General discussion / Garda killed in Donegal
December 15, 2009, 02:44:03 PM
Shocking story, and even worse if rumours that the driver of the other car intentionally rammed the Garda car!

Witnesses sought after garda dies in crash
  Monday, 14 December 2009 22:10
The Minister for Justice and the Garda Commissioner have expressed their sadness at the death of a garda from injuries he sustained in a collision in Co Donegal yesterday.

24-year-old Garda Gary McLoughlin died in hospital early this morning following a collision at Lisfannon in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Two garda detectives saw a car drive off at high speed at a filling station near Buncrana in northeast Donegal at around 1.30am.

He pulled his patrol car onto the side of the road, beside a ditch to avoid an Opel Astra coming at him at speed.

The Astra went out of control and crashed into the driver's side, where Garda McLoughlin was sitting.

Garda McLoughlin's colleague and the driver of the other car are in a stable condition.

Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern expressed his sincere condolences to the garda's family and colleagues.

In a statement, Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said that his thoughts and prayers - and those of the entire force - were with Garda McLoughlin's family.

An investigative team from the Garda Ombudsman Commission was at the scene all day yesterday.

The Commission said it is satisfied on the basis of the available evidence that it does not need to lead the investigation, so An Garda Síochána will head the inquiry.

The Garda Ombudsman Commission is appealing for witnesses.

They are looking for anyone who was travelling on the Letterkenny to Derry road between 1am and 2am yesterday morning.

In particular they are interested in a red Opel Astra with the Northern Irish registration AHZ 5912 and a navy blue Ford Mondeo Sedan registration 07 D 8652.

Anyone with information can contact the witness appeal line on 1890-600800.

Houston elects first openly gay mayor

Gay and lesbian groups nationwide raised money for Ms Parker (centre)
Houston has become the largest US city to elect an openly gay mayor.

Annise Parker, the current city controller, won 53.6% in the run-off election, beating fellow Democrat Gene Locke, a former city attorney.

"The voters of Houston have opened the door to history," Ms Parker told supporters following her victory.

Campaigning ahead of the hotly contested vote in the Texan city, which has a population of 2.2 million people, was marked by anti-gay rhetoric.

Anti-gay activists and conservative religious groups endorsed Mr Locke and sent out leaflets to residents condemning Ms Parker's "homosexual behaviour".

This election has changed the world for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community

Annise Parker
Meanwhile, gay and lesbian political organisations nationwide countered by raising money for Ms Parker and urging people to vote.

Mr Locke condemned the anti-gay attacks, but two of his key supporters contributed money to a political action committee that urged votes not to pick Ms Parker because she was endorsed by the "gay and lesbian caucus".

"This election has changed the world for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Just as it is about transforming the lives of all Houstonians for the better, and that's what my administration will be about," Ms Parker declared after Saturday's run-off.

Ms Parker will face a $130m budget deficit when her term as mayor begins in early January.

Houston is the fourth largest US city. Several smaller cities already have openly gay mayors, including Portland, Oregon and Providence, Rhode Island.

Tony Mowbray needs to have a serious spring clean in the New Year, so I wanteed to see your choices on who should be sold or just shown the door.
Happy to see everyones opinions, not just the Celtic minded on the board.

The recession still hasn't truely hit the wee six, 2010 is the year when the civil service review hits and massive restructuring culls thousands of jobs in the norths biggest employer.

I really think that next year will see people here realise what a recession really is (like the "south" has suffered), house prices still have a fair bit to fall as well.

What do youse think?

This is getting f**king ridiculous  >:( the rest of the world is saying get to fcuk on with it and these pricks are putting more preconditions in the way - w**kers!

DUP: Police plan is deal-breaker

The DUP MP Jeffrey Donaldson has said he does not believe policing and justice will be devolved if the full time police reserve is phased out.

Northern Ireland's Chief Constable Matt Baggott said on Friday he would wind up the reserve within 16 months.

Mr Donaldson said there would not be the necessary unionist confidence for devolving justice powers if that happened.

Sinn Fein have said devolution should happen without further preconditions.

On Monday Mr Donaldson said it was "absolutely clear" that the DUP would not agree to devolution if the reserve is disbanded.

However, Sinn Fein's Alex Maskey said the disbandment of the reserve is an operational matter for the Chief Constable which should not be politicised.

Reforms

The reserve is a auxiliary group of Northern Ireland police officers who support the regular force in security-related policing work.

It was set up in 1970 in response to the growing threat from paramilitaries. At its strongest it had about 3,500 officers, but now has only about 440.

It is to be phased out by March 2011, a move which was one of the key recommendations of the Patten report which led to major reforms on policing in Northern Ireland.

The DUP had listed retaining the reserve as a confidence building measure necessary for the devolution of policing and justice.

In recent days, there have been increasingly bitter exchanges between the DUP and Sinn Fein over the devolution issue.

Sinn Fein have accused the DUP of raising unnecessary obstructions, while the DUP have replied that they will not be blackmailed.

Never ceases to amaze me, anyone else got some of his peaches from the past?

Just watching this now and the language and accent isn't far off West Donegal. These people are from the Isle of Skye and all "prods".
Just wondering should we offer them the option of coming back into the mother land.

Right following on from the Poppy thread, whilst poppies don't annoy me the whole Derry thing really pisses me off.
The people from the "other side" that I know normally call it Derry, only occasionally the "L" word, normally when trying to empathise their culture.
I was just wondering how do the posters on here call it?

General discussion / Tickets for the Ireland v Italy game
September 28, 2009, 10:43:49 AM
Folks, I have been asked by a friend to post a request here.

This fella (from North Belfast) has taken his young son to a few of Irelands recent matches, the wee lad is now a dedicated Ireland fan, he promised the wee man that he would try and get tickets for the upcoming Italy match.
Was just wondering if any of you had or knew anyone who had 2-3 tickets spare, preferably at face value.

Thanks.

Can someone let me know how to set up a petition online in support of the Derry name correction.
It would be nice to add "our" voice to the debate, seeing as the loyalists have already done this.
