrase.

I'll delete nothing. You jump all over my comment with your righteous indignation yet choose to ignore the insinuations in the comment below without knowing the circumstances of the young lad involved.

The only negative is that failed drugs test of the Monaghan panelist last year which still doesn't sit well with me and puts a slight seed of doubt at to whether it was encouraged for prospective panelists to bulk up by whatever means necessary. We will never know though.

Where's your call for that to be deleted?

Feckit - maybe you should encourage the 45% of people to play instead of ruling them out.

Don't know where Cavan's moral high ground on this issue stems from.

Whatever about Monaghan's progressive inclusive nature I'd say if a Protestant tried to join the Cavan panel Gearoid McKiernan wouldn't be long putting him in his place.

Just shows what we all knew. Monaghan a one trick pony. Completely clueless

Can't even argue with that!

However lets not forget that the real villains here are Roscommon.

We were supposed to beat Roscommon and Down in our first two games and then those two were supposed to get bate every week so that four points would be enough to stay up. F**k Roscommon anyway!!!  >:( ;)

Was at the game.

We're too small. Simple as that. Ryan Wylie, Karl O'Connell, Ryan McAnespie, Shane Carey, Dermot Malone, Conor McCarthy; good and all as they may be there's nearly half a team and all small light men. And that was the main problem as far as I could see today. Cork were far bigger, faster and more powerful and we just couldn't compete. FFS Karl O'Connell jumped to compete for both throw ins!!! What was that about?!!! We were completely overrun today and a seven point gap flattered us.

Our tactics didn't help either. We dropped McAdam back to the full back line in the first half presumably to counteract the long ball in but it was pointless. Cork just ran at us from out the field and kicked their points from further out - their No.7 got three points in the first half I think. It also meant we were down a body out the field for Cork's kick outs and their goalie found his man almost every time which put us on the back foot all the time.

Our defence was very slack in the first half with Cork players often kicking points with no pressure.

Mayo and now Cork have kept McManus quiet by double marking him and we have no other scoring options. We have to address this. No point in having one of the best talents in the game bottled up in the full forward line. Maybe try him on the 40 to get him on the ball a bit more and give him a bit more space to operate. Was listening to the radio back up the road and the report on the game said Monaghan relied on McManus and Beggan in the second half for scores. That says it all.

Few positives. Karl O'Connell played well. The boys kept going even when it had become a lost cause which was commendable. I'm clutching at staws here.

Heading down myself.
Loser will get relegated imo so its a big game. Can't recall ever beating Cork in my lifetime (could be wrong) so now's the time to correct that.
Wonder will this thread get to Page 2......

We're light at No.10 and No.12, especially with the way Mayo's wing backs like to go forward.
I'd bring Owen Duffy to No.10 and give Conor McCarthy a start at corner forward. It'd be good to see three proper inside forwards, McCarthy, McKenna and McManus, in the full forward line but that won't happen.

Do yous Mayo boys go through this rigmarole before every game?

Yous must have it all said by now!

Sure it'll be an evening out anyway. Beats sitting in the house!

A great servant to the county who leaves behind a massive void in midfield that will not be easily filled. Our go-to man for over a decade for giving Monaghan a foothold in midfield.

For some reason a league game in Parnell Park against Dublin round '07 or '08 sticks in my mind. Owen and Benny McKenna destroyed a "Ciaran Whelan led" Dublin midfield on our way to a double-scores win (1-11 to 0-7). Owen scored a good point off his left foot that evening.

Rewarded with the two Ulster medals that his efforts deserved.

Monaghan by 4-6 points.
Better players, better team, simple as that.

I don't think Karl O'Connell played minor for Monaghan. What about Ross Munnelly, he didn't play minor for Laois?

The thing about Karl O'Connell is that he never played football at all until he was about 18. He was involved in athletics in his youth. Then at about 18, he was persuaded to tog out for Tyholland, a small club – they'd struggle for numbers. And here he is now scoring a point and getting nominated for man of the match in an Ulster Final.
