Title: Joe McMahon Retires
Post by: trueblue1234 on May 15, 2017, 03:51:11 PM

A solid player for Tyrone for the guts of 15 years.  A great reader of the game and scorer of some spectacular points. But greatest achievement in a Tyrone jersey was prob the 2008 final along side Justin keeping Walsh in tow.

Will be missed.

A quality player who was comfortable in any position from 2-12. Scored 1-1 against Dublin in 2008 AI Quarter final playing wing forward and went back to full back line to mark twin towers in final against Kerry that year. Restricting Ronan Clarke to a point in AI 2005 semi final was one of his finest games in a Tyrone jersey.

A fantastic player and his versatility robbed him of a couple of All Stars.

He epitomised Tryone, one of the weirds with beards a few years ago, a limited player who fitted well into the dire system that has all but killed Gaelic Football

A Rolls-Royce of a player who strengthened a very strong team.  Pity about the injuries but with two Celtic crosses in his back pocket he can't complain.  Well done Joseph!

I'm the same age as Joe and played alongside him on and off through out most of the underage levels. Was always a standout out player and destined for big things. Injury robbed him of a significant period of time and his versatility limited his chances of individual recognition. A great player and man off the field to boot.

With 2 All Ireland SFC, 4 Ulster SFC, 1 All-Ireland MFC, 1 Ulster MFC, 1 NFL, 2 Ulster U21FC in his collection - I wish I was as "limited" as Big Joe. An absolute legend who had the footballing ability and know how to play effectively in any line of the team from full back to full forward. Enjoy your well earned retirement Joe.

He's a tough fécker and wouldn't be a retiring type of player unless he had good reason. That injury he got v Kerry virtually retired him a few years before his time.

Big Joe was a serious player. He had so much time on the ball it was hard to believe at times. His control of the football was legendary. His ability to play in almost any position was another part of his play that some many took for granted. He had some innings and had a stellar career.

Enjoy the retirement Joe.

Not as much as 05!
I wouldn't listen to that plonker tho. McMahon was a very good player. Hope he enjoys his retirement. From another "weird with a beard"

Joe McMahon didn't play a second of competitive football for Tyrone last year. You're thinking of Justin. But well done Alan.

The "Kings of Football" never take defeat too well. I read a few of the Kerry biographies including Radio Kerry Weeshie Fogarty. Not one bit  of credit given to Cork Tyrone Meath Dublin Offaly Down Derry Donegal who all won All Ireland's in the last 30 or so  years. Blame referees or"dirty players" but will never accept that the other team was better

That game and a lot of games around this time really was total football by Tyrone! Bring back the glory days.

Seeing as Joe has retired from the county scene, from now on whenever the term "Big Joe" is used it will be referring to Joe Brolly.
Big Joe is gone, long live the new Big Joe.
